Dawn broke gray and cold, mist clinging low across the terrain between the settlement and Sovereign Command's camp. Marcus stood at the northern ridge with the engineering team, watching the first movements of Kade's forces begin to stir in the distance."Charges are set," the lead engineer said quietly, a woman named Ostra who'd spent half the night rigging the collapse point with whatever explosive material the settlement's scavenged supplies could provide. "Just say the word.""Not yet," Marcus said, eyes fixed on the distant camp. "Wait until their scouts commit to the northern approach. We want this to look like bad timing, not preparation."The wait stretched agonizingly, every minute feeling longer than it should as Sovereign's forces began organizing into their advance formation. Marcus recognized the pattern immediately — a split force, roughly a third heading toward the northern gap between ridgelines, the rest moving toward the southern approach where Elena's defense had sp

The Legion strike on Sovereign's supply camp lasted through the night, chaotic and costly for both sides. By dawn, Kade's diverted forces had finally driven the raiders back into the surrounding hills, but the cost sat heavier than the tactical map suggested."Casualties?" Kade asked, reviewing the overnight reports in his forward command tent."Forty-three confirmed dead, First Sovereign. Supply losses estimated at nearly a third of our forward stockpile." The reporting officer kept his voice carefully neutral, the way officers had learned to deliver bad news to Kade without inviting his displeasure onto themselves personally. "The Legion withdrew before we could inflict comparable losses in return."Kade absorbed this without visible reaction, though something cold settled behind his composed exterior. A third of his supplies, gone to an opportunistic raid he should have anticipated better, given how thoroughly the Legion had exploited the same vulnerability at the northern cluster

The concentrated assault hit Marcus's position within minutes, Sovereign soldiers pressing with an intensity that felt different from the broad, even pressure of previous engagements. These soldiers moved with purpose, testing specifically, watching how he responded rather than simply trying to break through the barricade.Marcus understood immediately what this meant. Kade wasn't just attacking anymore. He was confirming a hypothesis."Hold the line!" Elena shouted, positioned beside him as the pressure mounted, her voice carrying the strain of a defense stretched thin by targeted concentration.Marcus fought through the first exchanges with careful restraint, but the soldiers pressing against his position seemed almost designed to force a specific kind of response — coordinated attacks from multiple angles simultaneously, the exact configuration that would require genuine Apex-tier reflexes to counter cleanly rather than the more limited abilities of a Vanguard Tactician still build

The days following the failed decapitation strike settled into a tense, watchful quiet, both sides pulling back to reassess after losses that had cost more than either commander had anticipated. Marcus used the reprieve to finally give Elena and Reyes the fuller account he'd promised weeks earlier, sitting with them in the settlement's command building as evening fell."Anchor Point Prime," he said, beginning where the story actually started. "I commanded there before the Collapse. Apex rank, System's highest classification at the time. I trained officers across half the continental defense network, including, apparently, Captain Adair specifically.""And the Collapse itself?" Reyes asked. "You said someone triggered it deliberately.""Someone with command-tier access inside my own chain of command," Marcus confirmed. "I don't know who specifically gave the order that marked me for elimination, though I have suspicions it traces back to Kade's inner circle, possibly Kade himself. What
