Chapter 1: The Worse thing
Congratulations, Host.] [You have died.] Ezra stared at the words floating in front of his face. They hung in the dark like they'd always been there, pale blue letters with no source, no glow spilling onto the rubble around him. "What?" His voice didn't echo. That was the first wrong thing. A collapsed subway tunnel should echo. [Don't worry.] [You are about to become something much worse.] The letters blinked out. For a second there was nothing. No pain, no cold, no weight of the ceiling that had come down on him four minutes ago. No corpse under his hand. Then all of it hit at once, and Ezra sucked in a breath like he'd been underwater. He was on his back. Concrete dust coated the inside of his throat. His right hand was still wrapped around a wrist that wasn't warm and wasn't cold, just still, in a way nothing alive had ever been under his fingers. He let go so fast he cracked his elbow on the rail behind him. "Okay," he said, to nobody. "Okay, okay, okay." The body he'
Chapter 2: No Numbers
Ezra killed the flashlight. It was a stupid instinct, the kind that got couriers killed in the Underlevels every week, but the footsteps hadn't sped up when the light went out, and that told him something worse than darkness. Whatever was coming wasn't hunting by sight.*Smart,* Vaelgrith said, entirely too calm for a voice that lived in his skull now. *Wrong, but smart.*"Which part's wrong."*The part where you think hiding works on something that's been listening for me for three hundred years*The footsteps stopped.Ezra pressed his back to the collapsed rail car beside him, close enough to a god's corpse that he could feel cold radiating off the black glass stump where its hand used to be, and made himself breathe slow. Somewhere in the dark ahead of him, something exhaled, a long wet sound like a lung twice the size it should have been.[Target 1 of 9: Rank Unknown][Advisory: You currently possess no combat-relevant Stats or Abilities.][Advisory: Recommend evasion.]"Great sys
Chapter 3: Investigator Rourke
"I was on a delivery," Ezra said. "Ceiling gave out. I fell."It wasn't a lie, technically, which was the only reason he managed to say it without his voice cracking.Rourke didn't blink. She had the kind of stare that made you feel like you were being cross-referenced against a database in real time, and given she was A-Rank Guild, Ezra wasn't entirely sure that wasn't literal."A ceiling gave out," she repeated, "in a sealed structural zone that hasn't registered foot traffic in three years, and forty seconds later my grid logs an energy spike that reads like a Rank-S combat event with zero combat present." She stepped closer. "Try again."*She's good,* Vaelgrith said, mild as a man commenting on the weather. *Tell her the truth. Watch what happens.*"Not helpful," Ezra muttered."What?""Talking to myself," Ezra said. "Bad day."Rourke's eyes flicked to the blood drying on his forearm, the dust in his hair, the way he was still breathing like he'd sprinted a mile. Whatever calculat
Chapter 4: Nerve
Ezra didn't go home.Home meant a landlord who'd already texted twice about rent, and neighbors who'd notice a Guild containment van parked outside, and six hours that would spend themselves whether he used them or not. He stood on that plaza with Rourke's card in one hand and a dead god's voice in the other and did the only math that made sense to him.If he waited, they came for him.If he moved first, at least it was his choice."Fine," he said, and turned back toward the stairwell. "We do this now."*Good,* Vaelgrith said. *Then let's be honest with each other before you get yourself killed doing it. You have no Abilities. No Stats. No training worth mentioning. Whatever gets you through that tunnel tonight isn't going to come from me.*"Thought you were supposed to be helping."*I'm supposed to be finishing something. You're the tool. Tools that break before the job's done are useless to me, so understand this clearly: I will not carry you through this fight. You survive on your
Chapter 5: What It Costs
The second swing never landed the way Ezra meant it to.He brought the rebar down aiming for the creature's skull and felt his own arm move wrong halfway through the motion, faster than he'd told it to, angle correcting itself mid-swing like something had reached in and adjusted his aim for him. The bar caught the creature square between the gill-slits instead, and it went down without another sound, folding in on itself the way the god's corpse had, stone and glass instead of blood.Ezra stood over it, chest heaving, rebar still gripped in both hands, and didn't remember deciding to correct his swing at all."Did you do that."*I suggested a better angle,* Vaelgrith said. *You're welcome.*"I didn't feel you suggest anything. I felt my arm move on its own."The voice didn't answer right away, and the silence told Ezra more than an answer would have.[Target 1 of 9: Eliminated][Ability Transfer: Initiating][Skill Acquired: Pressure Sense]The words hung in front of him a beat longe
Chapter 6: The Rankings Board
