The sound of the gunshot was swallowed by the wet, sickening crunch of Sterling being pulled into the wall. It wasn't a clean death; the biomass didn't just consume him—it incorporated him. Vance, clutching his bleeding shoulder, let out a raw, guttural howl, his eyes fixed on the gap where Sterling had vanished. The room began to groan, a deep, tectonic vibration that vibrated through the very marrow of their bones. The server racks were tilting, the metal screeching in protest as the floor beneath them began to buckle and liquify."He's gone!" Toby shouted, his voice cracking with terror. He scrambled backward, his boots sliding on the slick, viscous film coating the deck. "Mara, we have to move! The override is jammed! It’s gone into terminal lock!"Mara didn't look at the carnage. She kept her eyes on Vance, who was struggling to pull his sidearm with his good hand. Before he could aim, the wall erupted. Tendrils of obsidian-black fiber, thick as ship cables, surged out of the ser

The junction box was a cramped, weeping tomb of riveted steel, suspended over an abyss of grinding gears and the rhythmic, peristaltic contractions of the facility’s dying guts. Mara slammed the hatch shut, the locking mechanism groaning under the sheer weight of the pressure differential outside. The air inside the box was thick, stagnant, and tasted of ozone and old copper."Check your vitals," Mara ordered, her voice hushed but sharp. She dropped to her knees, immediately moving to Kael’s side. His leg was a gruesome tapestry of shredded fatigues and necrotic, black-veined tissue. "Kael, stay with me. Look at my eyes."Kael’s head lolled back against the freezing metal wall. His skin was translucent, blue-veined, and clammy to the touch. "I told you to leave me in the shaft, Mara. You’re just… wasting oxygen. Dragging a dead weight through this nightmare isn't tactical. It’s suicide."Elena shoved her way into the small space, panting. She tossed their only remaining handgun onto t

"The ventilation purge isn't a bypass, Elena! It’s a death sentence!" Toby’s voice cracked, the tablet slipping in his sweat-slicked palms. "If I force the pressure release, the system will flush the entire chamber with concentrated caustic agents to sterilize the breach. We aren't just opening a door; we’re stepping into an industrial autoclave." Mara stepped between them, her combat knife held at the ready, though there was nothing to fight but the air itself. "How long, Toby? How long until the pressure hits the threshold needed to blow the seals?" Toby swallowed hard, his eyes darting across the flickering telemetry on his screen. "If I sync the manual override with the internal expansion, we have maybe sixty seconds before the blast. But the moment the door blows, the backpressure will flood this entire junction with gas. We won't have time to think. We’ll have to move before the air turns into liquid fire."
