CHAPTER FORTY-ONE: THE FIRST CRACK
Richard arrived at Grant's office before sunrise. He had barely slept. The city outside the glass windows was still gray, with only a few headlights moving along the road below. On the desk in front of him were three folders, two printed bank statements, a tablet displaying Black Group's falling share price, and the photograph Grant had taken from the Westbridge archive. Richard picked up the photograph. Jonathan Vale stood at the edge of the old boardroom picture. The silver-haired man looked calm. Too calm. Richard had studied the photograph so many times that he could recognize every face without looking at the notes. Alexander Black. David Steele. Kane's grandfather. Jonathan Vale. And the others whose names had been buried beneath years of corporate restructuring. He placed the photograph down. "Still looking at that?" Richard turned. Grant walked in carrying two cups of coffee. "You're early." "So are you." Grant placed one cup in front of him. Richard didn't touch it.
CHAPTER FORTY-TWO: THE NAME THEY BURIED
Sophia drove. Richard sat in the passenger seat, staring through the window. Neither of them spoke for the first ten minutes. The city moved around them. Traffic. Horns. People crossing roads. Buildings rising above the streets. Everything looked normal. Richard had learned that normal could be a dangerous illusion."So," Sophia said eventually, "are you going to ask?""Ask what?""Why I told you not to speak to Marcus first."Richard looked at her. "You clearly know something.""I know how shell companies work.""That isn't what I asked."Sophia glanced at him. "You're learning.""About what?""Not answering the question you were asked."Richard almost smiled. "You're difficult.""I've been told.""Frequently?""By men who thought money made them interesting."Richard looked back out the window. "I don't think money makes me interesting.""I know."The answer came so quickly that he looked at her again. Sophia kept her eyes on the road."You don't act like someone who's comfortable w
CHAPTER FORTY-THREE: NO MORE LIES
Marcus sat alone in his hospital room. The television was on, but he wasn't watching it. His phone lay on the table. Richard's last question kept replaying in his mind. Can't or won't?Marcus closed his eyes. For twenty-two years, he had convinced himself that silence was protection. Protecting his father. Protecting the Steele family. Protecting Richard. But now Richard was standing in the middle of the same war Alexander had disappeared into. And Marcus was beginning to understand something he had refused to admit.Silence had never protected Richard. It had only protected the people who knew the truth. The door opened. Cara entered. She carried a paper bag."You haven't eaten."Marcus didn't answer. She placed the food on the table. "Marcus.""I spoke to Richard."Cara stopped. "What happened?""He asked about Northstar."Her face changed. "You told him?""I told him Alexander used it."Cara sat down. "How much?""Not enough.""Why?"Marcus looked at her. "Because I don't know how
CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR: THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
The Black Group boardroom had never looked so hostile. Nine voting members sat around the long table. Richard stood at the entrance. Sophia remained behind him. Grant walked in last. Nobody welcomed them. The chairman looked at Richard. "You were not invited." Richard pulled out a chair. "I noticed." He sat. The chairman frowned. "This meeting concerns unauthorized access to confidential company records." Richard placed the Northstar file on the table. "Then let's talk about it." Several directors exchanged looks. The chairman leaned forward. "You accessed restricted records using credentials that were not assigned to you." "I didn't." "We have evidence." "Show me." A director slid a document across the table. Richard read it. His credentials. His name. His authorization. The access time matched the moment Sophia and Richard had been trapped in the abandoned Northstar office. Richard looked up. "This is fake." The chairman smiled. "You expect us to believe that?" "No." Ri
CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE: THE SECOND DOOR
The old Steele Foundation building looked abandoned. The upper floors had been stripped years ago. Windows were broken. The sign had fallen from the front wall. Weeds had pushed through cracks in the pavement. But Marcus didn't stop at the entrance. He walked around the side. Richard followed. Sophia stayed close. Lucas and Grant came behind them."Where are we going?" Richard asked."Basement.""There is no basement."Marcus stopped. "There is."He moved a section of loose concrete beside the wall. A metal hatch appeared underneath.Richard stared. "How long has that been there?""Twenty-two years."Marcus opened it. Cold air rose from below.Sophia looked into the darkness. "This is comforting."Richard glanced at her. "You scared?""No.""You hesitated.""I was deciding whether you're worth saving."Richard smiled. "And?""Still undecided."They descended. The staircase was narrow. The deeper they went, the colder it became. At the bottom was a steel door. Marcus removed an old key
