The metallic screech of tearing steel echoed through the ventilation shaft, followed immediately by the rhythmic, heavy thud of pneumatic pistons. Aren jerked back as if physically struck, his eyes snapping from a hollow void to a frantic, darting brilliance."They found the vent," Aren hissed, his hands clawing at the rivets of the floor panel. "Three drones. Class four maintenance chassis. They aren't looking for prisoners, Mali. They’re here to scrub the conduit."Mali didn't waste time on questions. She snatched the industrial grade multi tool from her belt, the sharp, jagged edge of the alloy blade glowing under the flickers of the overhead emergency lights. "How far?""Twenty meters," Aren gasped, clutching his head as a fresh wave of static flooded his peripheral vision. "They’re syncing with the internal grid. If they get closer, they’ll lock the magnetic seals on the conduit. We’ll be welded inside this box.""Then we make them regret the sync," Mali snapped. She kicked the r

The overhead lights in the corridor didn’t just flicker; they died in a synchronized sequence, plunging the warehouse sub level into a suffocating, bruised purple twilight. Mali skidded to a halt, her boots scraping harshly against the industrial grate. She shifted Aren’s weight, bracing him against a support pillar that vibrated with the rhythmic, deep-bass thrum of a building having a seizure."Aren? Talk to me," she breathed, her lungs burning. "If you’re seeing ghosts, tell them to wait in line. I’m out of patience."Aren didn't respond. His head hung limp, his hair matted with a cold, metallic smelling sweat. A thin, crystalline trail of something that looked like iridescent mercury leaked from the corner of his left eye. It wasn't blood; it was data bleed, the physical byproduct of a nervous system trying to interface with a reality that was fundamentally hostile to it.Suddenly, the intercom, a device that had been silent and dead for the last hour, cracked to life. The sound w

"Don't listen to her," Mali rasped, her voice cracking under the pressure of the suffocating, ozone-heavy air. She adjusted her grip on Aren, whose body felt less like a man and more like a heavy, malfunctioning machine. "Anindya is a liar by trade and a scavenger by nature. If she wants you to plug into that terminal, it’s not to save your heart, it’s to download your skull."Aren’s head lolled against her shoulder, his eyes darting frantically beneath closed lids. "She… she’s not wrong about the feedback, Mali. I can feel the current. It’s not just a surge anymore. It’s an appetite. The building is hungry. It wants to integrate me."Mali lunged forward, ignoring the screaming protest of her own bruised ribs, and ducked into the shadowed recess of a maintenance alcove. "Then we don’t feed it. We get out. The exterior scaffolding is our only shot. If we reach the Ivory Spire’s outer shell, we can bypass the internal grid entirely. We’ll be exposed, we’ll be freezing, and we’ll be targ

"Move, Aren! Now!"Mali’s voice was a jagged blade cutting through the howling wind. She didn't wait for his legs to find their rhythm. She grabbed the collar of his coat, the fabric slick with freezing rain and chemical grime, and hauled him toward the final security gate."I can’t..." Aren choked out, his body convulsing as if a high voltage wire had been threaded through his spine. "The grid... it’s trying to handshake, Mali. It’s trying to sync with my pulse.""Ignore it!" she screamed over the thunderous roar of the storm. They were fifty feet above the industrial slums, clinging to the skeletal remains of the Ivory Spire’s exterior scaffolding. Beneath them, the city was a smear of neon and misery, but ahead, the perimeter gate loomed, a massive, reinforced steel maw that separated the Spire’s controlled death from the chaotic sprawl of the grey zone.An Archivist operative stood before the gate, a silhouette of calculated menace. He didn't carry a firearm; he carried a shock la
