The archives of Oakhaven smelled of stagnant dust and the creeping rot of damp parchment. For Oryndel, who had spent the last three weeks sleeping on a cot in a boarding house that smelled of boiled cabbage and regret, the suffocating atmosphere of the Royal Treasury was simply another layer of his new, bleak reality. He adjusted his collar, feeling the rough, cheap wool scratch against his neck.A thin, jittery boy with ink-stained fingers scurried up to him, clutching a bundle of ledgers to his chest. This was Caelros, the man assigned to show Oryndel the ropes."Morning, sir," Caelros squeaked, his eyes darting toward the heavy, iron-bound doors of the upper offices. "I’m Caelros. I’m meant to help you settle in."Oryndel sighed, dropping his leather satchel onto the scarred oak desk. "Just Oryndel, alright? The 'sir' is a bit much. I’m just here to count coins and keep the king’s books straight."Caelros winced, leaning in as if the walls might be listening. "Keep your voice down,

The summons arrived not by courier, but by a man in a black tunic whose presence in the boarding house hallway felt like an infection. He didn't speak; he simply held out a heavy, wax-sealed scroll. It bore the crest of the Finance Minister, Drevian Solk.Oryndel stared at the seal, his throat dry. He knew this was the end of the game. He took the parchment, his fingers trembling, and watched the man retreat into the shadows of the staircase."Just a summons," Oryndel murmured to his locked door. "Just a meeting. Keep breathing."The office of the Finance Minister was situated in the highest spire of the Royal Treasury, a room that looked down upon the city like a predatory bird. When Oryndel walked in, the sheer opulence of the space hit him—polished mahogany, floor-to-ceiling tapestries, and a desk that looked like it had been hewn from a single, massive boulder of dark marble.Drevian Solk stood by the window, swirling a crystal glass of amber liquid. He didn't turn when Oryndel en

The air in the barracks office was stale, thick with the smell of old parchment and the sharp, metallic tang of the Commander’s wine. Oryndel watched as Qazren Morth rolled up the incriminating documents, his jaw set like granite."You’re sure about this, Oryndel?" Morth asked, his gaze piercing. "Once we walk into that Council chamber, there is no turning back. They won’t just fire you. They’ll erase you."Oryndel tightened his grip on his satchel. "I’m sure, Commander. I’ve checked the math ten times over. The gold didn't just vanish; it was systematically routed into private accounts through dummy grain contractors. It’s an open-and-shut case of treason, if someone has the spine to read the pages."Morth grunted, tossing a heavy cloak toward him. "Spinelessness is a plague in Oakhaven, but today, we’re going to act like it’s a virtue. Put this on. We move now, before Solk has time to scrub the secondary ledgers."The walk to the Royal Council chamber was a blur of torchlight and sh

"The math, Your Holiness. It doesn't lie. And now, neither can you," Oryndel said, his voice ringing against the cold stone of the crypt.Zorvik Halden, the High Priest, descended the stone steps with the measured, slow grace of a predatory cat. His white robes brushed the floor with a sound like a whisper of ghosts. "Math is a language for slaves, accountant. It is a way to measure the world, but it cannot comprehend the divine will that shapes it."Oryndel tightened his grip on his knife, his knuckles white. "Is that what you call it? Divine will? I call it embezzlement on a kingdom-wide scale. I’ve seen the grain quotas. I’ve seen the missing shipments. This gold… it isn't for the church, is it?"The High Priest stopped a few paces away. He smiled, but the expression didn't reach his eyes, which remained as cold and hollow as dead stars. "You’ve been digging through the muck, haven't you? It’s a pity. You could have lived a long, quiet life, counting coins for men who would never k

The heavy iron gate creaked open just enough for a man to slip through, the rusted hinges whining like a dying beast against the roar of the cathedral district behind them."Move, clerk," Tervik hissed, yanking Oryndel by the rough wool of his sleeve and hauling him into the suffocating darkness of an alleyway. "If you trip over your own boots out here, I am not stopping to carry you. The Faith Militant isn't checking tax receipts tonight; they're slitting throats and calling it holy work."Oryndel stumbled, his shoulder slamming hard against a soot-stained brick wall. He clutched the dark, leather-bound ledger tight to his chest, his knuckles white. The cold air burned his lungs, thick with the oily stench of burning timber and scorched wool."I have it," Oryndel panted, staring past the older man’s shoulder toward the plaza. Flames danced high against the bruised autumn sky, casting jagged, monstrous shadows across the cobblestones. "I have the duplicate property titles, Tervik. Jha
