Chapter 061
“Get some sleep,” Nicholas instructed Dave. “You’re still injured.” I winced upon hearing his words, knowing that Dave’s injuries were, well, all my fault. After all, I had fought him, and had given him several lacerations that had to be hurting still, despite the clove salve we had tried to apply.“It’s okay. I’m fine,” Dave protested stubbornly.“Just listen to me and go to sleep,” Nicholas insisted, shoving at his shoulder lightly. The younger man gave in, and the yawn that stretched his face moments after he got up to go and lie down under the shelter we had made showed that he was grateful for Nicholas’s command. Nicholas and I remained around the fire. The fruit we had plucked was long gone, and I was deep in thought about what to do for the next day’s food when he spoke up.“Forrest – you didn’t do anything to my sister, right?”Fuck! How the hell am
Chapter 062
"What is it!" I hollered, picking up the handful of arrows I had sharpened and the crossbow, racing off in the direction that the scream had come from. I was dimly aware of Nicholas, Dave, and Felicia racing along with me, but my senses had sharpened and honed in on what I was hurrying towards.Barely a minute or two later, I found the others. Elsa, Euphie, and Yvonne were standing in a huddle, facing down a wild boar! Yvonne was leaning heavily on Elsa, and I could see that she looked dazed. There was a scratch going down the length of the shin, and blood was trickling lazily out of it.The creature grunted and snorted as it pawed at the ground from a short distance away, before fixing the girls with a glare. I had to act now, or risk having it charge the girls again, from the looks of what had already happened. I raised the crossbow and set the stock, the long piece of wood, against my shoulder before plucking an arrow from my pocket. Aligning the stump end of the arrow
Chapter 063
Guess what? Nicholas and Dave had no idea how to butcher a hog at all."Fish and chicken I can do, but a goddamn pig?" Dave muttered, shaking his head as we heaved the wild boar into the river. We began washing it off, making sure that the pig was as free of mud as it could be before we began. Before I began, anyway, since the two of them had never butchered a large animal before."I've only seen deer butchered," I panted as we heaved the pig back out of the water, setting it down on the river bank. "but I figure that it's about the same size as a pig, so this boar shouldn't be too different. Let's get it on its back so we can gut the thing first."It was indeed just like butchering a deer. My own family had hunted deer during the hunting seasons, and I had worked in the butcher shop during the school holidays. I had butchered the pigs sent to him, and I dredged up those memories as I held my knife with the blade pointing away from me, sticking it first into the wild
Chapter 064
The events of the day had tired everyone out. Although I had been buoyed by the success of the crossbow, the wild boar had been something unexpected. It had resulted in enough food for another few days at least, even though we numbered nine now, instead of six, but it had still been terrifying. Only luck and the crossbow had kept me from being wounded the same way that I had been that first day, when we had confronted the wild dog in the cave Elsa and I had found. That wound had just healed, and I was relieved not to have suffered any more.We all lay down to sleep after Yvonne and I had smoked some of the meat, leaving the rest wrapped up tightly in a spare palm leaf to be sunned as soon as the sun was up the next day. While we were smoking the meat, I noticed that Nicholas and Dave had slipped away. Straining my eyes in the darkness, I saw that they had retreated to the hut instead of sitting around the communal fire in the cave, but they were talking too quietly for me to ov
Chapter 065
Nicholas had to be hiding some sort of information from us, based on what he had said about how we didn’t know everything about the place. I narrowed my eyes as I stared at his retreating back, feeling anger flare up in me. If he really had been sincere about joining us, then he wouldn’t have hidden the information from me, I thought. I had better be careful – he’s probably planning to keep the information from us so that we’ll have to rely on him at some point of time. For the rest of the afternoon, I made more arrows. I had to think of some way to store them, since there was nothing readymade that I could use as a quiver. The plastic bottles we had were too precious to be used as quivers, and so I had made no progress on that front. Still, having enough arrows was better than not having enough to go round if we needed to use the bows.It was approaching evening when Rosie and Yvonne came up to me with a suggestion for dinner.“Hey
Chapter 066
