CHAPTER 1
The wineglass slipped from Caedmon Sterling's fingers and broke against the marble. There was a hushed silence among the fifty people in the dining room, all turning towards the sound of breaking crystal. And for three seconds, nobody dared to move. Then Caedmon was looking at the pieces on the floor and smiling."Clean it up."His eyes locked on Adrian Vale.He was dressed in a black suit that had been tailored three years ago and mended twice since. Around him the Sterling family glittered in diamonds and watches worth more than an apartment, in silks that marked the names of houses not unlike the ones Adrian had only seen though a store-front glass. He regarded the crystal debris, then Caedmon."I'll have someone to clean it up."Caedmon's smile disappeared. "You misunderstood." He nudged a piece of glass with his shoe. "I said you."A few people laughed.Adrian said nothing.Seraphine Sterling's knuckles had gone white on her fork at the head of the table. "Caedmon."Her brother d
CHAPTER 2
Your father is hunting you too.The words evaporated from Adrian's vision, leaving the ruined dining hall and the scent of scorched marble behind it.'Adrian?' Seraphine's fingers curled around his sleeve, 'what did she mean?'He didn't answer, instead watching Nyxara as she hovered over the ruined palace floor.Almost his height, the woman was kneeling in something close to reverence and that was unnerving him more than the rotting corpse that had just expired in the chamber beneath them.'Stand,' he ordered. The woman came up to her full impressive, dark eyes narrowing against the weak candlelight as if she could penetrate his bones.'Don't call me Your Majesty.''I will if that is what you are.''I don't know what I am.''Then why are you here?''To find out.'Adrian's jaw tightened. 'Start explaining.'Nyxara glanced around broken dining hall. 'Not here.'Caedmon laughed, something higher than he probably intended. 'Excuse me? A stranger walks into our house, kneels to that 'Nyxa
CHAPTER 3
The crystal was cracked before Adrian understood why.A light snap. Than another, smaller crack. Hair thin cracks raced across the golden crystal beneath the black throne.CRACK.The sound rung through Adrian's bones.Seraphine's hands had closed around his sleeve. "Adrian, move."He didn't. He stared at the chamber below, the silver hair of the man still sitting upon the throne, still calling him his son.He tightened his throat. "You know him."Nyxara said nothing."Who is he?""Adrian—""Who is he?"The ground shook beneath them and an opening in the ceiling above them crashed down the ruined hallway. Marbled pieces of fallen pillars and ancient dust littered the floor. Orren was shouting to everyone to retreat and Adrian barely registered it.He crouched at the edge of the widening crack and Dragon Sight tore the mansion away from him. Stone turned to glass and he could see through to the chamber below - the throne, the chains, the golden Core, and the man beside it who radiated s
CHAPTER 4
The doors exploded inwardAdrian hardly reacted in time to the gust of air that shoved him back, his shoulder slamming against the table."Adrian!" Seraphine was already up,"Stay down."Three men stepped through the smoke, their faces uncovered, revealing features that only furthered the tension thick in Adrian's throat. They moved in a careful practiced manner that marked them as something more than soldiers. Hunters. The man in the front wore a black coat lined with silver, a red symbol stitched over his heart. Dragon sight flared in Adrian's vision, revealing the thread running through the fabric, pulsing with power. Contract magic, and a powerful bit of it at that. The man's gaze swept over Adrian. "Here you are."Adrian rolled his shoulder, pushing himself upright, wincing at the protest in his wounded muscle. "Who are you?"The man peeled away a gloved hand, revealing a scarred and angular face. "Ravian Kross. Field Executor for the Ash Covenant."Caedmon found his voice, "Why
CHAPTER 5
The message was still glowing on the phone screen.YOUR FATHER HAS JUST BEEN CAPTURED.His thumb was poised over the glass when another line appeared, falling to the ground before he could process it.THE PERSON WHO GAVE HIM TO THE ASH COVENANT IS STANDING BESIDE YOUAdrian raised his eyes slowly.Everyone was watching him now. Seraphine was closest, but Nyxara was leaning against the broken doorframe, favouring her shoulder. Virelle was rigid. Orren was carved from stone. Caedmon had placed a hand over his wounded arm for the first time in his life, saying nothing. The phone buzzed.DO NOT TRUST THE FIRST PERSON WHO CONFESSESThe screen went black."What did it say?" Seraphine asked.Adrian pocketed it. "Someone gave my father to the Ash Covenant.""Who?""I don't know."A laugh came from the doorway. Ravian Kross stood amidst the wreckage, blood tricking from a gash on the side of his temple - looking far too pleased with himself."You still don't understand what you've woke up.""R
CHAPTER 6
"Adrian…"The voice filtered out from the broken floor, low and familiar and devoured the rest of the sounds in the room. The cracking stone, the yelling, even Ravian's breaths.Adrian stopped in place.Twenty six years of his life, she had been a ghost. Something he sometimes smelled in the air. A hand brushing his forehead in dreams he could barely remember upon waking. Now she was calling him."Mom?"Adrian took a step towards the opening before Seraphine gripped his arm."Adrian, wait."He wrenched himself free. The marble beneath him trembled and another portion of the floor gave way, revealing a drop of golden light. A thick heat rolled from the darkness below."She's down there."Nyxara blocked his path. "No.""You told me she was dead.""I told you that the records said she was dead."His eyes narrowed. "You knew."Nyxara said nothing."How much?"Nyxara shook her head. "Not enough."Adrian chuckled mirthlessly. "Seems to be the answer everyone's giving me tonight."Ravian rai
CHAPTER 7
A child's voice echoed through the darkness"Mother..."Adrian halted mid-step."If you love me…" A pause. "Make me forget."Pain knotted tight in his chest.Seraphine was watching the empty corridor. "That was you.""I knew the fear, not the voice."The elevator lights dimmed and brightened, revealing a small figure just past the doors that vanished the moment Adrian's vision cleared.Seraphine's fingers curled around his arm. "Don't follow.""I want to know what happened to me.""And what you're seeing now isn't real?""It could not have revealed itself to me if that were the case."The woman shook her head. "That is how traps work."She should not have been correct, but Adrian was reacting on instinct rather than reason and the voice in his head had cracked open a memory not his own but still his. Without looking back, he stepped into the corridor and the world shifted around him.A woman's arms wrapped around a small child, her tangled hair streaked with sweat, her eyes puffy with