CHAPTER FORTY-SIX: THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN
Richard woke to the sound of someone breathing. For one terrifying second, he couldn't move. His back was against the cold concrete floor of the underground archive. His ears rang. His vision came in fragments, the steel shelves, the scattered folders, the overturned chair. Then he remembered the gunshots.Edward.Richard pushed himself upright. "Edward?"Nothing. The old man was gone. The black envelope was gone too.Richard looked toward the doorway. Marcus was already standing there with his gun raised, scanning the darkness."Nobody move," he said.Sophia ignored him. She was crouched beside Edward's last position, running her fingers over the floor. "There's blood."Richard stepped closer. A thin trail disappeared beneath the steel shelving."He's hurt," Richard said.Sophia shook her head. "Not enough blood for a fatal wound."Marcus lowered his weapon slightly. "Then where the hell did he go?"Richard looked at the wall. Something was wrong. The steel shelving on the eastern si
CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN: THE SHOT IN THE DARK
Sophia screamed. Richard heard her hit the floor."Sophia!"He dropped beside her, his hands searching through the darkness. Another gunshot cracked through the room. Richard ducked. Marcus fired toward the sound. The muzzle flash briefly illuminated the command center. Nothing. No shooter. Only monitors flickering in the darkness."Get down!" Marcus shouted.Lucas dropped behind the table.Richard found Sophia's arm. "Where are you hit?""My shoulder." Her voice was tight. "Richard, don't move me."He felt the fabric of her jacket. Wet. Blood. But not enough. He tore open the sleeve. The bullet had grazed the outside of her shoulder.Richard exhaled. "You're lucky."Sophia gave him a sharp look. "Don't say that.""Why?""Because I don't feel lucky."Another shot struck the wall. Concrete exploded above Richard's head."Down!"Marcus fired again. The room filled with smoke. Then silence.Richard looked toward the monitors. All four were black. "He's gone."Marcus shook his head. "No."
CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT: THE MAN WHO CAME BACK
Richard moved before Victor could pull the trigger. He slammed into Marcus. The gun fired. The bullet struck the ceiling.Sophia ducked behind the table. Lucas grabbed Victor from behind. Victor drove his elbow into Lucas's ribs and broke free. Marcus fired. Victor disappeared behind the doorway."Don't shoot!" Richard shouted.Marcus ignored him. He fired twice. Then silence.Richard looked at him. "Why did he point the gun at you?"Marcus stared at the doorway. "I don't know."Richard shook his head. "Not good enough."Sophia emerged from behind the table. Blood had soaked through her sleeve again.Richard noticed. "You need a hospital.""I'm not leaving.""You've been shot.""And Victor just tried to shoot Marcus." She looked toward the tunnel. "We deal with that first."Lucas rubbed his ribs. "Can we agree that everyone in this family has terrible communication skills?"Nobody laughed. They followed Victor. The tunnel was empty. But there were fresh footprints. Two sets.Sophia cr
CHAPTER FORTY-NINE: THE LAST LIE
Richard didn't move. "What did you say?"Victor stood in the doorway, breathing heavily. "Your father."Richard walked toward him. "Don't play games with me.""I'm not.""Then explain."Victor placed the bloodied folder on the table. "I found this in the car."Richard looked down. The cover carried a name.*EVELYN BLACK.*His mother's name again. But this time, beneath it was another word.*CONFIDENTIAL.*Sophia stepped closer. "Where did you get it?"Victor looked at her. "From the man who tried to kill me.""Who?"Victor's expression darkened. "I don't know."Richard opened the folder. The first page was dated twenty-two years ago.*SUBJECT: ALEXANDER BLACK*Below it:*STATUS: COMPROMISED*Richard's eyes moved down. Another line.*FAMILY EXPOSURE: UNAVOIDABLE*Then:*RECOMMENDATION: REMOVE THE HEIR FROM ALL KNOWN NETWORKS.*Richard's hands tightened. "The heir."Victor nodded. "You."Richard turned the page. A handwritten note appeared.*Evelyn refuses to cooperate.*Richard stopped
CHAPTER FIFTY: THE MAN ABOVE THEM ALL
By midnight, Richard had stopped asking questions. He had started making decisions. The group returned to Grant's office. No one spoke while Grant locked the doors.Sophia sat on the edge of the desk, her injured shoulder bandaged.Richard looked at her. "How bad?""Annoying.""That's not an answer."She glanced at him. "It's not deep."Richard nodded. "Good."Sophia studied him. "You've changed."Richard looked at her. "Since when?""Since tonight." She paused. "You stopped looking for someone to tell you what the truth was."Richard looked toward the city lights. "Because everyone has been lying.""Not everyone."He turned toward her. She held his gaze. "I haven't."Richard nodded. "I know."It was a simple answer. But Sophia felt the weight behind it.Across the room, Marcus and Victor stood apart. Neither trusted the other.Grant placed the black key on the table. "This opens the original Northstar vault."Richard nodded. "And that's where we're going."Marcus frowned. "You're goi
