Horror Expedition
"Hey, imp! Ready up, we're moving!""It's Loki, sir.""To hell it's not, you don't get a name till you earn it."Loki grunted with dissatisfaction, yanking his things off the waiting table and running towards the three ATVs parked on the tracks, like they could stop the train when it came barrelling through. The military hybrid drilling rig—using piston and hydraulic engines—at the forest's edge had suffered some damage from enemy insurgents and needed quick fixing.Loki wasn't a handyman, but he managed to convince the man in charge to let him tag along, on the condition that he spare the engineer the task of fetching his weapons himself. So he was a handyman, of a lesser kind. Each ATV had two militants assigned to it: one a driver and the other a combat escort. That alone told him what he was in for, but he had to go through with it anyway. For the majority of the world's populace, of which he was no exception, a few quid was a treasure, and the engineer had been generous enough to
Good Talk
“You serious? A shadowed beast ran away?” he asked. Elvis had been Loki’s best friend for as long as he could remember. A chubby, always hungry guy who had it just as rough, but pretended to live the life whenever he could.“It didn’t have a shadow when it scampered off.”“Huh, didn’t have? So what happened to its shadow?”“I took it,” Loki replied, keeping his face as straight as possible.“Like a collectable, alright. You sure you’re okay, ski?”“I’m okay, just take a look,” Loki said, pointing at a smudge on the wall. Or rather, one of the many smudges. It was a bit darker, but that didn’t mean it was special; it could just be part of another meal he splattered while eating. Then Loki moved, and the smudge followed suit, buzzing as it did. Elvis shuffled through four expressions in the same gasp.Shock, that his street buddy had ascended to godhood and he was still stuck sniffing grass. Envy, that it should have been him. Then scepticism, about how real that reality was. Then final
Expectations
If he was going to get back to his prospective grave, he couldn't do it on foot. Luckily, he had taken an ATV before leaving. Driving was hard, but the streets taught him things. And more importantly, he needed to know what his shadow was about, and what it could do.He had never seen a lord in action, so he didn't know what to expect from his experiments, and rightly so. Even the rumours couldn't prepare him since every shadow was different. Still, there were common points of origin for shadows, so a few things were the same nonetheless; like functional immortality and the movement of the shadow, not in the regular way, but as a different entity entirely. He had overheard the affiliates of the lords mention once before, while he was cleaning their horse stables, that the latter was the holy grail of battle prowess, but still, the former interested him more.Loki wasn't going to start with a knife in his chest, just in case he was wrong, but he could work his way up there."Hey, do yo
Train Station
He had kept the ATV behind an abandoned clinic, in the grotto farther down that he was sure no one ever visited. Even then, he had made sure to tuck it into the trees and plate it with bark and leaves. Now, as he returned under the cover of night he had left, all that he was was a patch of crumpled grass, and boot marks from footwear too expensive to be about sixty percent of the populace. As of then and there, it didn't matter who had taken it. He needed to get back to the forest, and he couldn't do it without an ATV. But more importantly, he needed to get out of there immediately.Whoever had taken the vehicle knew he'd come back to look for it, and was probably already waiting, so Loki couldn't go the way he had come.Lucky for him, another path existed through the trees, although it would send him far from his usual environs. He took his chances.Less than a minute after his departure, the grotto began to glow with a dull, flickering orange. One torch, two torches, three torches.
