CHAPTER ELEVEN: THE ROOM DECIDES
Nobody moves for three full seconds. Then the ballroom breaks apart into a hundred separate conversations at once, a roar of whispers that Lucien can feel more than hear, every family head in the room recalculating everything they thought they knew about tonight. Daniel doesn't recalculate. He just stares, jaw slack, the shirt he'd thrown on so carelessly three nights ago suddenly looking like the wrong armor entirely. "Get away from him," he says to Chloe, without looking at her, eyes still locked on Lucien. "Now." She doesn't move. Lucien doesn't look at her either. There's nothing left in that direction worth his attention. Adrian's voice cuts low and even beside him. "Don't chase the room. Let it come to you." It comes fast. Within a minute, a loose half circle has formed around Lucien, none of them quite committing to approach, all of them close enough to hear each other, and the conversation that follows happens less like introductions and more like men circling a fire dec
CHAPTER TWELVE: EYES IN THE ROOM
Cassius doesn't get three steps before a woman falls into pace beside him, dark hair, sharp green eyes, a glass of champagne she hasn't taken a single sip from."You've been standing by that pillar since before the announcement," Valentina Rossi says pleasantly. "Which means you weren't here for the party."Cassius doesn't break stride. "I don't believe we've met.""We haven't. I'm the host's daughter, which means I get to ask questions like that without it being rude." She smiles, though her eyes stay sharp. "You work for someone who wanted eyes on that stage tonight, but I'm happy to be wrong.""You'd be wrong.""Then I apologize." Her smile doesn't move. "Enjoy the rest of the evening. Do give my regards to whoever reads that message you just sent."She peels away before he can answer, moving unhurried back toward the crowd. Cassius stands very still for a moment, recalculating exactly how much of tonight has gone unnoticed, then continues toward the terrace without looking back.A
CHAPTER THIRTEEN: THE FIRST CALL
Lucien doesn't sleep. He lies in the dark counting the hours until a decent time to call a man he met for ninety seconds two night before, and gives up somewhere around six in the morning, showering and dressing before Adrian even has the chance to remind him.Sophia meets him outside the study, two cups of coffee in hand, offering him one without a word."You look terrible," she says."I feel terrible.""Good. Rossi will hear it in your voice either way. Better he thinks it's nerves than indifference." She hands him a tablet with a single number displayed, no name attached. "He picks up on the third ring exactly, every time, we've timed it before. Don't rush the greeting."Lucien dials at seven, precisely, and Rossi answers on the third ring."Mr. Moreau." Rossi's voice carries none of the warmth from the ballroom, though none of the coldness either. "I confess I didn't expect you to call this early.""I didn't want you thinking I needed sleep to work up the nerve."A short laugh, ge
CHAPTER FOURTEEN: WHAT'S LEFT OF THE NAME
The Ashbourne penthouse is silent when Nathaniel returns from the morning's business, and he finds Daniel exactly where he expects to find him, slumped in the study with a bottle already half empty though it isn't yet noon."Get up," Nathaniel says.Daniel doesn't move. "Come to humiliate me again? You already managed that in front of every family that matters.""I didn't humiliate you. You did that yourself, three days before I ever opened my mouth." Nathaniel crosses the room and takes the bottle from the table, setting it out of reach without ceremony. "I've spent the morning on the phone with four families, each asking, politely, whether the Ashbourne name can still be trusted to keep its word. Do you understand what that costs me?""I understand you'd rather protect your business than your own son.""There is no difference between the two, Daniel." Nathaniel sits across from him, his voice dropping into something quieter, more dangerous for its lack of heat. "Tell me honestly. Wh
CHAPTER FIFTEEN: SOMEONE IS LISTENING
Ronan's private security sweep begins at midnight, exactly as Sophia asked, quiet enough that even Adrian doesn't know it's happening. By one in the morning, it produces something nobody wanted to find."There's a query in the system," Leon says, voice tight, pulling Ronan and Sophia into the tech wing without ceremony. "Twenty minutes ago. Someone accessed tomorrow's transfer route from an internal terminal, using valid credentials, then wiped the access log immediately after.""Wiped how?" Sophia asks."Cleanly. Professionally. If I hadn't been running a shadow trace as part of Ronan's sweep, I never would have caught it at all." Leon turns the screen toward them. "Whoever did this knew exactly how our logging works, which means it's someone with real technical access, not a low level plant like we assumed with the warehouse lease."Ronan's jaw tightens. "Whose credentials?""That's the problem. It's not one person's login. It's a service account, shared across the communications te
CHAPTER SIXTEEN: THE CONVOY
