The silence that followed Garrow’s threat from the cliff wasn’t the quiet of peace. It was the tight, buzzing pause you get right before the lightning hits an oak tree.Vane didn’t draw his sword. A man who has spent three years climbing through the grease of the capital’s inner ministries knows how to read the air, and the air around Valenport was thick with enough latent spell-current to turn an inquisitor’s brains into boiled porridge. His fingers hovered over the silver seal at his throat for a long, greasy second, his jaw working as he tasted the salt and the bitter ozone of Vesper’s restrained void-magic."This isn't finished, Commander," Vane bit out, his voice sharp enough to skin a rabbit. He took a slow, deliberate step back up the white wooden ramp of the gangplank, never taking his eyes off my face. "Cassian didn't send three hulls just to listen to old ghosts rattle their chains. The tide turns at sunset. When it does, every warehouse from here to the salt-pans is crown p

The first cannon shot didn’t sound like thunder. Thunder rolls across the hills slow and heavy, giving you time to pull your coat tight. A royal bronze thirty-two pounder doesn’t give a damn about rolling. It slaps your ears like a flat oak paddle hitting wet leather, sharp and dry enough to make your jaw rattle and the back of your teeth hurt. From the high watchtower gallery, I saw the smoke bloom out first—a nasty, thick ball of yellow-gray grease bursting from the side of the lead black raider. Two seconds later, the iron ball slammed into the bay fifty yards off warehouse four. It kicked up a column of white foam thirty feet high that rained salty sludge all over Lyra’s pine desk and the fresh chalk lines Cael had just drawn."Cael!" I screamed, but the salt-wind grabbed my voice and tore it to shreds before it even cleared the parapet.Down on the quays, Cael didn't need my shouting. The split second he caught the orange flash on the water, he reached out, snagged Lyra by the co

The forty guards didn't shout. They didn't have to. These weren't town boys dressed up in brass buttons for a parish parade; they were Cassian’s personal iron-heads, men who had spent ten years starving in the border camps until their hearts went stiff as salt-pork.Their heavy broadshields slammed together with a wet *thwack* that rattled the pine boards under our boots. A solid wall of lacquered oak and silver rims, six feet high, three inches thick, closing off the whole narrow gut of the quay like a dead-end alley. Over the top of the shields, forty iron speartips dropped into line, glittering dull and gray through the black coal-smoke."Behind me," I growled, shoving Cael back with my left elbow. My palm was burning like I’d held it over an open stove, the torn linen rag soaked clean through with fresh, dark blood."I can break the line, mother," Vesper spat. The violet static around her shoulders wasn't flickering anymore—it was boiling up, thick and hot, smelling like a wool bl
