Chapter 1 - The Letter from Blackthorn
“You’re fired, Ryan.”Ryan Volde stared at his manager for a few seconds, waiting for an explanation that would somehow make those words sound more reasonable. The man in the gray suit sitting across from him simply slid a thin folder over the desk.“The company is restructuring. Your division is cutting three positions, and since you’re the newest employee, your name ended up on the list.”“So my performance was bad?”“No.”“Did I screw something up?”“Not really.”Ryan pulled the folder toward him and gave a dry smile.“So I did my job well and still got fired. Good to know.”Seven weeks. It wasn’t long enough for him to think of the office as a second home, but it had been long enough to convince him that life was finally starting to go his way after university.Twenty minutes later, Ryan walked out of the building carrying a cardboard box that wasn’t even half full. That night, he did something he rarely ever did.He drank alone.Four glasses of bourbon were enough to take the edg
Chapter 2 - Blackthorn Arcane Academy
When Ryan opened his eyes again, the first thing he noticed was that the bourbon was gone from his system.Completely.His head felt clear. His vision was sharp.Even the bitter taste of alcohol had disappeared from his tongue as though he hadn’t drunk anything at all.Ryan rubbed a hand across his face.“I’m actually sober?”“Open the door!”The shout came from the far side of the room.Ryan turned toward it—And finally noticed where he was.He was standing inside an enormous stone hall surrounded by more than a hundred strangers. Some were still dressed in office clothes.A few were wearing pajamas.Almost everyone looked either confused or terrified.A muscular man near the far end of the hall was pounding on a massive wooden door.“Whoever you are, open this door right now!”Others quickly joined him, shouting demands of their own. Some tried calling the police, but none of their phones had a signal.Ryan checked his.Same problem.Stranger still, the digital clock on his screen
Chapter 3 - The Worst in Group Seven
Gareth didn’t speak right away when the golden writing on the parchment finally stopped changing. He read the result once. Then he read it again, as though the numbers might somehow change if he looked closely enough.Ryan, still standing in front of the Mirror of Appraisal, finally asked, “Is there a problem?”“There is.”Gareth raised the parchment slightly.“The problem is, I was starting to think the examination was taking so long because the mirror had found something unusual about you. Turns out it just needed extra time to make sure the result was actually this bad.”Several candidates burst out laughing.Ryan forced down his irritation.“How bad are we talking?”“Strength, two. Agility, two. Intelligence, two. Vitality, three. Nine attribute points in total.”Gareth read out the numbers without making the slightest effort to soften the blow.Ryan didn’t know what Blackthorn considered average yet, but the reactions around him told him enough. Most of the candidates tested befo
Chapter 4 - SS-Rank Talent
Gareth looked at her with a hint of approval.“Now that’s a much more useful question. The answer is yes. Potions, rituals, contracts, physical enhancement, and certain types of magic can extend a person’s lifespan. Those who reach a high enough level of power can even live far beyond the limits of ordinary humans.”The mood in the hall shifted. The fear was still there, but the idea of gaining additional years of life was difficult to ignore.Evelyn raised another question.“What about the Academy Credits and Merit Marks listed in our profiles?”“Credits are tied to your academic progress and graduation requirements. Merit Marks are Blackthorn’s primary currency.”Gareth paused briefly before continuing.“Weapons, artifacts, potions, magical materials, training facilities, even ordinary money from the outside world can be obtained as long as you have enough Merit Marks.”Ryan fell silent.A few hours ago, his biggest problem had been losing his job. Now, a mysterious academy was offe
Chapter 5 - Weapon Selection
“Don’t push!”Ryan Volde had barely opened his eyes when someone slammed into his shoulder from behind. He stumbled into a broken wooden desk while dozens of other candidates crowded together inside what looked like an abandoned lecture room.No one had time to make sense of their surroundings before Blackthorn’s voice sounded simultaneously inside their heads.[Blackthorn Entrance Examination has begun.][Mandatory Mission: Reach the Sanctuary Zone within 60 minutes.][The examination grounds are currently occupied by Blight Goblins. Leave the main building and reach the Sanctuary Zone to complete the mission.][Optional Mission I: Kill at least 5 Blight Goblins.][Optional Mission II: Kill the Goblin Warlord.][Mandatory Mission Reward: 10 Academy Credits and 100 Merit Marks.][Optional Mission I Reward: Additional 10 Academy Credits and 200 Merit Marks.][Optional Mission II Reward: Additional 20 Academy Credits and 500 Merit Marks.][Failure during the entrance examination will no
