BURNED ALIVE?
“No, Young Master Ashford,” the captain answered as he unlocked the chains. “The restraints remained because he was still a condemned prisoner. From this moment, his life is under your authority.”Donald removed the sword from his waist and threw it across the ground. Its point struck the stone close to David’s feet and remained standing.“Take it,” Donald ordered as he spread his arms. “I do not want the Myles family claiming that I killed an unarmed dog. Consider this my final act of generosity.”David pulled the sword from the ground and examined its edge. “You should have kept it. You may need every weapon you can find.”Donald laughed and pointed at the way David held the blade. “Do you even know how to use that? A hospital knife is very different from an Ashford sword.”“I know enough to recognise a gift you will soon regret giving me,” David answered. He lowered the weapon beside his leg and held Donald’s gaze. The crowd responded with mocking laughter. One spectator shouted, “
AFTER THE INFERNO
The explosion shook the Sterling Grand Arena from its foundations. Burning pieces of stone flew through the air and struck the Emerald barriers protecting the spectators. Thick dust rose from the fighting ground and spread so quickly that both sides of the arena disappeared. The force travelled backwards and covered Donald as well. His figure vanished inside the rolling cloud, although the crimson light surrounding him still appeared through the dust. Several healers lost their balance as they struggled to keep the barriers active.“Hold the northern seal!” one of them shouted while pressing both hands against the glowing wall. His uniform was already soaked with sweat. “If it breaks, that heat will enter the lower seats.”Another healer forced more Emerald Energy into the barrier. “What kind of attack did that young man release? This arena was designed to withstand battles between Dragon wielders.”The spectators who had turned away slowly looked back. They could not see David, Donal
WHERE IS DAVID MYLES?
“Remain where you are,” Seraphina interrupted quietly. Her attention did not leave the arena. “He has not asked for our help.”The Astral guard hesitated. “Your Majesty, that blast erased everything in its path. What could possibly remain?” Seraphina narrowed her eyes as dust rolled across the arena. “Donald released great power, but power means nothing if it strikes an empty place.”Inside the dust and smoke, Donald slowly lowered his arms. His breathing was heavy after releasing so much power, but the cheers reaching him from the spectators filled him with satisfaction. He could no longer sense movement from David’s direction. The ground before him had become a burning crater, and nothing human appeared capable of remaining inside it.Donald straightened and began laughing. “That was your great confidence, David Myles? You could not even survive my first real attack.”The arena speakers carried his voice through the dust. The spectators answered with louder cheers, and Donald raise
TWO FINGERS, ONE FALL
More spectators followed the direction of his hand.“That is impossible,” a woman whispered as her cup slipped from her fingers. “David was inside the explosion.”The silence spread slowly across the arena. One section stopped cheering, then another, until Donald noticed the strange change around him.His smile weakened. He looked toward the spectators and realised they were no longer watching him. Their eyes were fixed on something behind his back.Magnus Ashford rose fully from his chair. His proud expression disappeared as he saw David standing only one step away from his son.“Donald!” Magnus shouted as he struck the railing with both hands. “Behind you!”Donald’s body became tense. Before he could turn, David’s voice reached his ear.“You celebrated too early,” David said. His quiet words entered Donald’s ears more clearly than the earlier cheers.Donald tried to throw himself forward, but David was already moving. He brought two fingers together and struck a precise point beside
A POWER THE SENSORS COULD NOT FIND
The silence inside the Sterling Grand Arena was heavier than the explosion that had shaken it moments earlier. Donald Ashford remained face-down on the broken ground, while David Myles stood over him without any visible Dragon Energy surrounding his body.In the dignitary section, Magnus Ashford stared at the arena as if his eyes had betrayed him. His son was recognised as one of the strongest young Inferno Dragon wielders in Asterion, yet two strikes from a supposedly Mundane doctor had left him unable to move.“What did David use?” Magnus demanded as he turned towards the umpire. Heat gathered around his hands and spread across the railing. “Was there a hidden weapon inside his fingers?”The umpire swallowed before answering through his earpiece. “I detected no weapon, Patriarch Ashford. The arena seals did not register any known Dragon Gift either.”Alistair Sterling looked towards the healers operating the Emerald barriers. “Check the recordings again. A powerless man cannot disap
BROKEN BY BARE HANDS
David waited until the flames were close enough to heat his face. He stepped to the side, caught Donald’s wrist and twisted the arm behind his back.A sharp crack came from Donald’s shoulder. His scream spread through the arena as the joint slipped out of position. The crack silenced nearby rows. An Ashford officer gripped the barrier, unable to accept how easily David had turned Donald’s strength against him. “David used Donald’s momentum,” he insisted. A physician frowned. “Momentum explains the fall, not that control. He knew when the joint would fail.”David drove his palm into Donald’s ribs before releasing him. Donald stumbled sideways, but David followed and struck the outside of his knee.Donald’s leg folded beneath him. He fell onto one knee, but he swung his remaining fist towards David’s stomach.David blocked the attack with his forearm. He grabbed Donald’s elbow, pulled him forward and struck the weakened shoulder again.Another painful crack sounded through the arena. Do
SAVE MY SON!