“Hang on. Didn’t he mention that there are lots of wild animals in the area?” I asked, suddenly remembering what Nicholas had said when we had arrived. I had ascertained that the cave was free of any nasty creatures by lobbing a rock into it, and we had settled in without fear after that. The only wild animal we had encountered so far was the wild boar that Elsa, Euphie, and Yvonne had come across.“If he’s really that afraid of wild beasts, why did he bring us here? I can’t wrap my head around it,” I continued. Elsa and Euphie both looked thoughtful.“What if it’s a trap?” Euphie suggested, although she seemed doubtful. “I don’t know what kind of trap he’s planning, unless he’s going to lure wild animals like the wild boars or wild dogs over to attack us. I can’t figure out how he would ensure that he’s safe, though, unless he’s been domesticating these animals and traini
Chapter 067
I groaned. Why on earth was Euphie waking me up in the middle of the night? My eyelids felt as though they weighed a ton, and I had to slap myself in the face lightly in order to feel a little more awake. I stood up with an effort, knowing that sitting down would only tempt me back into sleep."What is it?" I asked, trying to keep the annoyance out of my voice."Nicholas is gone," Euphie said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. Sleep-addled as I was, it took a few moments for me to parse what she had said. I squeezed my eyes tightly shut again, blinked hard a few times, and rubbed my hands over my face before realizing the seriousness of what she had just said."What?!" I nearly exploded, only for Euphie to clap her hand over my mouth in a hurry."Shh. Everyone else is still sleeping. Don't wake them," she hissed, her eyes flashing warningly in the moonlight as she removed her hand from my mouth. "Shut up and listen, Forrest. I got up to go to the bathroom
Chapter 068
Claire was utterly transformed. I had never imagined that she would hook up with Nicholas, of all people, and that she would be so wanton about her desire. It had seemed as though she were frigid, even icier than Elsa, since she had shunned any contact with me after Rosie and I had had sex. Maybe it was just that she did not want to fuck me, but who knows? As I peeped around the tree, she threw her head back in pleasure again, tossing her dark hair back dramatically. It cascaded down her back before flowing over her other shoulder, and Nicholas growled at the sight. One strong hand shot out, and he grabbed her hair in his fist, yanking it backward."Yes! Fuck, just like that! Keep going!" Claire practically screamed, her back bowing in pleasure. She reached back with one hand, as if reaching out for Nicholas even though she had to know there was no way she could reach him, and he shoved into her again, letting out another animalistic growl."I don't understand. I thought t
Chapter 069
"Try this," Nicholas instructed, reaching up and plucking one of the fruit off the tree. He held it right up to Claire's face, and she took a step backward, taken aback."Wait! I… I don't know if that's poisonous," Claire stammered, shaking her head nervously."It's a reward for you," Nicholas said slyly. "After all, we just fucked. Why would I feed you something poisonous? I'd rather keep you around so that we can fuck!" Claire grimaced, clearly unhappy with the transactional way that Nicholas had expressed himself, but she took the fruit anyway. There was no other choice. Her hand trembled as she brought her hand to her mouth, taking a tentative bite."Oh. It's sweet, and… a little sour," she murmured, her eyes going wide. "It's good.""See?" Nicholas crowed. I rolled my eyes, already sick of his bragging. Claire brought the fruit to her mouth for another bite, a bigger one this time, and I heard her slurp at the juices of the fruit enthusiastical
Chapter 070
"Why did you take another three? Are they for Yvonne, Elsa, and Rosie?" Euphie asked. I looked at her askance. She was very perceptive! Euphie was right, of course."That's right. I'm going to need to find a place to hide them, though, so that we can give them to the three girls without Nicholas and Claire finding out. If this fruit really has some sort of magical power, I don't want them missing out."We walked a little further until we were only ten minutes away from the camp before wrapping the fruit in a palm leaf and burying them in a shallow hollow we dug under a bush. We went on after that, both eager to get to sleep. The nap we had had earlier was far from being enough, and I was definitely keen to beat Nicholas and Claire back to the camp. Still, my hopes were dashed on that front when Euphie grabbed my hand and tugged on it hard enough to hurt as we were only fifty meters away."Wait!" she hissed, making me take a few stumbling steps backward. "I think Nicho
