One Hour
The ground split open beneath Ethan's feet. He jumped backward and pulled Mary with him as a deep crack tore across the street, sending pieces of broken concrete flying into the air. The survivors around them screamed and scattered in every direction.Ethan looked up. The massive shadow above the clouds was moving, and for several seconds nobody understood what they were seeing. Then something enormous pushed through the dark clouds, and Ethan's body went cold. This was not a monster like the Shadow Eaters. This thing was far larger. Only part of its body was visible, but Ethan could make out what looked like a huge black hand pressing against the clouds, a hand larger than several buildings put together.Victor slowly lowered his weapon. "We need to leave."Ethan looked at him. "What is that?"Victor didn't answer right away. His face had gone pale. "I don't know."Claire stepped closer to Ethan. "You said the System warned you about an unknown entity."Ethan nodded, and the blue scr
The Seeker’s Mark
Ethan ran directly toward the creature, and everything around him seemed to slow. The Seeker's avatar stood behind Mary, its dark body almost blending into the smoke that covered the street, its long arm already reaching toward her. Ethan didn't think. He acted, pushing himself forward with everything he had and swinging the Beginner Blade. The blade struck the creature's arm, and a violent force exploded between them. Ethan was thrown backward, but the creature staggered as well, and for the first time he saw something unexpected. The blade had actually wounded it. A thin line of black liquid ran down its arm.Ethan stared at it as the System immediately appeared. ATTACK EFFECT CONFIRMED. BEGINNER BLADE CAN DAMAGE SEEKER AVATAR. His breathing grew heavier. So it could be hurt. That alone was enough."Ethan!" Mary rushed toward him."Stay back!" he shouted. The creature turned toward him, its eyes glowing brighter. "You should not have this weapon."Ethan's expression hardened. "You t
The Race To The Safe Zone
Ethan ran through the burning street with Mary beside him as the timer continued counting down. 00:38:56. Three kilometers separated them from the Safe Zone, but the distance meant nothing compared to what stood behind them. The Seeker's avatar was following, and Ethan couldn't hear its footsteps, which frightened him more than anything else that night. A creature that powerful should have made the ground shake with every step, yet it moved through the city almost silently.Claire ran beside Ethan. "Do you still feel it?"He glanced behind him. "No."Victor looked at him. "That is worse."Ethan understood what he meant. If his Danger Sense couldn't detect the creature, then the Seeker was either moving beyond its range or deliberately hiding from it, and neither possibility offered any comfort. They reached an intersection where three roads stretched ahead of them. The main road was filled with Shadow Eaters, the road on the left was blocked by overturned buses, and the road on the ri
The Door Beneath Blackridge
Ethan stood frozen in the middle of the street. The System message remained in front of him: PLAYER ZERO REQUIRED TO OPEN THE SEALED STRUCTURE. The words made his stomach tighten. He looked toward the Safe Zone in the distance. The tall walls were visible through the smoke, surrounded by hundreds of fleeing survivors, while searchlights swept across the streets and armed guards stood along the gates. It should have looked like safety, but instead Ethan could not stop thinking about Mary's words. The door beneath Blackridge."What is underneath the Safe Zone?" Ethan asked.Mary did not answer immediately, and Ethan turned toward her. "Mom."Mary lowered her eyes. "I don't know everything.""You know enough.""I know that the facility was not the only place they built."Ethan's expression hardened. "What does that mean?"Mary looked toward the Safe Zone. "There was another structure beneath the city. Your father knew about it."Ethan went completely still. His father was a subject he ra
My Father’s Voice
Ethan could not breathe. The voice beneath the Safe Zone had called him by his name. Not Player Zero. Not Subject Zero. Ethan. Then it had called him something even more impossible: my son.His eyes remained fixed on the cracked ground."Dad?" The word came out barely louder than a whisper.Mary stepped toward him. "Ethan," she began, but he turned to her before she could say more."You knew," he said. "You knew he was alive?"Mary's face tightened with pain. "I don't know if he is alive.""Then who is speaking?""I don't know."Ethan shook his head. "No more lies."The ground shook again, and several guards fell as cracks spread across the floor of the Safe Zone. People screamed and rushed away from the center. Victor grabbed Ethan's shoulder and told him they needed to move, but Ethan pushed his hand away."I need to know," he said."Knowing will not keep you alive," Victor warned."Neither will running forever."A deep vibration passed beneath them, and then the voice returned. "Et
The First System
The metal door continued opening. A deep mechanical sound rolled through the underground chamber, shaking dust from the ceiling. Ethan stood at the top of the staircase, staring into the darkness beyond the door. His father had told him not to come down. The System had ordered him to. For the first time, Ethan understood that the System and his father might want completely different things, and that thought made him uneasy."Ethan," Mary's voice came from behind him.He turned. She stood beside Claire and Victor, her face wet with tears, though she was no longer trying to stop him."I am coming with you," she said.Ethan shook his head. "No. Stay here.""I have spent twenty years keeping secrets from you. I am not letting you face them alone."Ethan wanted to argue, but then he saw the determination in her eyes and nodded. "Stay close."Victor checked his weapon. "I do not like underground facilities."Claire looked at him. "You knew this place existed?""No." Victor looked at Ethan.
