I knelt in front of two hundred people and asked her to marry me. She left with another man before I even stood back up. ________________________________________________________ Richard Black had spent three years loving a woman who was never really his, and one humiliating night at a company gala to find that out. What he didn't expect was for that same night to end with a stranger's phone call revealing he wasn't the broke nobody he'd always believed. He was the missing heir to a billion-dollar empire his father built and disappeared from twenty-two years ago. His mother didn't die the way he was told. The grave he grieved at for years wasn't his father's. And the men now hunting him have been waiting for him far longer than he's been alive. Was this his chance to finally matter, or the beginning of a war he was never prepared to survive?

CHAPTER ONE: THE RING IN HIS POCKET

Richard Black would remember this night for the rest of his life.

Not for the reason he thought.

Three hours earlier, he had stood in front of a mirror, adjusting a tie that didn't need adjusting, while his best friend Lucas Voss watched with growing amusement.

"Richard."

"What?"

"Unless that tie personally offended you, leave it alone."

Richard's fingers were cold. His stomach was tight. On the table behind him sat a small velvet box. Three months of overtime. Three months of skipped lunches. Three months of wearing shoes that should've been replaced a year ago. Every extra shift at Westbridge. Every sacrifice. All of it compressed into one ring.

All for Cara.

"You really went all out," Lucas said, watching him pocket the box.

"I wanted it to be special."

"She knows you don't have much, right?"

Richard smiled. It was the easy, certain smile of a man who had never once doubted the answer. "She never cared about that."

He believed it completely.

Three years ago, Cara Williams had walked into his life when he had nothing. No money. No direction. A dead-end admin job at Westbridge that paid just enough to survive. She never made him feel small for it. She ate cheap meals beside him without complaint. She walked beside him when he couldn't afford a taxi, never once mentioning it, never once making him feel like less of a man for it. She told him money wasn't everything.

He had believed her then, too.

There had been nights, back when things were hardest, when Richard wondered what a woman like her was doing with a man like him. She could have had anyone. Instead she chose to sit across from him at a plastic table in a noodle shop that smelled faintly of old grease, laughing at his terrible jokes like they were the funniest thing she'd ever heard. He used to think that was proof of something rare. Real love, the kind that didn't need convincing.

He still thought that, standing here with the box in his pocket.

"Ready?" Lucas asked.

Richard took a breath, felt his pulse hammering in his throat, and nodded.

"Tonight," he said, "I'm changing my life."

He had no idea how right he was.

The Westbridge annual gala looked like a different planet. Chandeliers. Champagne on silver trays. Men in suits that cost more than Richard made in a year, laughing beside women dripping in jewelry.

Richard checked his own jacket. Not expensive. Not designer. Clean, though. That would have to be enough.

"Stop looking at people's clothes," Lucas muttered.

"I'm not."

"You are."

Then Richard saw her.

Cara.

Black gown. Blonde hair loose over her shoulders. The kind of beautiful that made a crowded room go quiet in his head. She turned, saw him, and her face lit up.

"Richard!"

She crossed the floor and wrapped her arms around him, and for a moment the entire ballroom disappeared. Just her. Just this.

"You look handsome," she said.

"Just handsome?"

"Very handsome." She laughed and reached up to fix his tie, the one he'd already fixed a dozen times. "You're nervous."

"I'm not."

"You're a terrible liar."

If only she knew how right she was.

They danced. They drank. She rested her head against his shoulder while other couples spun around them, and Richard let himself imagine it: the apartment, the wedding, the kids running through a living room that didn't exist yet. A simple dream. His dream.

Nothing extravagant. No mansion, no yacht, no life splashed across a magazine spread. Just her, coming home to him every night, and him coming home to her. He used to think that kind of life sounded boring to people like the ones in this ballroom. To him it sounded like everything.

His hand found the ring box in his jacket.

Soon.

"Richard."

He turned. Marcus Steele stood there in a suit that probably cost more than Richard's entire wardrobe combined. Westbridge's youngest executive, and everyone's favorite golden boy.

"Marcus."

"Enjoying the evening?" Marcus's eyes flicked to Cara. Lingered half a second too long. "You both look great."

He raised his glass and walked off before Richard could answer.

Cara was still watching him go.

"Cara?"

"Hmm?" She blinked, snapping back. "I'm fine."

Richard believed her.

He always believed her.

Near midnight, the host stepped onto the stage and announced the floor was open for a few words from the guests. Richard's heart slammed against his ribs. His palms went damp. He wiped them on his trousers, found Lucas's eyes, and nodded.

"Are you sure?" Lucas asked.

"I've never been more sure."

He crossed the ballroom floor. A hundred pairs of eyes turned toward him. His shoes felt impossibly heavy. He stopped in front of Cara, confused, smiling, beautiful, and dropped to one knee.

The room erupted.

He opened the box. The diamond caught the light.

"Cara Williams." His voice cracked. "I've imagined this moment a thousand times, and I still don't know what to say. But I know what I feel. You came into my life with nothing to gain from me, and you stayed anyway. You made me feel like I was enough."

Somewhere behind her smile, something was already breaking. He didn't see it yet.

"So, Cara, will you marry me?"

The applause exploded.

Cara didn't move.

One second passed. Then another. The clapping died into an uneasy hush, and Richard's smile began, slowly, to fall apart.

"Cara?"

Her eyes were full of tears. Her lips parted. Nothing came out.

Somewhere behind him, he heard Lucas shift, the way people shift when they can feel a room turning wrong before they understand why. Richard didn't look back. He couldn't take his eyes off her face, off whatever it was she was trying and failing to say.

And that was when Richard understood, before she said a single word, that something in this room was about to end him.
