ONE STRIKE, ONE DEATH
Garrick slowly raised one hand to his burning cheek. His fingers passed over the red mark David had left there, and his green eyes narrowed with disbelief. The entire dining hall had fallen silent, but the shock on the prisoners’ faces only made his humiliation worse.“You should have remained on the floor,” Garrick said. Emerald Essence crawled across his shoulders as he moved closer to David. “Now I’ll break both your hands, crush your face and make sure they carry you to the Sterling tribunal on a stretcher.”David placed his metal plate on the serving counter. “You pushed me twice, and I warned you twice. Walk away now, Garrick, and this ends here.”“Ends here?” Garrick’s expression twisted with rage. “A powerless dog just slapped me in front of everyone, and you think I’m going to walk away?”On the raised platform, one of the wardens reached for the alarm control. He had witnessed Garrick’s violence before and knew the dining hall could become uncontrollable once the other priso
THE WARDEN’S FEAR
The announcement threw the entire dining hall into confusion. Prisoners abandoned their meals and climbed onto benches to see Garrick’s motionless body. The younger warden ordered everyone to remain seated, but his voice disappeared beneath the frightened questions spreading across the hall.Derek checked Garrick’s neck again before pressing an ear against his chest. When he still found no sign of life, grief hardened into rage. He slowly raised his head and stared at David.“What did you do to him?” Derek demanded as he stood. His hands were stained with Garrick’s blood. “You struck his neck once, and now he has no pulse.”David studied Garrick from where he stood. “That attack was meant to disturb his Emerald Essence, not kill him. Something else must have happened.”“You expect me to believe that?” Derek shouted. Emerald light appeared around his clenched fists. “You murdered him in front of everyone!”“Your friend needs a doctor,” David replied without moving. “Attacking me will n
THE TRIAL OF A MUNDANE MAN
The wardens who had mocked David now refused to walk within his reach. Eight armed officers surrounded him as they led him toward the Sterling Tribunal Hall. Whenever his chains scraped the floor, the men behind him reached for their guns.“Keep both hands in front of you,” the youngest warden ordered, although his voice lacked confidence. His fingers remained close to the gun at his side. “If you try anything, every officer here will release his Dragon Essence and ammunition.”David pressed one cuffed hand against the bandages covering his stomach. The pain remained because he permitted it, yet his expression stayed calm. “You call me mundane, but you need eight armed men to escort me. Which part of this is supposed to frighten me?”The chief warden waited beside the enormous emerald doors of the tribunal. Sweat shone across his forehead as he inspected David’s restraints. He pulled the chains until the metal bit into David’s wrists.“Whatever trick you performed in that dining hall
ALL RISE FOR THE ASTRAL PRINCESS
Another guest called from the upper seats, “Perhaps the Myles family can keep his chains after the execution. Those chains may be the most valuable things that family owns.”The laughter became louder. David’s uncles lowered their heads, while two of his cousins stared at the floor. Nathaniel remained upright and refused to look away.Victoria applauded with a satisfied smile. Tristan laughed beside her until she turned and fixed him with a sharp gaze. The moment he noticed her watching him, his amusement disappeared.Victoria then glanced at Janet’s motionless hands. “Why are you not applauding? The Arbiter has finally reminded David where he belongs.”Janet kept her voice quiet, but she did not lower her eyes. “Because mockery is not evidence. I do not know whether David is innocent, but I will not celebrate before his guilt is proven.”“Your attachment to that man has embarrassed this family enough,” Victoria replied as her smile faded. She turned slightly so nearby guests would no
A TRIBUNAL BUILT ON LIES 1
Seraphina did not remove her eyes from David. The entire tribunal had risen to welcome her, yet the Astral Empress appeared more interested in the chained prisoner than in the patriarchs waiting to greet her. Before anyone could question her attention, Alistair Sterling left his elevated seat and hurried toward the central aisle. His age and recent illness made the steps difficult, forcing two attendants to support his arms. Magnus Ashford descended from the neighbouring section almost as quickly, with one of his guards helping him maintain his balance. The two patriarchs reached Seraphina at nearly the same time. Alistair lowered himself into a deep ceremonial bow, and every Sterling representative followed his example. “Your Celestial Majesty, House Sterling welcomes you to Asterion. Your presence brings honour to this tribunal and to every person gathered inside it.” Magnus bowed beside him until one knee nearly touched the floor. His proud voice became unusually respectful as