The choice
Ethan stood completely still, three pairs of glowing eyes watching him from the darkness. He could hear the low breathing of the creatures surrounding them, but his attention remained fixed on the System screen, where three choices blinked before him: Access Original Core. Reject Original Core. Destroy Original Core. One decision, and yet Ethan had never felt less certain about what to do. "Dad," he called toward the dead screen, but there was no answer. "Dad!" Only static filled the chamber. Mary stepped beside him. "Ethan, we need to leave." He looked at her. "You heard him. The original System was created to protect humanity." "I heard him." "And the Seeker wants me to stay away from it." "Yes." Ethan looked back at the darkness. "That means the core matters." Victor raised his weapon. "Or it means the Seeker knows you are being manipulated." Ethan frowned. "You think the System is manipulating me?" "I think we do not know enough to trust either side." Claire slowly stoo
Seventy Two Hours
Ethan stared at the image above the chamber. Hundreds of enormous shapes were moving through space, coming toward Earth. The System's message remained visible: VOIDBORN INVASION DETECTED. ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 72 HOURS. For several seconds, nobody spoke. The only sound was the distant alarm coming from the Safe Zone above them. Ethan finally broke the silence. "Seventy two hours." Daniel's voice came through the speakers. "Yes." "That is how long we have?" "If the System's calculation is correct." Ethan looked at the enormous shapes. "What happens when they arrive?" Daniel was silent, and Ethan's voice became sharper. "Dad." "They will not come to negotiate." Claire stepped closer to the projection. "How many?" "We do not know." Victor looked at Ethan. "And you said the System was created to prepare humanity." "That was the original purpose," Daniel answered. "Then why did the apocalypse start already?" Daniel's voice became strained. "Because someone activated the corrupted
The First voidborn
"Because the first Voidborn has already landed in Blackridge."Daniel's words remained in my mind as the command center lights flickered above us. For several seconds, nobody moved. Then the entire facility shook.A deep impact rolled through the walls. Dust fell from the ceiling, and somewhere beyond the command center, metal screamed as if something enormous had crashed into the building.Mary grabbed my arm. "Ethan.""I heard it."Another impact followed, this one closer, and the System appeared before my eyes: WORLD THREAT DETECTED. VOIDBORN PRESENCE CONFIRMED. LOCATION: BLACKRIDGE CITY. DISTANCE: 3.8 KM.My stomach tightened. Three point eight kilometers. It was already inside the city.Victor stepped toward the command console. "Can you locate it?""I can try." I placed my hand against the console, and the screen came alive. For the first time, the original Blackridge network spread across the room, hundreds of lines connecting buildings, roads, shelters, power stations, and und
The Thing That Remembered Me
The message remained in front of my eyes. IT REMEMBERS YOU. I could not move. The image from my recovered memory was still fresh in my mind. The dark figure behind the glass, the white eyes, the black mist covering its body. It had been there when I was six. It had seen me before I even understood what fear was."Ethan." Mary's voice brought me back. I looked at her."You knew."She swallowed. "I knew something was in that room.""Something?" My voice became harder. "You told me the facility experimented on me. You told me they were trying to create Players. You never told me that a Voidborn was there.""I was trying to protect you.""You have been protecting me with lies."Mary looked away. For once, she did not argue.Victor stepped between us. "We do not have time for this."The System appeared: DISTANCE TO VOIDBORN: 1.7 KM. ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 18 MINUTES.Claire looked toward the exit. "If that thing reaches the Core, we lose."I tightened my grip around my Beginner Blade. "Then we