Promise of Hardship
The first rays of sunlight escaped the horizon, bathing the world in its promise of hardship, and to some, early morning vitamin D.Loki didn't see it. The dense canopy of trees filtered light down to bare twinkles, and the oppressive atmosphere blended it and other nasty things to create gloom thick enough to cut through.Loki should have been here sooner, but the worst of luck had aided him in taking an ATV. It jerked and smoked throughout, requiring constant cranking to keep active. And yet, it still failed to carry him the whole of the way, dying at about an hour to the forest's boundaries. And on legs, that equated to almost three hours. The journey had beaten Loki more than any beast ever could, and that just gave more fuel to the doubting voices in his head. He trudged forward nonetheless, knowing that he wasn't just doing this for ego, and was too.His steps came across as cautious, hoping to hunt and not be hunted. The forest was the definition of all things unholy, dark and
Partner From Hell
Everyone loves a good sparring partner, whether for chess games or a race, but not when the partner was from hell.'Why wouldn't it die already?!' Loki thought as he pulled harder. Its mouth was already wide enough to fit two cucumbers vertically, but it still wouldn't give out. Due to its anatomy, it couldn't attack Loki in this position, as long as he kept his hands away from its teeth.Just then, he heard another splash in the water, and something else neighed. Loki could tell from the pitch that it wasn't a horse, but some evolutionary relative that wouldn't hesitate to have them both for breakfast.Sharp screeches against the metal of the trench told of terror, and claws, which the mere sight of would be enough to send him into therapy. He could handle another beast, probably, but not as he was, so improvisation was needed. He shifted his elbow and placed it on the horse's tongue, like setting cheese in a mousetrap, grimaced from thought, and then let go.The enraged beast clampe
Convicted
"Why are you here, kid?""Who the hell are you?""Did you kill this beast?"The questioning voices sounded deep and distant. His body shook, swaying left and right as his vision blurred, and slowly, his consciousness did too.---Camping in nature was supposed to be a fun weekend activity, or something of that sort. But this was just diabolical.Loki woke up on the wet wooden floor like a fish on the butchering table. His hands were tied behind his back with strong ropes, and he could already see some body marks as a sign of improper handling.Worse, he was in more pain than he had ever been in his life, so much so that he almost felt like his body wasn't his. But where was the sense in that? The entire thing was unreasonable, maybe not to normal people, but he had already grown slightly accustomed to having numbness instead of pain.Every square inch of his flesh felt like it was being pounded by hammers, having him struggle to remain awake. He turned his head slowly, relieved when h
The Will To Survive
That was probably why the Lords were so taciturn and aloof. It hadn't been three complete days since he got his shadow, and he already had a kill count of his own.And with the emotional pain he felt for every kill, he wouldn't last a year of this. That was if he kept feeling pain for it. And worse of all, he felt like he wouldn't.Every tear he tried to shed in memory of his victims was turned into pain energy by the wasp, fueling him for more murder. And the last murder– for now– just gave them a bigger excuse than convenience to have him killed and dumped, then drink in celebration over it.Loki searched the man, but didn't find an outright weapon, only a box cutter. Considering the nature of it, gore would be required to down anyone, and he had lost enough of his appetite already to accept that. But he took it anyway. Better that than to fight barehanded. He looked up from the body, or corpse, and towards the door. Wind left it ajar, inviting him to take a peek.Outside was a gloo
Brewing Storm
Loki had his head down and didn't dare move it. His breaths came painfully slowly, not enough to fill the oxygen his body's activities created. He could hear the fast-paced steps; he could see figures whizz by, although his peripheral vision censored them with nebulosity.Loki was lying in grass, face down, hoping to wait out the search. After killing the two militants, Loki had tried to curve to the side and avoid the eventual cavalry, but the militants had been too systematic in their approach. He ran, and they didn't, but yet, he was cornered now, betting his survival on hide and seek. The grasses were high, but the recent rainfall had washed them down, making the task of spotting him much easier, but still...---Loki groggily stirred, unable to realise what was going on for a moment. He was strangely nervous and soaked in sweat despite the cool weather. Pieces of grass and dirt clung to his face, itching his skin so badly. Then it hit him.In the middle of his dilemma, where he w
Both Perspectives
Thunder rumbled...The dark clouds slowly approached, creeping over the sky with howling winds. Drops of water touched down, shifting the sand like carpet, or maybe he just chose to believe it did.Something was beneath, but that wasn't his concern right now. It was what was above.Loki crawled towards a mound, or glorified cave. It wasn't big enough for him to fit, but enough for the basis of a sand bed. He broke it apart with his hands, lay on the floor, and began to mould it around himself, adding more soil to the mix as the ground got wet and less hardened. He had seen what the rains brought to anywhere that wasn't under the jurisdiction of a lord, and what he had seen had scarred him for years. Absolutely, he refused to go through it again.Visibility dropped, painting the world in colours too dark to make out; anything farther than a foot looked drawn by a six-year-old.Before the torrents shot down, Loki successfully covered himself from head to toe in his sand bed. He struggle
