CHAPTER ONE: THE RING IN HIS POCKET
Lucien Moreau checks his reflection in the cracked side mirror of a parked delivery van and decides it will have to do. His dark hair is still damp from a shower he took too fast, his gray eyes tired from a double shift, and his shirt is the only clean one he owns without a stain on the collar. In his jacket pocket sits a small velvet box, and every few seconds his fingers drift toward it to make sure it is still there.Twenty four years old, and tonight he finally has something to give the woman he loves besides promises. The ring cost him three months of overtime at the warehouse and two weekends hauling furniture for a moving company on the side. It is not gold. It is not set with anything rare. But it is his, earned with his own hands, and he has rehearsed the words he wants to say to Chloe Bennett so many times that they no longer feel like words at all. They feel like a debt he is finally ready to pay.He climbs the stairs to her apartment two at a time, humming under his breath
CHAPTER TWO: THE MEN IN BLACK
The apartment smells like the lavender oil his mother used to help her sleep, and Lucien sits beside her bed for a long time before he can make himself call anyone. The aide has already contacted emergency services. There is nothing left to save, only paperwork to sign and a body to release to a funeral home he cannot really afford. He holds his mother's hand until it grows cold, and he does not let himself think about Chloe, or Daniel, or the ring still crushed in his fist. There will be time to grieve everything else later. Right now there is only this. The three days between his mother's death and the funeral pass in a blur of paperwork and phone calls Lucien does not remember making. He sells the small television to cover part of the funeral home's deposit. He picks up an extra shift at the warehouse two days after burying his own grief in a filing cabinet, because rent does not pause for mourning and neither does the balance still owed on his mother's final round of medication. H
CHAPTER THREE: PANDORA
Lucien does not remember agreeing to get into the car. One moment he is standing over his mother's fresh grave, and the next he is seated in the back of a Rolls Royce that glides through the city so smoothly he can barely feel the road beneath the tires. Adrian sits across from him, patient and silent, allowing Lucien the space to absorb what he has just been told."If any of this is real," Lucien finally says, "prove it."Adrian reaches into his coat and produces a slim leather folder, offering it without a word. Inside is a photograph, worn soft at the edges, of a man with dark hair and the same piercing gray eyes Lucien sees every morning in the mirror. Beside the photograph is a birth record with a name Lucien has never seen written down before, an official document sealed decades ago and marked with a level of government clearance that makes his hands go cold just looking at it."Dante Moreau," Adrian says quietly. "Your father. He looked at you exactly once, the night you were b
CHAPTER FOUR: A NAME ON EVERY SCREEN
The chamber falls silent except for the low hum of servers somewhere behind the walls. Lucien watches the encrypted text scroll across the screen, unable to read a single character of it, yet perfectly capable of reading the tension gathering in every face around the table."Leon," Sophia says, her voice suddenly sharp. "Translate."Leon's fingers are already moving across a holographic interface that rises from the table's surface like something out of a film Lucien never had money to see in theaters. "Give me a second. It's routed through four relays before it even hits our servers, which means whoever sent it doesn't want to be traced, but also wants us to know they could have hidden it better if they'd tried.""Meaning what?" Ronan asks."Meaning it's a message, not surveillance." Leon's grin fades as the translation resolves on screen. He reads it aloud, his voice losing its usual humor. "The heir has been found. The throne remains contested. Confirm nothing. Deny nothing. Watch
CHAPTER FIVE: THE FIRST LESSON
Ronan Voss does not believe in easing anyone into anything, and he makes that clear within the first ten minutes of Lucien's first training session. The private gymnasium beneath the estate is vast, equipped with mats, weapons racks, and a reinforced ring that looks like it has absorbed more blood than Lucien wants to think about."Your ribs are still healing," Ronan says, circling him slowly. "Which means today isn't about hitting hard. It's about learning to move so you don't get hit at all.""I got hit plenty three days ago," Lucien mutters, rolling his shoulder where the bruises have only just begun to fade to yellow."I'm aware." Ronan's voice carries no sympathy, only fact. "Two men held you while a third worked you over, and you never once tried to protect your ribs. You covered your face instead. Understandable instinct. Wrong one."Lucien plants his feet the way Ronan showed him a moment earlier. "So teach me the right one."For the next hour, Ronan does exactly that, correct