Chapter 6 - Entrance Examination
A vast courtyard stretched outside.Hundreds of short creatures with grayish-green skin wandered across it.Their bodies were thin and hunched, with some wearing strips of rotting leather as makeshift armor.Dull red eyes and rows of sharp teeth made them far more disturbing than the goblins Ryan remembered from storybooks. At the far side of the courtyard, golden light formed a massive gateway. The Sanctuary Zone.Several candidates were already running toward it.Their mistake became obvious almost immediately. The moment the first group entered the courtyard, dozens of Blight Goblins that had been wandering aimlessly turned at the same time. The creatures were slow. But there were so many of them that the first group was surrounded within moments.A candidate screamed as his arm was torn open.Another fell after something bit into his leg.Seconds later, a swarm of goblins piled onto him.His body disappeared into fragments of light.Ryan knew they couldn’t truly die during this ex
Chapter 7 - Forming The Group
“Panic.”Evelyn’s answer made Ryan stop playing with the dagger in his hand. She was still standing near the window, watching the courtyard full of Blight Goblins as though she were observing an experiment rather than dozens of people struggling to stay alive.“Blackthorn didn’t make this exam physically overwhelming,” Evelyn continued. “The Blight Goblins are slow, their attacks are easy to read, and most of the candidates have higher attributes than you. The real problem is that none of us are used to seeing creatures like that charging at us.”Ryan decided to ignore the last part, which once again reminded him of his miserable attributes. He walked over to the window and saw several candidates trying to fire arrows from a distance.Out of six shots, only one hit a goblin. The rest struck the ground or flew off somewhere useless. One of the wand users wasn’t doing much better. His Arcane Bolt curved too far to the side and nearly struck another candidate.Ryan finally understood.“S
Chapter 8 - Forming The Group (II)
A young woman hesitantly raised her hand.“I’m not going. There’s no penalty for failing the entrance exam, right? I’d rather wait here until time runs out.”Several others immediately agreed.Their fear was understandable. They had already watched dozens of candidates get torn apart alive.Knowing that death during this exam wouldn’t reduce their lifespan didn’t make the pain any less real.Ryan counted quickly.Out of twenty-six people, fourteen chose to stay inside the building. That left twelve.Marcus tapped the hilt of his sword confidently.“Twelve is enough. With my thirty-two attribute points and Evelyn being the strongest candidate here, ordinary Blight Goblins won’t be a problem.”Evelyn turned toward him.“The mandatory mission and killing five Blight Goblins shouldn’t be too difficult. The unknown factor is the Goblin Warlord.”Marcus frowned.“I haven’t even seen the Warlord. Maybe it’s somewhere else.”“No.”Ryan looked toward the courtyard.“If the mission target hasn’
Chapter 9 - First Skill
“How much longer are you going to make everyone wait?”Marcus Hale stared at Ryan impatiently, tapping the flat of his sword against his boot.“A few minutes of practice won’t change anything. If your physical condition was bad from the start, you should just accept it.”Ryan ignored him and swung the dagger again. The movement felt much cleaner than when he had first started practicing, and the notification he had been waiting for finally appeared.[Basic Dagger Mastery Lv.1: 96/100.]Marcus snorted.“I got thirty-two attribute points because I trained every day before coming here. You can’t make up that kind of difference in half an hour.”“You’ve mentioned thirty-two several times already,” one of the group members said. “We still remember.”A few people laughed.Marcus’s expression hardened slightly. He was about to respond when Evelyn spoke calmly.“High attributes are an advantage, but Blight Goblins have low attack and defense. A difference of a few points matters less than mai
Chapter 10 - First Kill
Ryan ran with them for several meters before realizing something was wrong. The Blight Goblins that had been shambling slowly moments earlier suddenly picked up speed.More of them also began turning toward the group.“Stop running!” Ryan shouted. “Slow down!”Marcus stopped and turned around, clearly annoyed.“What’s your problem now?”“You’re pulling more goblins toward us.”Ryan pointed across the courtyard.“Watch their speed. When we walk, they move slowly. The moment we run, they speed up too.”Marcus gave a short laugh.“You want everyone to stop because of a guess?”“He’s right,” Evelyn cut in.Her wand was already raised in Marcus’s direction, though she hadn’t cast anything.“Blight Goblins were designed with low mobility. If candidates could simply run while the goblins remained slow, most people could circle around them and this exam would be meaningless.”She looked toward the creatures surrounding them.“Blackthorn made their speed adjust to our actions.”Several members
