Chapter twenty one
Rhys made a quick stop at R&V bar. He hadn’t planned on going there, but the events from minutes ago made him need a drink. The woman behind the counter froze mid-pour when she looked up and saw him.“No way.” She breathed.“Hey, Priya.” Rhys said.Priya set the bottle down slowly. Her eyes swept over him, the suit, the posture, the sheer presence of him now compared to whatever ghost of a man had gone to prison five years ago.“Last I heard, you were still in prison.” She said. “And now you walk in here looking like you own a bank.”“Things changed.” Rhys replied while taking a seat.“No kidding.” She leaned over the bar, studying his face like she was checking for a trick. “You look good, Rhys. Like really good. Prison usually wrecks people. You came out looking like you upgraded.”Rhys laughed softly. “Depends on who you ask.”She laughed back.“Sit. Drinks are on the house tonight.”She bit her lips and exhaled.“I heard what happened with Alisha. How she betrayed you. That sn

The deck hit the table with a snap. Derrick dealt first.Rhys picked up his cards without expression. The first hand went quickly. Derrick overplayed a pair, confidence written all over a face.Rhys folded early. He let him win the hand.“Ouuu. What’s wrong, Rhys? Gotten rusty?” He laughed at Rhys. His men laughed as well. Rhys smiled.“Let’s keep playing.” He said.“Of course. I would never miss an opportunity to humiliate you. And when you’re finally licking my boots, remember it was me who put you in your fucking place!” Derrick dealt again.Rhys played, and destroyed him over the next four games.By the fifth hand, Derrick’s smirk had curdled into something tighter. His boys had gone quiet, the earlier jeering replaced with something cold and shameful. The final hand ended with Rhys laying his cards down in a calm and unhurried way, while looking straught at Derrick. He had won!The bar erupted.“No.” Derrick slammed his cards down. “No, that’s impossible, you cheated.”“Watch t

“Please young master, let me go.” The girl begged. Rhys didn’t move his grip. “Not until you answer the question.” And why was she calling him young master? “Mera.” She said finally. “My name is Mera.” “That’s not an answer.” “It’s a start.” She pulled against his hold, testing it, and when it didn’t budge, she exhaled sharply instead. “I’m not here to hurt you. I’m here to talk.” Something about the certainty in her voice made him loosen his grip, just slightly, enough to let her breathe without letting her run. “Then talk.” “I’m part of an order. Older than any government you’ve ever heard of. We are Mages, hidden in plain sight, pulling strings behind the world your kind thinks it controls.” “My kind?” Rhys asked. “The ones who don’t know what they’re looking at. Which, until recently, included you.” She said. Rhys chuckled. “This is bullshit.” Rhys said, releasing her wrist entirely and stepping back. “A secret order? Only a handful of people possess m

“Hi, Rhys… could you come back here real quick? There’s something I wanna show you.”Anna's voice rang on the other side of the phone. Rhys checked the time. It was past midnight already.“Say in ten minutes time?” She added. He sighed.“I’ll be there.” Rhys replied and hung up. The mansion was dark and quiet by the time Rhys made it back.Anna was waiting for him anyway, curled on the chair in the study with a glass of wine in her hand.“You’re back late.” She said, rising when he entered.“Traffic.”“I bet.” She crossed the room slowly, setting the glass down on the table. The see through nightwear she was wearing caught the glint of the night. Rhys noticed this, but said nothing.“Anna, why am I here?”“You saved me from humiliation tonight.” She said and walked closer to him, close enough now that he could feel the warmth coming off her skin. “You handled Fester. You handled Ken. You also handled Derrick, apparently, if the messages blowing up my phone are any indication.”She

By the time Rhys woke up, Anna was already out.Rhys sighed as he remembered the events of the previous night. A lot had happened. As Rhys was pulling on his jacket, a text jumped into his phone.[Rhys. Please come see me today. It’s important.]: Mom.There was simething quietly alarming in the text. Coupled with the fact that she was hiding something, Rhys’s curiosity peaked. He was halfway to the door when it opened without a knock.Sera Longwater stood in the frame, dressed in a simple green flowery dress. She smiled at him.“Leaving already?” She asked, stepping inside before he could answer, closing the door softly behind her.He fixed his eyes on her.“I have something to attend to.” He replied to her.She smiled again. “Of course.” Sera moved closer. There was something careful and deliberate in the way she crossed the room, the way her fingers found his beard and stroked it gently. What the fuck was happening? “You’ve done so much for this family already. For Anna…”“I was