The convoy leaves under gray skies, Lucien in the middle vehicle flanked by two SUVs of armed escort, Ronan riding beside him with a tablet tracking their position against three separate satellite feeds. The new route winds through back roads Lucien has never seen, chosen at the last possible hour, known to only four people alive. For the first forty minutes, nothing happens beyond Ronan narrating landmarks and radio checks crackling through at steady intervals. Then the lead vehicle's driver comes through sharp and fast. "Obstruction ahead. Downed tree across the road.""That road's been clear all week," Ronan says, already sitting forward. "Reroute. Now."The convoy begins to turn, and that's when the first shots hit the lead vehicle's tires."Contact, contact, we're taking fire." The radio cuts to static.Ronan shoves Lucien down below the window line with one hand, drawing his weapon with the other. "Stay down. Do not move."Through the gap between seats, Lucien watches muzzle fla
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: THE COST OF A DECISION
The mountain is quiet when the convoy finally returns, but the quiet carries weight, the particular stillness of a place absorbing bad news before it's officially spoken aloud. Adrian is waiting in the receiving bay, and Lucien can tell from his face that word of the two dead escorts has already reached him. So has something else."You changed the route without telling me," Adrian says to Lucien."That was my call," Sophia says, stepping forward before Lucien can answer. "Leon found evidence of an internal query against the original schedule at one in the morning. I made the decision to limit who knew the new route to four people. You weren't one of them.""I run security for this organization.""You also have a service account with communications access that I couldn't rule out in the time I had," Sophia says, unflinching. "I wasn't accusing you, Adrian. I was protecting the only variable I could actually control."Adrian's jaw works silently for a moment, something raw moving behind
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN: NO EXCUSES
Leon confirms it by two in the morning, eyes bloodshot, voice hoarse from hours of reviewing footage nobody thought to check before now."There's a camera blind spot on the north access road," he says, spreading three still frames across Sophia's desk. "Has been for months, a maintenance gap nobody flagged because it's outside the perimeter fence. This morning, forty minutes before the convoy left, a car sat parked at the edge of that blind spot for eleven minutes, then pulled away the moment our gate opened."Sophia studies the grainy plate number, half obscured by mud that looks deliberate rather than accidental. "Physical surveillance. Someone watched us leave and radioed ahead.""Or followed at a distance using the blind spot to stage without being seen," Leon says. "Either way, it means the ambush wasn't built entirely on inside knowledge. Someone's watching this facility directly.""Then we close the blind spot today," Ronan says, arriving mid conversation, jaw still tight from
CHAPTER NINETEEN: THE NAME
The plate from the north access road takes Leon a day to crack, routed through a rental agency using an identity that doesn't hold up past a second layer of scrutiny. What it does give him, finally, is a face clear enough to run against Pandora's own personnel files, and the result lands in Sophia's office like a dropped weight."His name is Farid Nasser," Leon says, sliding the file across the desk. "Communications officer, level three clearance, six years with this organization. He's one of the six people who could have accessed the original transfer schedule. He's also, according to this rental record, the man who sat in a car outside our own perimeter fence the morning of the ambush."Sophia stares at the photograph, an unremarkable man in his thirties, nothing in his file suggesting anything beyond competence and quiet reliability. "Six years. That's not someone planted last month.""Which means either he's been compromised recently, or he's been waiting a very long time for exac
CHAPTER TWENTY: THE GAME BEGINS
Ronan and his team reach Nasser's apartment building thirty minutes after they left the compound, moving fast through a narrow stairwell that smells of old paint and someone's dinner still cooking three floors down. The door to unit six is unlocked, which is the first thing that tells Ronan they're already too late.He clears the room with two others behind him, weapon raised, and finds Farid Nasser slumped in his desk chair, a single wound at the base of his skull, precise and silent, the kind of kill that speaks of training far beyond what a communications officer's file would suggest belonged to whoever did it."He's gone," Ronan says into his radio, voice flat. "Clean kill. Whoever did this was in and out before we were halfway across the city."Sophia hears it over the line from the compound, and something in her chest goes cold and still. "The laptop. Check the laptop."Ronan crosses to the desk. The screen is dark, and when he presses the key, nothing happens. "It's wiped. Comp
