The hooded stranger did not speak again until the lights of the Valerian estate had vanished completely behind the curtain of rain. They walked a narrow path that cut through blackened fields where nothing had grown since the first Abyss invasion. The ground still carried the faint metallic scent of corrupted soil, a reminder that the wound Kael had closed ten years ago had never fully healed.Kael kept three paces behind, senses stretched wide. The Core inside him pulsed in steady rhythm now, feeding him information the way ordinary cultivators once read the flow of ambient energy. He could feel the stranger’s cultivation—deep, restrained, and deliberately masked. Not weak. Not human, either. Not entirely.“You knew the Core would finish tonight,” Kael said at last. His voice was quiet, stripped of the softness he had worn for a decade. “How?”The figure did not turn. “The Abyss does not forget its own. When the final seal broke, every remnant of the old invasion felt the shift. Some

The black line in the sky lasted less than three heartbeats, yet the Abyss Core inside Kael continued to resonate long after it vanished. The pulse was not pain. It was recognition. Something on the far side of the world had answered the Core the way a locked door answers the correct key.Veylan stood motionless on the ridge, rain still dripping from the edge of his hood. “That gate opened in the northern wastes, beyond the old Scar Line. Distance is meaningless to the Abyss. The moment it tore, every remnant fragment on this side felt it.”Kael’s gaze remained fixed on the empty sky. “How large?”“Large enough that the suppression wards the kingdoms spent ten years building will not hold if a second gate follows. The first invasion began with three gates. This is only the beginning.”They did not linger. The ridge path dropped into a narrow defile where the corrupted trees gave way to bare stone and thin mist. Veylan set a steady pace. Kael matched it without effort. The Core continu

The white mask reflected nothing. Not the mist, not the faint light of the clouds, not even the residual glow of the broken highway’s runes. It was a perfect absence of feature, and the voice that came from behind it carried the same layered dryness that had spoken through the listening glass.“Kael Valerian. Bearer of the stolen heart. The gate remembers you.”Kael did not draw the dark blade. Not yet. The Core inside him had already shifted into a higher state of readiness, its pulse matching the slow twist of the mist around the figure. Shapes formed and dissolved in that mist—elongated limbs, too many joints, suggestions of faces that never quite finished becoming human.Veylan’s voice was low and tight. “That is not a remnant. That is a Herald. They only appear when a new gate has stabilized enough to project will across the boundary.”The masked figure tilted its head, as if listening to something far away. “The Watcher speaks truth. The first gate in ten years stands open. More

The service door downstairs gave way with a soft, final click.Kael was already moving. He did not charge blindly. He descended the narrow stairs in complete silence, dark blade held low, the newly absorbed catalyst fragment still resonating inside the Core. Fresh pathways had opened—small, precise channels of control he had not possessed an hour earlier. The power no longer simply answered. It listened.Three of the ash-gray figures entered the lower room in a tight formation. The fourth remained outside, watching the lane. Their coats were the same featureless material as the Herald’s, and the mist that clung to them bent the light wrong. They carried no ordinary weapons. Instead, each held a short length of solidified black absence—the same law-breaking substance the first Herald had wielded as a spear.Edrin’s voice drifted down from the study, tight but controlled. “I told you the collection was no longer safe.”Kael ignored him. The Core mapped the three intruders in a single pu

Night settled over the ruined watchtower like a held breath.Kael moved first. He left Veylan on the ridge with clear instructions: if the camp fully mobilized, create a diversion on the southern approach and then withdraw. Kael would handle the vault alone. The first catalyst had settled enough to grant him short intervals of near-complete signature suppression. He would need every second of it.The outer watch changed at the expected hour. Two men walked the perimeter with lanterns that cast more light than they revealed. Kael slipped between the pools of illumination, the Core holding his presence to a thin, cold thread that ordinary senses could not grasp. He passed the first tent line without a sound. A sleeping retainer muttered and turned over; Kael was already past. The north face of the tower rose in broken stone and rusted scaffolding. The vault door was exactly as he had mapped it—heavy iron, three mechanical locks, and a residual ward whose signature still matched the heav