A woman in the lower section pointed towards the arena. “Donald released his strongest attack and David walked through it. Then he broke him apart without showing any Dragon Gift.”“He must have poisoned Donald during the first strike,” someone argued. “David is a doctor. Perhaps he used a hidden substance.”The physician near the barrier rejected the explanation. “Poison cannot give David that speed. It cannot explain how he avoided every attack or threw Donald into the air.”The Kingsley representative narrowed his eyes. “Then David Myles has been hiding an unknown enhancement. No other explanation makes sense.”That suggestion made several delegates look at Alistair. An illegal enhancement meant House Sterling had failed to examine David properly. “Search the records again. Examine every movement,” Alistair ordered. The chief healer bowed. “The seals detected nothing, Patriarch, but I will check.” His assistants reopened every recording from the explosion without delay.Seraphina h
AN ARMY TO SAVE THE EXECUTIONER
Donald Ashford no longer resembled the proud warrior who had entered the arena beneath roaring applause. His black armour was broken across the chest, blood covered his mouth, and his dislocated shoulder rested awkwardly against the ground. He tried to move his legs, but they barely responded. His Inferno Dragon had become completely silent, leaving him helpless before the man he had promised to kill within three minutes.David looked at Donald for several seconds before turning towards the sword lying on the broken ground. The blade had been Donald’s final act of generosity, offered when he believed David would die without ever using it.David walked towards the weapon and picked it up. The movement caused every voice in the arena to fade.“What is he doing?” a spectator whispered as David tested the weight of the blade. “Donald cannot fight anymore.”The man beside him leaned against the barrier. “The rules say one of them must die. David is about to finish the duel.”Donald heard t
THE EXECUTIONER BEGGED FOR PROTECTION
Janet kept her eyes on David. “I am describing what everyone in this arena witnessed.”Near the centre of the dignitary section, General Kael Varen watched the Sterling and Ashford fighters prepare their powers. The Supreme Commander of the Varethian Army stood beside Seraphina with one hand resting on the gun at his waist.“Your Majesty, both Houses have surrounded David,” Kael said quietly. “They are gathering enough power to kill him before he reaches the barrier.”Seraphina remained seated. Her violet eyes moved across the soldiers below without showing any concern.“Do you believe they should be permitted to threaten him?” Kael asked. “Give me the order, and my men will enter and destroy those godforsaken soldiers.”Seraphina turned her head slightly. “Are the Astral forces in position?”“They have been ready since the duel began,” Kael answered. “Our soldiers control the main entrances, the towers and the passages beneath the arena. The Sterling and Ashford forces do not know th
BIND THE WINNER!
Alistair Sterling remained silent until the questions spreading through the arena became impossible to ignore. Thousands of spectators waited for him to decide whether David’s victory had cancelled the execution, but the Sterling patriarch was not prepared to give them an answer. He finally raised his walking stick, and the Presiding Arbiter struck his staff against the platform. The sound moved through the arena and slowly brought the spectators under control.“This duel has been interrupted under circumstances that must be investigated,” Alistair announced. His voice sounded firm, although uncertainty remained in his eyes. “Until the tribunal determines the legal effect of what happened here, David Myles will remain under Sterling custody.”Victoria leaned towards him. “Does that mean his execution has been suspended?”“It means no further judgment will be delivered today,” Alistair replied. He turned towards the guards below. “Bind David and return him to the Sterling dungeon.”Ang
