Note: this talks mainly about the novel, giving a brief introduction, it is optional to read, enjoy the story.A gravedigger everyone calls "Hollow" , a man born without the power to sense the world's magic, inherits a cursed relic that turns grief into godlike strength. To become the strongest being in the universe, he only has to let everyone he loves die. He intends to prove there's another way.The city of Lastlight, built at the seam between three collapsing star-realms known as the Continuum. Most people are born with an affinity to sense and channel aether, magic drawn from the stars overhead. A small percentage are born Hollow: unable to sense aether at all, treated as subhuman, used as expendable labor.Wren Castellan, 19, is Hollow. He works as a gravedigger's assistant in the slum district, burying the poor no temple will touch. He is publicly humiliated early in his life by the ruling Vayne family, cementing his reputation as "trash." His only family is Old Mercy, the elder

The world went quiet in a way that had nothing to do with sound.Wren was aware, distantly, that people were still screaming - the orphans by the fence, someone's mother somewhere behind him, the warden shouting an order that nobody was listening to anymore - but all of it arrived muffled, like he was hearing it through the clay he'd spent the morning digging out of Old Tam's grave. What filled the space where the noise should have been was a single, perfect stillness, centered on the spot where Old Mercy lay in the dirt with her eyes half open and the grey Lastlight sky reflected in them, not blinking. He did not remember crossing the distance between them. He remembered kneeling. He remembered that her hand was still warm, which felt like the cruelest fact he had ever learned, because warm hands were supposed to mean there was time, and there was no time, there was no time at all, there had never once in nineteen years been enough time.Something in his chest tore. That was the only

They buried Old Mercy the next morning, in the plot she'd have chosen herself if anyone had thought to ask her while she was alive - third row, under the leaning elm, next to the grave of a woman named Cass who Wren only knew from the stories Old Mercy used to tell about the year the fever came through and the two of them had dug forty graves in a single terrible month and never once, in forty years afterward, spoken about it again. He dug it himself. Nobody offered to help, and he wouldn't have let them if they had. It felt like the last honest thing he had left to give her - the same work she'd taught him, done with his own two hands, no shortcuts, no shimmer of borrowed strength making the shovel lighter than it should have been. He kept the Ledger's power folded down tight the whole time, refusing it, the way you'd refuse a meal offered by someone you didn't trust not to poison it. It didn't argue. It didn't need to. It simply waited, patient as smoke, at the edge of his vision, w

He waited until the district had gone properly dark before he asked the Ledger to show him the entry.Sable had taken the orphans to sleep in the tannery loft for the night - safer, she'd argued, than the shed, now that half the district knew where to find him - but Wren had stayed behind, sitting on the overturned crate with his back against the burial-cloth and Old Mercy's grave visible through the shed's cracked door, a dark seam in the third row under the leaning elm. He hadn't slept the night before. He didn't expect to sleep tonight either.Show me, he thought, into the quiet. The entry. Hers. The Ledger opened without ceremony - no flourish, no dramatic unfurling of pages, just a simple unfolding of the bruise-purple light into a rectangle of text that hung in the dark air of the shed, legible only to him. Wren made himself read it in full, though every instinct in him wanted to look away.ENTRY: MERCY VANDEL. BOND DURATION: SIXTEEN YEARS. BOND CLASSIFICATION: GUARDIAN - TOTAL.

Voss came back two days later, alone this time, and waited at the fence with the same unhurried patience he'd shown the first time, as if he had all the time in the world and no particular investment in whether Wren used it or wasted it. Wren had half expected him to send a runner instead. The fact that he'd come himself, a second time, into a district his own coat marked him as an outsider in, told Wren more about how badly the man needed this than any amount of talking would have."You've had two days," Voss said, without preamble. "I told you to think fast. I meant it.""I heard you the first time." Wren leaned against the gatepost, arms crossed, and studied the captain's weathered face for whatever tell might give away more than his words did. There wasn't one. Voss had the kind of face that had learned, a long time ago, not to hand out information for free. "Before I agree to anything, I want to know what it actually costs. Not the pretty version. The real one.""Fair." Voss didn
