Chapter 031
By the time we had dug the trap, lined it with stakes, and camouflaged it, we were all close to exhaustion. My hands were trembling from how much I had put them through, and even though I thought my wounds from fighting the wolf, Perry, and Hans had healed, I ached and throbbed all over from exertion. The new scars felt as though they were on fire, and I was longing to sit down, let myself go horizontal, and sleep for the next few days.“I never want to see another hole again,” Elsa moaned, collapsing to the ground dramatically. All of us had been busy for the entire day. After digging Bernard’s grave and the pit for the trap, we had to camouflage the pit somehow. One of the girls had come up with the idea of weaving thin branches together to create a lattice structure, and we had spent the rest of the daylight hours gathering enough branches and soil and rocks to cover the pit. Now all we have to do is avoid falling into it, I thought wearily. It was not the

“Whose is it?” Elsa demanded, her arms crossed as she edged closer to Rosie. The managerial iciness that had earned the nickname, the Ice Queen, was back in full force in Elsa’s voice. I had to smile a little as I watched Rosie turn to her. For a brief moment, things felt familiar, even though we were as far removed from our previous environment as we could possibly be. Everyone turned to Rosie within the next few moments, and she quailed a little under the weight of the gazes on her.“I think it’s Felicia’s,” Rosie replied, her voice rising at the end of her sentence. She’s unsure of it, then? What if she’s wrong? I thought. “I think I remember seeing it on Felicia.”“Felicia? Do you mean Felicia Fletcher?” Claire cut in, her brows furrowed. “She was with us at first. Felicia was already with Hans when he persuaded you and me to join him, right?”“That’s right,&rdquo
Chapter 033
“Breakfast time,” Rosie exclaimed, shaking Yvonne, Elsa, and I awake. She, Claire, and Euphie had taken the second shift, and had prepared breakfast by the time we awoke.Sunlight was streaming through the mouth of the cave, dispelling the shadows that the night had cast. I was feeling more cheerful, too. The day felt a lot less intimidating than the night, even though Hans’s threat and Felicia’s possible spying still hung over our heads. The smell wafting from the fire made my stomach rumble, clearing away the last of my worries, too.“Let’s eat!” I exclaimed, making my way over after taking a quick swig of water to rinse my mouth out. Breakfast consisted of boiled cassava and more of the strange banana-like fruits we had found previously, but no one was complaining. It seemed like everyone was happy to have something to eat.Who would have thought that I, Forrest Chaplain, would ever have the company of this many beautiful w
Chapter 034
“We have to take care of this, Yvonne,” I told her, sighing only a little. Who could fault her indefatigable attitude? “I need you to stay here in the shade. Don’t go anywhere, okay?”“Okay,” she agreed, trying her best to smile back at me even though I knew she had to be in pain. The sunburn looked worse than usual to me - her skin looked to be quite red, almost like that of a lobster’s. If she got an infection, since skin that had been rubbed raw was essentially an open wound, we had no way to treat her. I had to find something that we could use.I headed for the hill I had been lying atop the day I had followed Hans and his men back from the ocean. While scrambling up the hill, I had seen something that I thought would be of use, but I wasn’t entirely sure. I climbed up the hill, huffing and puffing my way along. Seems a little harder than the day you first climbed it, I thought. Maybe adrenaline was pushing you alon
Chapter 035
“This is how you gut the fish,” I explained, squatting by the river. “First, you…”“Wait! Can’t you move further downstream?” Elsa complained, putting her hands on her hips. “We’re right where we were bathing earlier!” I looked at the others incredulously, wondering if anyone was thinking the same. You idiot, was what I was thinking. The river is a bloody river. It flows out to the sea. It doesn’t matter where we clean the fish - it’ll all flow away.“I guess Elsa has a point,” Euphie conceded reluctantly. “Let’s just move downstream for peace of mind. After all, we did agree that we would do our business far downstream if we ever needed to relieve ourselves while at the lake.”With a sigh, I picked up the wide basket that held the five fish we had caught, and moved further downstream.“This is good, thanks,” Elsa announced imperiously once we

