chapter 41
Seraphine's finger hovered over his chest, her hand trembling and not from fear."I pulled the trigger."Adrian didn't so much as blink, taking in her frightened expression, her shaking hand, the black line just below her throat. Something was wrong. Not with her, but with the memory. He had learned that firsthand in the archive, that memories could twist and turn and lie and his life was a testament to that fact."Tell me what you see.""A white room." Her voice wavered. "A black throne. You are there, wearing black, smiling.""What kind of smile?""What?""Happy? Angry?""No," she frowned. "Afraid.""Then it's not happening," he took a step closer. "No one smiles like that when they're afraid.""They do if they're faking it," the other Adrian said. They all turned to him. He was watching Seraphine with the expression of a man watching a bridge collapse."That's what he taught you.""Who?"He looked at the throne. "Kael."The chamber trembled and on the tablet the clock counted down

The numbers fluctuated.[KAI IDENTITY: 7.4%][ADRIAN VALE IDENTITY: 92.6%]Then shot up.[KAI IDENTITY: 8.1%]Adrian's knees threatened to buckle and Seraphine caught his arm."Adrian.""I'm fine.""You're bleeding."Wiping his nose, he discovered that the blood was not coming from his nose but from something deeper, something embedded in the cavity of his chest, pulsing with a life of its own.We already killed her once.Kael's voice echoed inside Adrian's head.Adrian stiffened."What did you hear?" Seraphine askedAdrian swallowed hard. Instead of the lie that had already formed on his tongue, he reminded himself of the etched tablets.CHOICE IS THE ONLY STABLE CONSTANT."Your name," Adrian said, thinking of the words Kael had said to him before he'd killed the man, "Kael said something about killing you."The silence that followed was heavy.Vaelric's expression shifted. Almost imperceptibly. A tightening around the eyes. A pause in the rhythm of his breathing. Not surprise. Fear.

The chamber stilled.Everyone held their breath. The white hand was gone, and so was the boy with Adrian's face -- only his last, burning words remained in Adrian's skull.Don't let her choose."What choice?" Seraphine asked."I don't know.""You're lying."She didn't sound angry. It was worse."I don't know yet."She studied his face before nodding. "Good. If you knew I'd be frightened.""You shouldn't have played back that recording," Ravian added."I didn't.""It opened for both of you," Ravian said. he gestured at the Orion tablet where the three circles had vanished, replaced by a single word.CHOICE.Underneath it, the wordsCURRENT HOLDER: SERAPHINE STERLING."What does that mean?" Seraphine asked.Ravian remained silent. A pair of rings had separated from the witness seal at his neck -- one to the left and one to the right. One pointed at Adrian, the other at Seraphine."You said that seal tracked Sovereign transfers," Adrian said. "Why is it pointing at her?"Ravian's jaw tig

The Gate remained closedAdrian still saw what looked like a seventeen-year-old version of Seraphine, with a silver blade in her hands and a future version of him behind her. You're remembering the wrong death.Adrian turned to check that Seraphine had not moved. She had gone pale and her hands trembled slightly."You remember something else."Seraphine swallowed. "I don't know if it's a memory.""Just tell me."Seraphine closed her eyes. "I'm holding the blade. You're in front of me." She paused, her voice breaking. "You're smiling."His heart skipped a beat. That didn't make sense."You said something," Seraphine whispered. "'Don't look at me when you do it.'""Do what?""I don't know."The System flickered[MEMORY FRAGMENT DETECTED.][SOURCE: SERAPHINE STERLING.][WARNING: MEMORY HAS BEEN ALTERED.]The words vanished. The tablet went dark, save for a single symbol in silver that took the shape of a blade. Adrian stepped forward."That's no coincidence." Ravian sounded tense. "Last

"I remember who made that choice."Seraphine's voice rang out in the chamber, the Orion tablet glowing between her and Adrian.WITNESS: SERAPHINE STERLING.DESTINATION: ADRIAN VALE.SURVIVAL CONDITION: ONE MUST CHOOSE TO DIE.Adrian's heart pounded against his ribs and something inside him went still."Who?"She kept her eyes on the screen. "I remember the room. I don't remember how it started.""Then tell me the end.""I can't.""You don't have to give me the whole memory." He tapped the tablet. "Just the decision.""Adrian," Ravian began."Leave it out."Ravian stopped talking.Adrian crouched and read the scroll again. One must choose to die, not one will die or one must be killed."Look at the wording," he said. "It doesn't ask for a sacrifice. It asks for a choice."Behind them, Vaelric was already pushing himself upright. His face was gray and he was still shaking off whatever had possessed him. "You're getting closer."Then talk.""The Sovereign can't force anyone's hand. It can

