chapter 31
The dragon on the wall is smiling.Adrian doesn't move. Nor does Seraphine. The shadow on the stone behind her rises up, horns curling in the air, wings stretching to swallow the ceiling. Her mother stands, immobile, beside it. Only the shadow in the room is shifting."Seraphine," Adrian murmurs, "don't turn around.""Why not?""Just don't."Vaelrics hand drifts toward the blade at his hip."Don't," Adrian said, "if that thing wants us dead, we're dead."The shadow tilts its head back. It speaks inside Adrian's skull, a voice familiar to him, and not simply because it sounds like his own.You finally noticed.[FOREIGN COGNITIVE SIGNAL DETECTED. SOURCE: UNKNOWN.]Adrian has heard false voices before. The Gate. Future Adrian. This was worse because it was coming from him, not at him"What do you want?"What you want."Answers."Your identity."Then you're wasting your time."The shadow laughsly. Are you sure? The white light in the gate flares. Adrian feels heat in his chest, and for a m

"I've been inside you since the day you were born."The words landed somewhere inside the chamber.Adrian studied the man that stood across the Gate – the same face, the same black hair, the same swirling gold fire inside that skin. Something was wrong, something in the bones of this man was not quite as it should be, and he wasn't sure why.He drew Dragon Sight into his vision. One bloodline signature should have responded. Instead there were three – gold, black, and a third that Dragon sight refused to process.Adrian exhaled slowly, looking back into the man's eyes. "You're not me."The man smiled. "Depends which version of you you are talking to."Seraphine joined them. "Don't answer him."The stranger looked from her to the man's face, and something was crushed out of his features. "You still protect him."Do I know you?""You knew me before you knew him."She stiffened."Seraphine," Adrian noted the shift in her expression. "I don't recall.""Of course you don't," he touched his

The voice of the being beneath Veyrith was gonefor three seconds no one movedThen the youth inside the Gate smiled, not unkindly, merely as if he had heard the truth of long sought after gossip."Did you hear it?"Adrians eyes narrowed on the Dragon Sovereign."Yes.""Who was it meant to replace?"The smile left the youths face as he looked afraid, telling Adrian everything the words could not.Seraphine saw it also, as did Vaelric, only Seraphines mother remained unshakenAdrian turned on Seraphine. "You know"She said nothing"You all know something about the Dragon Sovereign." He advanced on her. "Then we might as well stop playing games." The Gate shuddered as a crack splintered the floor, black energy seeping from the gap like wound smoke.Seraphine shot up her hand. "Adrian.""I see it.""No, Look at the gate."He did. The four rings of gold, silver, black and white had ceased their random spinning, instead orbiting the stranger, though the focus of the rotation was not him bu

The throne was full already with its legs tied together. White streaks of light flooded the chamber, but even with that the throne's outline didn't disappear but instead stood clear. Black stone, with the crown carved in the middle of the back. A broken-off half. And a figure on this throne.Adrian.More weathered, with silver threading his long black hair, the gleam of an eye that had burned gold and the other, black. A hand lay loose on the armrest, and the fingers of the other were curled around a sword not belonging to Adrian.Seraphine's fingers dug hard into his forearm. "That was you."I know," Adrian said."No, that wasn't the Adrian I saw. He was afraid before his death. The older man raised his head and met Seraphine's eyes with a smile curling the edges of his lips - not a king's smile, but one of man who had been covered with dirt and heard shoveling."Run. "That was what the image flashed forward, and it caught in Adrian's chest.A younger image of himself stood in the t

The ground did not shake. It rolled as though something huge and many legged was twisting in its sleep beneath them. Dust fell from the ceiling. The black crack under the Gate grew wider.Adrian took Seraphine's hand"No," said Adrienne, wrenching her arm free. "I'll stand beside you."Neither of them said anything more. There wasn't the time. The golden eyed child screamed"MOVE!"The floor blew open. A black column of energy shot upwards through the stone. Adrian didn't think. He pushed his Dragon Pressure downwards on it, not to crush it, but to twist it aside. The column of energy bent sideways and tore into the empty chamber before themAdrian stumbled. He felt the pain shoot up his arm.[DRAGON PRESSURE — FIELD STABILITY: 7%]7%. He let the power die away. The black light coiled in on itself. Silence fell over the chamber once more."You controlled it," said Ravian."No. I gave it somewhere else to go," said Adrian, wiping blood from his nose.Something shifted in Ravian's expre