A TRIBUNAL BUILT ON LIES 2
The prosecutor approached the first nurse and raised a copy of her written statement. “You were present when David Myles entered Elder Reginald’s treatment chamber. Tell the tribunal what he did after taking control of the patient.”The first nurse looked directly toward the galleries. “He ordered everyone to move away from the bed. When I questioned him, he said our training was useless and that only he understood Elder Reginald’s condition.”“Did the accused follow the approved treatment instructions?” the prosecutor asked as he moved closer. His question was calm, but satisfaction showed on his face.“No, he did not,” the nurse replied without hesitation. She pointed toward David as though she had practised the movement. “He disconnected the Emerald stabilising line and changed the medicine flowing into Elder Reginald’s body.”The first nurse continued without being asked. “I warned him more than once, but he looked at me and said Elder Reginald’s life was already in his hands. The
THREE MINUTES TO DIE
Janet did not sit down. She pointed toward David and said, “You call this trial foolish, yet you refuse to give us one clear answer. If you have proof of foul play, show it instead of insulting everyone who questions you.”David held her gaze through the bars of the dock. “I gave your family the truth before they placed me in chains. They ignored it because a powerless Myles was easier to blame than someone inside their own House.”“That is enough,” Janet replied, losing control of her temper. “You cannot accuse my family of corruption because you dislike the evidence. Elder Reginald is dead, and two witnesses who were present with you when he died say you killed him.”The silver rail beneath Seraphina’s hand began to bend. Violet light gathered around her, and several guests struggled to breathe beneath the sudden pressure. Her eyes remained fixed on Janet with a coldness that alarmed Magnus.David gave Seraphina a slight shake of his head. Their eyes met, and his warning was clear.
TOO USELESS FOR MERCY
Donald allowed the laughter to continue for several moments. He stood in the central aisle with three fingers raised, enjoying the attention of the tribunal. When the noise began to settle, he lowered his hand and looked directly at David.“Three minutes may even be too generous,” Donald said. His voice carried easily through the chamber. “I will make his death quick because House Sterling has already wasted enough time on a scoundrel like him.”Another wave of laughter moved through the spectators of the trial. Several Sterling elders nodded in approval, while Donald slowly walked around the prisoner’s dock.“A man like David does not deserve a grand execution,” Donald continued. “The Sevenfold Withering is meant for dangerous enemies whose deaths must become part of Sterling history. Why should seven respected healers waste their strength keeping this useless man alive?”David watched him without speaking. Donald mistook his silence for fear, and the pleased smile on his face widene
DONALD'S FATAL REQUEST
“I have heard enough,” Janet answered. She looked toward neither Donald nor David as her escorts gathered around her. “Whatever happens next, I do not wish to watch everyone celebrate it.”Janet’s father also started to rise, but he stopped when Donald approached Alistair. Victoria watched their daughter leave through the side doors before settling back into her chair.“Her guards are with her, and she needs time to calm down,” Victoria murmured. Her attention returned to the center of the chamber. “We should remain until the tribunal reaches its decision.”Janet’s father nodded. He was concerned about his daughter, but the political opportunity before him was too important to ignore. He moved toward Alistair and leaned close.“Father, you should permit the duel,” he whispered. “Donald has given us a better way to end this disgrace.”Alistair looked at him with a troubled expression. The Emerald Mace remained in his hands, resting above the Judgment Stone.“Donald is Magnus Ashford’s
A HERO AND A DEAD DOG
By noon the following day, the Sterling Grand Arena was ready for an execution disguised as a duel. Workers had reinforced the fighting ground with heat-resistant stone and metal. Emerald seals covered the walls, while Sterling healers waited beside the barriers in case Donald’s fire reached the spectators. Two names appeared on the screens above the arena. DONALD ASHFORD burned in crimson letters, while DAVID MYLES appeared beneath it in dull grey. Under David’s name were the words: CONDEMNED MURDERER OF ELDER REGINALD STERLING.Thousands of spectators crowded the seats. One man pointed toward David’s name and told his companion, “This will not last three minutes. Donald will burn that Mundane man before the first minute ends.”His companion laughed and raised a cup. “David Myles is not an opponent. He is only something for Donald to practise on before the real fighters arrive.”The dignitary section stood behind a powerful Emerald barrier. Alistair Sterling sat beneath the crest of
