"It’s not a bank anymore, Carlos. Haven't you been listening to anything Martha said at the diner?" Elena wrenched her arm out of his grip, her eyes flashing in the dim, yellow glare of a flickering sodium streetlamp hanging crookedly from the brick facade above them. She marched right up to the rusted iron security gate, grabbed the thick steel bars with both gloved hands, and rattled them with a violence that sent a metallic screech echoing down the narrow, dead-end alley. "The Oakhaven First National has been boarded up since nineteen-ninety-four. The FDIC liquidated whatever was left of the physical assets, the safe deposit boxes were auctioned off to cover local agricultural defaults, and the municipal government took over the basement archives as a spillover dump for unindexed public property records. There hasn't been a teller, a vault combination, or a single red cent inside this building in thirty years. We aren't robbing a bank. We are retrieving public documents that rightf

"Keep your voice down, Carlos. Do you want the whole neighborhood to know we’re playing amateur jewel thieves in a defunct municipal records dump?" Elena hissed over her shoulder, her breath pluming into the freezing maritime air as she gave the jammed screwdriver one final, brutal wrench.A sharp, metallic crack split the damp silence of the alley, followed by the heavy, satisfying thud of the rusted padlock hitting the concrete floor."Amateur jewel thieves don't usually smell like diesel fuel and rotting kelp," Carlos muttered, though he immediately stepped forward to shove the iron gate open, wincing as the rusted hinges shrieked a high-pitched protest. He grabbed the edge of the heavy basement window, grunting as he forced it upward. "If we’re doing this, let's make it quick. The headlights we saw earlier weren't just a stray car; that was Deputy Miller’s cruiser making its hourly sweep down the harbor road.""We have what we came for," Elena said, pulling a damp, grease-stained

"What do you mean, indefinitely postponed?" Elena demanded, her voice cutting through the hum of the small, battered refrigerator like a serrated blade. She gripped the edge of the laminate counter, her knuckles turning bone-white as she glared across the room at the portable telephone. "We have an active account. We placed the order three days ago, and your dispatcher confirmed the delivery window for this morning."The voice on the other end of the line—flat, nasal, and dripping with corporate indifference—sighed loudly enough to rattle the receiver. "Look, lady, I don't know what to tell you. My screen says orders to your sector, particularly the old Miller dock parcel, are flagged under a regional supply hold. Nothing moves out that way until further notice.""A regional supply hold?" Carlos repeated, stepping out from the narrow hallway with a wrench in his hand, his brow furrowing deeply as he caught the tail end of the exchange. "For what? There’s no storm warning, and the high

"It’s bone dry," Carlos announced, his voice raspy as he dropped the rusted metal gas can onto the splintered planks of the back porch with a hollow, frustrating clatter. He wiped a streak of dark grease across his forehead with the back of his forearm, leaving a smudged streak against his skin. "I tried the pickup's tank first. Not a single drop left. Then I went down to the generator shed and stripped the intake line, hoping there was a puddle left in the bottom of the reserve drum. Nothing. Not even enough to prime the carb for ten seconds."Elena didn't look up from the microfiche ledger spread across the kitchen table, though her shoulders tightened visibly under her heavy wool sweater. "Silas didn't just tell the local distributor to cut us off. He must have called the regional wholesaler in Crescent City too. Anyone who delivers within a thirty-mile radius has our coordinates flagged.""Flagged as what? A hazard?" Carlos muttered, stepping through the doorway and kicking the th