The darkness did not fall upon them. It devoured them. For one impossible second Adrian heard nothing, no Gate, no groaning from the stone, nothing at allThen a heartbeat, his ownThen another, not hisHe opened his eyes. The throne was gone. The white crack in the floor was gone. A few steps from him stood the young man who had called himself the original Adrian, blood flowing from his nose, eyes wet, locking eyes with Seraphine beyond Adrian."You remembered", he whispered.Seraphine paled. "Remembered what?""Me."Adrian stepped between them. "What did I do?"For the first time, the fear replaced the anger on the young man's face. "You don't want to know.""I already know someone else erased my memories.""That wasn't the worst part.""Then tell me."The chamber shook, a hairline crack of white light splitting the floor between them, and the System rose from it, not blue, not gold, but white, broken[ORIGINAL IDENTITY RESTORED.]The line flickered then a second appeared beneath it

"Seraphine."Adrian's breath caught in his throat as he felt his pulse. It sounded just like his own, and not the voice of young Adrian, and most definitely not the voice of the scarred man from the vision. This was the sound of him, this sound in his head that he had never told others about.Seraphine walked forward. "Adrian?"Adrian didn't reply to her.The cracks that stretched between his knees seemed to widen, oozing the black light that stretched across the floor.Ravian aimed his weapon at the floor. "Everyone stands.""No," said Adrian, raising a hand and Ravian went quiet. It was not random light escaping from the fissures. This was letters, words formed of pure energy on the floor.S E R A P H I N EAnd beneath his name:__YOU REMEMBERED HIM FIRST.Seraphine breathed heavily. "Who?"ADRIAN.Her mother gripped her shoulder. "Don't answer it."Seraphine yanked herself free. "Why?""Because it knows your voice."Adrian turned to Seraphine. "You knew.""I knew that the Gate was

The lights died.A tense silence stretched for three seconds before Adrian heard the breathing. Seraphine's but wrong. Too slow. Too even like she was feigning fear"Seraphine?"No response as she lunged at him. Her hand shot out and clamped over his wrist crushing the bones. Not her grip."Let go."Her silver eyes flared to life in the darkness before gold then black. A voice spoke from within her."You still don't recognize me."It was not her voice. A young mans voice calm almost amused.Vaelric stepped forward. "Get away from her."The young mans voice laughed. "You always say that."Vaelric froze mid step his expression not one of surprise but of realization.Adrian caught it. "You know him."Vaelric said nothing"Tell him," the young man said through Seraphine."Not here.""Then where?"The lights flickered back to life revealing Seraphine alone her eyes normal her hand sliding away from Adrian's wrist as she turned to regard their expressions. "Why is everyone staring at me?"A

The knock came from inside Seraphine’s chest.Once. Twice. Three times. No one breathed. Adrian waited for the fourth. It did not come. The black line that had gone under Seraphine’s skin stopped above her heart, quivered, and began to retreat.“It’s not entering,” Adrian said.Vaelric’s head snapped towards him. “What?”“The seal isn’t opening. It’s closing.”Seraphine gritted her teeth as the line dragged itself back down her veins. “Something is fighting it.”“You?”“I don’t know.”Seraphine’s mother took a step closer. “Don’t resist. If you force it to close, you will crush whatever is inside.”There was a hush over the room. She said it too quickly, and she knew it.“Whatever is inside.” Seraphine said again. “So there is someone in me.”Silence.“You told me I was a stabilizer.”“You are.”“You told me that my blood matched Adrian’s.”“It does.”“You never told me that I was carrying someone.”“I didn’t know it was a person.” Her mother’s voice thinned. “I thought it was a memor

The laughter below Veyrith stopped.Adrian stood motionless.Kai.The name echoed inside his skull like the ringing of a bell. Not Adrian, not Vale...Kai. A beat of his heart too long, something inside him answered the call. His Dragon Flame stuttered, his pulse quickened. He curled his hand into a fist. "No."A soft word, but enough to halt whatever movement had been coming his way. His fingers flexed. Seraphine shivered in his arms, her silver eyes clear of fog but a dark stripe curled tight around her neck like a wire. her mother was rising, her dark hair tumbling over her shoulders."Put her down.""Why?""Whatever was in her could be using your presence as an anchor," said Adrian's mother.Adrian looked from Seraphine to her mother. "You anticipated this.""I feared it would come.""And you told no one.""I did not know what Vaelric's transfer would bring.""He did what exactly," Adrian asked, his gaze snapping to Vaelric.Vaelric gave a short scoff, but it was more surprised tha