The broken fragment of the Dragon Core floated over the palm of Seraphine's mother.Adrian's blood knew as his mind didn't. The black shard in his chest slamming against his ribs. Once, twice.[DRAVARYN CORE RESONANCE DETECTED.][PRIMARY CORE: UNAVAILABLE.][FRAGMENT: AUTHENTIC.]"Where did you get that?"Seraphine's mother didn't answer. Did not reply. Instead she looked to her daughter without a trace of the hatred or the fear in her eyes, only grief."I tried to destroy it."Seraphine stepped forward."You said the third participant wasn't supposed to survive.""I did.""Who was the third participant?"Silence. In Adrian's gut he did not trust."Don't bother," Vaelric spoke from the floor, voice weak. "She won't tell you.""Than I shall ask a better question." Adrian turned to her. "Who survived."Her fingers wrapped around the fragment. Her eyes for the first time, showed fear."You."Adrian became rigid."That isn't what I meant.""I said it wasn't supposed to survive. I never sai

The words hung in the air.[THE THIRD PARTICIPANT WAS THE FIRST VERSION OF YOU] .[AND HE IS STILL ALIVE]Adrian didn't think he could feel more helpless. The realization of what he'd been hunting for the last six months twisted inside him, turned simple. Adrian was not alone. There was another Adrian, out there, alive."It can't be," Seraphine whispered.Adrian didn't respond. He turned toward her mother. "You suspected it.""I did not," her mother said."You did.""It's not the same," her mother said. "It's not at all the same.""Then where is he?""I don't know," her mother said."Who does?"Her mother's gaze swept over Vaelric, and a slow certainty bloomed inside Adrian's chest.Vaelric was staring at the floor. Adrian turned to face him. Ravian placed a hand near his weapon and took a step closer. "Don't kill him," he said."I'm not going to kill him," Adrian said. "I want him awake."Ravian smiled faintly. "That seems dangerous.""Yes," Adrian said. He knelt in front of Vaelric.

The second heartbeat sounded.ThumpAdrian stiffened. It had not originated in his heart. It had originated in Seraphine. She stood three paces away, a hand pressed against her sternum, her face drained of all color"Seraphine?"She looked up, and for a single, sickening moment, her silver eyes were not their usual shade"I heard it," she whispered.Dragon sight activated before he could stop it. The chamber grew sharper. Silver bloodflowed beneath her skin, and at her heart, the old silversign. But something else pulsed inside the sign. A second heartbeat, not of flesh, but of shape.Thump. SilverThump. Black.Thump. Something in between"Don't move," Adrian warned. Her eyebrow arched. "Orders, now?""When it will keep you on your feet," Adrian said."And if I refuse?""Then refuse while standing."The corner of her mouth twitched, then theheartbeat struck again, and she folded in on herselfAdrian caught her before she struck the floor, her fingers locking around his wrist"Adrian,

I found him.The words echoed inside Adrian's skull. In his mind, there was no beating heart, no sound except his own.The piece the fragment of information had revealed inside his body was not from the System, not even from a memory."Adrian"Seraphine's voice pierced the ringing in his ears. Her normal eyes had returned, but she was trembling from something deeper than fear. Her expression was almost as if she had heard news from the very edges of her mind long awaited but just on the verge of happening."You said my brother," Adrian said, recovering. "Back whenyour eyes were black.""I do not know why I said that.""Then tell me what else you recall."She flinched, but the threat never came."You will not convince me?""No.""And why is that?""Because everyone who forced you to remember the changed what they remembered."Her expression relaxed a fraction and she pulled the silver pendant at her throat. A white room, she said, and two children.Adrian's stomach turned. "Two?"One l

Now let me tell you exactly why the first one had to dieAdrian's own words echoed in the chamber, his lips not movingNo one spoke, the fragment in his chest pulsing once, twice, from inside like a fistAdrian looked down, the black glass shard in his hand warm enough to burn. Fine silver streaks like cracks of ice ran over its surfaceSeraphine took a step towards him"Stay there," he told herShe stopped, she wasn't afraid of him, she was afraid for him, and he could see it clearly. For months he had known that his memories were lies. Now he had to wonder if the man remembering them was one tooAdrian searched for the System, finding nothing, not even a lie"Why are you so quiet?" he muttered"It won't answer," said Subject Three. "The System doesn't know which Adrian is asking."Something in him twisted, a sharp, cold edge. "Then I will find out for myself," he said, slapping the shard onto the Orion tabletThe screen didn't light up blue or white, it went black, and a symbol burn