Ezra made it four blocks before he understood why people kept looking at him twice. The first few he wrote off as paranoia, adrenaline still working its way out of his system, the kind of jumpy hyperawareness that came standard after nearly losing a fight to something with no eyes.By the fifth stranger who slowed down to stare, he stopped and caught his own reflection in a storefront window and understood. He was standing straighter. He hadn't noticed himself doing it. Three years of flinching smaller in public, shoulders in, eyes down, had come off him somewhere in that tunnel like a coat he'd forgotten he was wearing.*Interesting,* Vaelgrith said, entirely too pleased with itself. *You didn't used to walk like that.*"Didn't have a reason to."*You still don't have much of one. One kill. One Skill. Don't confuse surviving with being strong.*Ezra kept walking anyway. He couldn't help it.The Guild's public rankings board sat in the middle of Cathedral Plaza, a massive holographic
Chapter 7: The Old Man in the Waiting Room
The Guild tower's lobby smelled like ozone and floor polish, the particular sterile cleanliness of a building that ran background scans on everyone who walked through its doors and wanted you to know it.Ezra had been inside exactly twice in three years, both times to collect a courier contract from a bored clerk who hadn't bothered to look up from her terminal. This time a security escort met him at the door before he'd finished crossing the threshold, polite, thorough, and unmistakably armed."Investigator Rourke is finishing a briefing," the escort said. "You'll wait in Room 4."Room 4 turned out to be a windowless box with two chairs and a table, the kind of room built for conversations the Guild didn't want overheard. Ezra sat, because standing felt like inviting a fight he didn't want yet, and counted the seconds on the clock mounted above the door instead of thinking about the body Rourke's team had pulled out of Sublevel 4.He wasn't alone for long. The door opened without a k
Chapter 8: What the Guild Doesn't Write Down
Rourke didn't sit.She stood in the doorway with the tablet still in her hand, weight balanced like she hadn't decided yet whether this was a room she needed to be ready to fight her way out of, and looked at Garrick the way Ezra imagined she looked at evidence that didn't fit the case file."You have thirty seconds," she said, "before I call this in as an unauthorized consultant tampering with an active investigation.""Then I'll talk fast." Garrick didn't move from his chair, didn't raise his voice, which somehow made him harder to interrupt than if he'd shouted. "Your Sublevel 4 corpse. Run its tissue signature against pre-Awakening Guild archives, not the current database. Go back three hundred years.""That archive isn't digitized. Nobody's cross-referenced it in decades.""I know. I did the cross-referencing myself, thirty years ago, on a different body that looked exactly like this one." Garrick's voice stayed level, but something underneath it had gone hard, the tone of a man
Chapter 9: Second Name
"You may not like which answer is true."Ezra sat with that sentence a long time after the door had clicked shut behind Garrick, long enough that a Guild attendant eventually stuck her head in to ask if he needed an escort out. He didn't remember answering her. He remembered walking, mostly streets blurring past in the kind of daze that came after a day too long to process standing still. He didn't make it home before the System caught up with him.[Objective Update: Target 2 Located][Target 2 of 9: Rank Unknown — Current Position: 2.4km, Riverside District]*Don't,* Vaelgrith said immediately, before Ezra had even fully registered the notification. *Not tonight. You haven't slept. You haven't eaten. Whatever's waiting at that marker will smell weakness on you before you're within a hundred meters.*"You're the one who told me thirty days doesn't stretch for good timing."*It doesn't. That's not the same as telling you to walk into the second kill running on no sleep and one Skill y
Chapter 10: Whose Hands
Ezra woke up on concrete that wasn't where he remembered falling. The sodium lights overhead were the same ones from the pier, buzzing their same tired orange, but he was thirty feet from where he'd gone down, sprawled against a cargo container with a dent in it the exact shape of a human body. His body, judging by the way his shoulder screamed when he tried to sit up.The four men who'd surrounded him were gone. Not fled. Gone. Ezra's stomach turned over slow and cold as his eyes adjusted, tracking the shapes scattered around the pier in the orange light. Two of them weren't moving at all, folded wrong in ways bodies weren't supposed to fold. A third was slumped against the footbridge railing, breathing but barely, one arm bent backward at the elbow. The fourth, the one who'd done the talking, was nowhere Ezra could see, and the drag marks leading off toward the river told him more than he wanted to know about why.He counted them again, hoping the number would change the second tim
