Osric’s Warning at the Tavern
"And if you don't show?" Valeria challenged, her gaze narrowing as she crossed her arms tightly over her chest, the loose fabric of her patched wool tunic pulling taut against the bitter draft leaking through the window frame. "What then? Do they send Captain Vane and his glorious municipal guard to drag you out by your heels?""They wouldn't risk another public spectacle so soon after the bridge bottleneck," Valerian replied, rubbing the back of his stiff neck as he paced the three short strides the room permitted. "More likely, Magistrate Galt would simply lean on the wharf foremen, quietly rewrite the local trade ordinances overnight, and make life impossible for every tenant between here and the harbor. It’s an invitation, yes, but it’s also an ultimatum wrapped in bureaucratic velvet.""Which means you have to go," Valeria said flatly, her tone dropping into a cold, pragmatic register that brooked no argument, even as a muscle ticked warningly in her jaw. "Walk right into their p

The Winter Market
"Walk right into their parlor, nod politely, and tell them exactly nothing," Valerian finished for her, pulling on his damp wool coat with a sharp wincing hiss as the frozen fabric bit into his stiffened shoulders. "Then I come back here, eat whatever stale crust you've managed to scrounge from the bakery bin, and we wake up to do it all over again.""Don't romanticize it," Valeria muttered, turning back to the rough deal table she had dragged closer to the hearthless corner of the room. "You aren't a rebel hero making a grand statement. You're a man with chilblains and a very narrow window before the local landlords try to slap an illegal snow-removal tax on these tenements. Now get out. If you're late for your meeting with Galt, he'll take it as a personal insult, and if you're early, he'll think you're desperate."Valerian paused at the warped timber door, his hand resting on the iron latch. "And what will you be doing while I'm trading legal insults with the magistrate?""Building

The Storm Breaks
"Building a paper wall they can't pierce," Valeria answered without looking up, her ink-stained fingers already smoothing a fresh sheet of rough parchment across the deal table. "If Galt thinks he can squeeze the Lower Wards from the top down, I'm going to make sure every tenant from here to the salt marshes holds a certified, notarized title of occupancy that even his corrupt little cronies can't void without a riot. Go on. Save the world later; we have rent disputes to bulletproof right now."Valerian gave a short nod, pulled the heavy iron latch, and stepped out into the freezing bite of the Lower Wards. The transition from the stifling, damp interior of the tenement to the howling alleyways was immediate and brutal. A sudden gust of wind—sharp enough to strip the skin from an unmasked cheek—whipped down the narrow corridor between the sagging timber buildings, carrying with it the unmistakable, metallic scent of wet slate and freezing sleet. The sky overhead was not merely grey; i

Surviving the Freeze
The sky overhead was not merely grey; it was the bruised, opaque purple of a frozen bruise, pressing down so low upon the sagging rooftops of the Lower Wards that the chimneys seemed to scrape against the clouds. By dusk, the sleet had surrendered to a full, howling blizzard. The wind shrieked through the alleys like an unburied ghost, driving fine, needle-sharp granules of snow through every warped gap in the doorframes and window shutters. Inside the cramped tenement room, the single iron stove ticked and groaned as the metallic walls fought a losing battle against the encroaching frost.Valeria didn't look up from her table when the heavy timber door slammed shut against the gale, rattling the iron latch. She dipped her cheap, split-nib quill into the watery ink pot, her breath pluming white in the unheated air as she pressed the nib hard against a fresh sheet of parchment."The pipes on the third-floor landing are groaning again," Valeria said, her voice dry and steady, cutting cl

The Cobbles and the Ink
"The pipes on the third-floor landing are groaning again," Valeria said, her voice dry and steady, cutting through the rhythmic scratch of Valerian’s knife against the pine wood.Valerian didn't look up immediately, his thumb pressing firmly against the flat of the blade as he shaved another thin sliver of graphite to sharpen his stubby pencil. "Groaning means they haven't burst yet," he replied, his breath pluming in a dense white cloud that hovered briefly over the makeshift desk before dissolving into the damp chill of the room. "The moment they go silent is when you panic. That’s when the water turns to solid block and splits the lead right down the seam.""Easy for you to say. You aren't the one who has to explain to old Mrs. Garrow why her kitchen is currently lined with half an inch of grey municipal slush," Valeria muttered, her hand moving across the parchment with practiced speed. She dipped her cheap quill into the water-thinned ink pot, the scratching sound resuming with a