“Come on. I need you to fill up the bottles with water. Can you do that?” I asked gently after Claire’s sobs had died down. Shakily, she nodded, but made no move to begin doing so. I put the bottles next to her, along with the large tin, and left her to it.“I’m going to explore the wreckage of the plane again,” I told her, and she nodded. To tell the truth, I wasn’t expecting to find anything useful on the plane. I knew that Hans had looted it several times, and by now, after a week, anything that was perishable had to have expired already. Still, I wanted something to do aside from sitting by Claire while she was distraught, and exploring the plane wreck would have to do.Covering my nose and mouth with my shirt, I climbed into the wreck and stepped gingerly around the debris on the floor. The front half of the plane was quite charred, and I spared it only a quick peek before moving on. The bodies there were now slowly decaying,

The rain only got heavier. Outside, lightning flashed, heralding the thunder that followed soon after. Idly, I started counting. One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three… Crash! The clap of thunder rang out, echoing through the cave, and I sighed. Since light moved faster than sound, counting the seconds between the strike of lightning and the clap of thunder allowed one to find out how far away the storm was. If I had reached five Mississippi, then the storm would have been a mile away. As it was, the rain showed no signs of letting up. We were truly right in the middle of a thunderstorm. The fire close to the mouth of the cave was sputtering out slowly, dimming with each rabid gust of wind that attacked the cave. Thank goodness for the second one, I thought. It was small, but it was still going strong. I hope this rain stops by the time dawn breaks. We still have some cassava tubers, but we don't have anything else. It’s enough for one meal, but we’ll all be

Euphie and I slept on the ground by the second fire. When I awoke, I had a godawful crick in my neck from sleeping sitting up, especially since I had nothing to lean against at all. Groaning quietly, I tried to stretch out the kinks in my neck and my back (thank god there’s nothing in my crack, my brain supplied) without waking Euphie up. She had lain down at some point, and her head was pillowed on my lap. The back of her head was pressed against the junction of my thigh and my torso, and she was breathing deeply, clearly not awake yet.Moving as slowly as I could, I laced my hands beneath her head so that I could lift it off my lap. I scooted my ass away from Euphie, trying to gain enough distance before lowering her head back down to the ground so that I could stand up and move around, but she jolted awake with a start.“Argh!” she groaned, sitting up quickly and smoothing a hand over her hair. “What the fuck… Oh. Um. Guess I fell asleep,&

“I found footprints,” Yvonne cried, taking a step closer and clinging to me for comfort. I felt a little self-conscious hugging her back, since I had not been blatant about being close to any of the women in broad daylight. Except for that time you fucked Rosie at the river, I thought, then shook the thought off. Now’s not the time to think about sex! I have to focus!“Calm down. It’s okay,” I tried to console Yvonne, stroking her back and taking care not to have my hand dip too far down. I just rubbed between her shoulder blades, waiting until she had stopped sounding as though she were about to hyperventilate.“What did you see?” I asked.“We… we saw footprints near the camp. About five minutes away,” Yvonne explained, her voice trembling and hitching as she spoke.“Yeah! There were so many of them in the mud. Yvonne and I put our feet next to the prints to see whether they belonged to a m
Chapter 040
The trek was far more exhausting than any of us had anticipated, least of all me. I had been relatively unfit before the plane crash, as I had never cultivated the habit of going to the gym to work out. I did no other exercise aside from running for the bus, or carrying heavy bags of groceries home. Still, being a man made me physically stronger than the rest of the girls. I had known this deep down, but I had not fathomed just how different we were. After packing, we had set off immediately, determined to take advantage of the rest of the daylight - or what little there was left of it, anyway. Time had passed too quickly while we were staring at the mutilated body we had found and packing our things after that, and it was close to twilight already. We had only been walking for about an hour when I noticed that the girls were falling behind. Euphie was still right next to me, but everyone else was not. I stopped for a moment, turning around. Elsa and Yvonne were a few meters aw
