Ethan stared at the image above the chamber. Hundreds of enormous shapes were moving through space, coming toward Earth. The System's message remained visible: VOIDBORN INVASION DETECTED. ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 72 HOURS.

For several seconds, nobody spoke. The only sound was the distant alarm coming from the Safe Zone above them.

Ethan finally broke the silence. "Seventy two hours."

Daniel's voice came through the speakers. "Yes."

"That is how long we have?"

"If the System's calculation is correct."

  • The Void Inside Me

THE PART OF ME THAT LIVES INSIDE YOU.The Voidborn's words kept repeating in my mind. I looked at Mary. She could not meet my eyes."Tell me it is lying."Mary's lips trembled. "I wish I could."The answer hurt more than I expected. I looked down at my hands. Nothing about me looked different. I was still Ethan Cole, still the same man who had struggled to survive the first night of the apocalypse. But something had been placed inside me when I was six. Something from the Void. The System appeared: FOREIGN VOID ENERGY DETECTED. CURRENT CONDITION: DORMANT. THREAT LEVEL: UNKNOWN. RECOMMENDATION: DO NOT ATTEMPT REMOVAL.I stared at the final message. "Why?"The System did not answer. The Voidborn took another step, and black energy spread across the floor. I raised my Beginner Blade. "Stay away from my mother."The creature stopped, its white eyes remaining fixed on me.YOU STILL PROTECT HER."She is my family."SHE STOLE YOU FROM US."You do not own me."For the first time, the Voidborn

  • Why It Wanted Mary

TARGET: MARY COLE.I stared at the System message. For a moment, I could not understand what I was seeing. Then the meaning hit me. The Voidborn had changed its target. It was no longer heading for the Blackridge Core. It was coming for my mother."Why?" Claire asked.I looked at Mary. She had gone completely still."Mom?"Mary did not answer.Victor stepped toward the console. "How far?"The System responded: VOIDBORN DISTANCE: 0.7 KM. ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 11 MINUTES.Victor's expression hardened. "We need to move."I turned to Mary. "What does it want from you?""I don't know.""You do."Her eyes met mine. There was fear in them, but there was something else too. Guilt."You know something," I said.Mary lowered her head. "I know why it remembers me.""Then tell me."She took a slow breath. "When you were six, the scientists wanted to use you to open a connection with the Voidborn."Claire looked shocked. "A connection?"Mary nodded. "They believed Subject Zero could communicate with

  • The Thing That Remembered Me

The message remained in front of my eyes. IT REMEMBERS YOU. I could not move. The image from my recovered memory was still fresh in my mind. The dark figure behind the glass, the white eyes, the black mist covering its body. It had been there when I was six. It had seen me before I even understood what fear was."Ethan." Mary's voice brought me back. I looked at her."You knew."She swallowed. "I knew something was in that room.""Something?" My voice became harder. "You told me the facility experimented on me. You told me they were trying to create Players. You never told me that a Voidborn was there.""I was trying to protect you.""You have been protecting me with lies."Mary looked away. For once, she did not argue.Victor stepped between us. "We do not have time for this."The System appeared: DISTANCE TO VOIDBORN: 1.7 KM. ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 18 MINUTES.Claire looked toward the exit. "If that thing reaches the Core, we lose."I tightened my grip around my Beginner Blade. "Then we

  • The First voidborn

"Because the first Voidborn has already landed in Blackridge."Daniel's words remained in my mind as the command center lights flickered above us. For several seconds, nobody moved. Then the entire facility shook.A deep impact rolled through the walls. Dust fell from the ceiling, and somewhere beyond the command center, metal screamed as if something enormous had crashed into the building.Mary grabbed my arm. "Ethan.""I heard it."Another impact followed, this one closer, and the System appeared before my eyes: WORLD THREAT DETECTED. VOIDBORN PRESENCE CONFIRMED. LOCATION: BLACKRIDGE CITY. DISTANCE: 3.8 KM.My stomach tightened. Three point eight kilometers. It was already inside the city.Victor stepped toward the command console. "Can you locate it?""I can try." I placed my hand against the console, and the screen came alive. For the first time, the original Blackridge network spread across the room, hundreds of lines connecting buildings, roads, shelters, power stations, and und