CHAPTER SIX: THE ARCHITECTURE OF POWER
Sophia Laurent's office occupies the highest level of the underground compound, a glass walled room overlooking a private garden built entirely underground and lit to mimic natural sunlight. Lucien finds the effect unsettling the first time he steps inside, as though even the sky here has been manufactured for someone else's convenience."Sit," Sophia says, not looking up from the array of screens surrounding her desk. "We have less than three weeks and an enormous amount of ground to cover."Lucien sits. "Where do we start?""With the truth about what you actually own." Sophia finally turns to face him, sliding a tablet across the desk. "Your father's estate is not a single fortune. It is layered across seventeen countries, disguised inside hundreds of legitimate corporations, shell companies, real estate holdings, and financial instruments so complex that most of my own analysts only understand fragments of the whole structure."Lucien scrolls through numbers that mean almost nothin
CHAPTER SEVEN: THE MAN WHO WATCHES FROM SHADOWS
Far from the underground compound where Lucien trains until his body aches, in a penthouse suite overlooking Lake Como, Vittorio De Luca stands at a floor to ceiling window with a glass of wine he has not touched in twenty minutes. Behind him, a tablet rests on a marble table, displaying a still image captured from a cemetery security camera three days earlier. A young man with dark hair and gray eyes, standing alone at a fresh grave."He looks nothing like Dante," says the man seated across the room, a lean, sharp featured operative named Cassius who has served Vittorio's private interests for nearly a decade. "Ordinary clothes. Ordinary posture. If I saw him on the street, I would think nothing of him.""That is precisely the point," Vittorio says, without turning around. His voice carries the calm, unhurried cadence of a man who has never needed to raise it to be obeyed. "Dante did not hide his son in a palace surrounded by guards. He hid him in plain sight, disguised as nothing at
CHAPTER EIGHT: COUNTING DOWN
The days blur together in the underground compound, each one longer and more grueling than the last, and Lucien begins to understand that the three weeks Adrian promised him are not nearly enough time for everything he needs to learn. Mornings belong to Ronan, who pushes him through combat drills until his muscles shake, correcting every misstep with blunt precision that Lucien has slowly come to respect rather than resent. Afternoons belong to Adrian, who drills him relentlessly on the histories, alliances, and rivalries of the Eight Families until names and faces that once meant nothing now feel as familiar as old neighbors."Again," Adrian says, tapping the table between them where a hand drawn diagram maps the tangled web of marriages, betrayals, and business arrangements connecting the Rossi, Dragunov, Takamura, Mendoza, Al Rashid, Adeyemi, Delacroix, and Ashbourne families across three generations. "Who currently holds the strongest grievance against the Dragunov Syndicate?""Th
CHAPTER NINE: WHEELS UP
The private jet cuts through clouds high above the Atlantic, and Lucien sits by the window watching the world blur beneath him, unable to shake the feeling that he is leaving behind the last fragments of his old life for good. Across the cabin, Ronan reviews security logistics with two junior operatives in low, clipped tones, while Adrian reads through a briefing on the Rossi family's current internal politics, occasionally murmuring corrections to details Lucien has already memorized.Sophia sits beside Lucien, uncharacteristically quiet, scrolling through financial reports on a tablet without truly reading them."You've checked that same file four times," Lucien observes."Force of habit," Sophia admits, setting the tablet down. "It's easier than thinking about everything that could go wrong tomorrow night.""I didn't think you were the type to worry.""I'm the type who plans for every possible failure so thoroughly that worry becomes unnecessary," Sophia says. "Tonight, apparently,
CHAPTER TEN: THE BALL
CHAPTER TEN: THE BALLThe Rossi family's ballroom in Rome is bigger than anything Lucien has ever stood inside. Marble floors. Gold ceilings. Hundreds of guests in suits and gowns, all talking in low, careful voices. Lucien stands near a side entrance with Adrian, Sophia, and Ronan close behind him, his father's ring heavy on his finger."Stay close to me until I give the signal," Adrian says quietly. "Not one second before.""What signal?" Lucien asks."You'll know," Adrian says."That's not helpful," Lucien mutters."It's not meant to be helpful," Adrian says. "It's meant to be safe."Sophia leans in close. "Remember what we practiced. Watch the room before you speak. Every person here is doing the same thing to you.""I remember," Lucien says.Ronan says nothing, but positions himself half a step behind Lucien's shoulder, eyes already scanning the crowd for threats out of pure habit.Lucien scans the room, trying to match faces to the names he memorized over the past three weeks.
