Wren sat with the question for a long time before answering, because he understood, with total clarity, that whatever he said next would matter more than anything he had said or done since a truncheon crumpled in his hand outside a slum-district graveyard. He was aware of Sable's steady presence beside him, of Pim's small hand still resting in his own, of Ferys standing quiet and watchful a few paces back, of the Ledger's presence, warm and attentive, waiting behind his sternum for an answer it did not already know."I don't want your Crown," Wren said finally. "I never did. I didn't come here to take your place, or to prove I'm strong enough to replace you at the top of something that was never actually a throne. I came here because you asked me to, and because I think, underneath everything you built out of grief you never chose, there's still a person who wanted, once, to spare people the pain you carried. You just built the wrong kind of mercy.""Then what would you have me do ins

The town was called Fen's Landing, and Wren had never been there before, which was, by that point in his life, an increasingly rare thing. He was older now - not old, not yet, but old enough that the boys who watched him work the shovel in the town's small burial ground called him sir without being told to, and old enough that his hands, still steady, still carrying the whole of Old Mercy's sixteen years of patience in every motion, had begun to show the particular weathering of a man who had spent a long, full life doing exactly the work he'd started with. He liked it that way. He'd had opportunities, over the years, to become something grander - a name spoken with the same hushed reverence people once reserved for the Widowed Crown itself, a figure people traveled great distances simply to see. He had turned most of that down, quietly and without much fuss, because he had learned a long time ago, in a slum-district graveyard, that the truest measure of what he'd built was never goin

The lecture hall in Cael's Rest - rebuilt, decades on, from the same temple ruins where Wren had first met Ferys - held perhaps two hundred people the evening Pim delivered what would become known, in the careful academic circles that had grown up around the study of willingness-fuel, as the Ashfall Address. She was well into middle age by then, sharp-eyed as ever, with the particular unhurried authority of someone who had spent her entire adult life turning a childhood spent surviving into a life spent understanding."I was seven years old the first time I watched an account change because a village decided to dig one well instead of three," she told the gathered scholars, without notes, because she had never needed them for this particular story. "I didn't understand, then, that I was watching something that had never happened before in the account's entire recorded history. I just knew that everybody working together felt better than everybody working alone, and that seemed, to a s

The street named after him embarrassed him for the entirety of the eleven years he lived to see it, and he said so, loudly and often, to anyone who brought it up - a fact that amused Wren considerably more than it amused Voss himself."You could just accept the honor gracefully," Wren told him once, the two of them older now, sharing a quiet drink in the same district that had once been Lastlight's slum quarter. "It's not going to kill you.""I spent twenty-two years being an unremarkable warden precisely because unremarkable was useful," Voss said. "A man with a street named after him stops being unremarkable. That's bad for the work, whatever the work happens to be at the time."He never stopped working, in one form or another, even after his formal retirement from the city watch. He spent his remaining years as an informal advisor to the reformed city magistracy that emerged, slowly and imperfectly, from the wreckage of Cindergate's broken conscription empire - training the next ge