The door hit the wall hard enough to crack the frame, and three men filed in like they owned the place, boots tracking mud across the carpet.Rhys was on his feet before his mother could even gasp, putting himself between the bed and the doorway.“Where’s Luke?” The lead man barked, scanning the room with the particular impatience of someone who’d done this before and hated wasting time on pleasantries.Luke appeared in the hallway behind them, face draining of color on sight. “I told you, I just need a few more days—”“You said that two weeks ago.” The man snapped. “Fifteen grand, Luke. Fifteen. You think we just forget about that because you’ve got a sick mother and sad eyes?”“Who the hell are you?” Rhys asked, voice flat, already calculating the distance between himself and each of them.“None of your business.” The second man said, cracking his knuckles. “This is between us and him.”“He’s my brother. That makes it my business.”The lead man sized Rhys up, unimpressed. “Then mayb

The estate sat at the end of a quiet, tree-lined road, iron gates swinging open before the car even came to a full stop.Gloria pressed her face to the window like a kid. “Rhys, is this it? Is this where we’re staying?”“Looks like it.” Rhys said, though even he hadn’t fully processed the scale of the place yet, the manicured lawn, the stone fountain out front, the house itself rising two full stories with windows that caught the afternoon light like something out of a magazine.Anna was already waiting on the front steps when they pulled up, arms crossed loosely, a small, satisfied smile on her face.“Well?” She said, as the family spilled out of the car, Luke’s jaw actually dropping, their mother gripping the doorframe of the car for support, overwhelmed.“This is incredible, Anna, but…” Rhys trailed off, doing the math on monthly rent for a place like this, numbers that didn’t make sense for any kind of lease he’d been expecting. “What’s the actual arrangement here?”“There isn’t o

“It’s been weeks.” Adam said, pacing the length of his study, tie loosened, the composure that usually held his face together fraying at the edges. “Weeks, Rhys. Fester’s humiliated, Ken’s gone quiet, and we still don’t know who’s actually pulling the strings behind all of it.”“We’re close.” Rhys said.“You’ve said that before.”“I mean it this time.” Rhys’s jaw tightened. “Whoever’s behind this is patient. Careful. That takes time to unravel.”Adam exhaled, dragging a hand down his face. “I have a board breathing down my neck, shareholders pulling out, and a daughter who seems to think marrying into whatever you are solves all our problems. I need results, Rhys. Not patience.”Before Rhys could answer, a soft knock interrupted them.A servant entered, tray balanced carefully, a single cup of tea steaming atop it, the Longwater family china catching the afternoon light.“Your tea, sir.” She said, setting it down in front of Adam with practiced smoothness.Adam reached for it automati

By morning, the study had been scrubbed clean of blood. Rhys sat across from the head of Longwater security, a tired, thorough man named Okafor who’d clearly been awake all night going through files. “Her name was Delia Marsh.” Okafor said, sliding a folder across the table. “Hired fourteen months ago. References checked out. Background clean. On paper, she was nobody.” “And off paper?” “Off paper, we found this.” Okafor pulled a small burner phone from an evidence bag, the screen cracked but intact. “Wiped clean, mostly. Except for one number she called twice in the last week. Both times after midnight.” “Did you trace it?” “Dead end. Prepaid, untraceable, purchased in cash.” Okafor rubbed his eyes. Rhys could see he was tired. “Whoever’s behind this isn’t sloppy, sir. They vetted an employee for over a year just to get one shot at Mr Longwater. That’s not improvisation. That’s a carefully planned attack.” Rhys turned the phone over in his hands, something cold settlin

Rhys immediately placed his hand over the wound. Anna gasped and cried as blood kept pouring out of her chest. “Rhys… please… it hurts…” “You’ll be fine.” He said calmly as black smoke picked out of his hands. They seeped into the wound, closing it from within as the bullet slowly got pushed out. “Rhys! Behind you!” Anna screamed. Rhys caught the glint of the scope and caught the bullet Reyes fired. Both Anna and Reyes were shocked. How did he do that? Reyes quickly packed his riffle and hurled off the fence. Rhys, seeing the bleeding has reduced, dashed after Reyes. He pushed deeper into the treeline, scanning for footprints, broken branches, any trace at all, but Reyes seemed to have vanished like smoke. He was still searching when a voice spoke from behind him. “Looking for someone?” Rhys spun, fists already raised, and found Mera standing there, a man slung unconscious over her shoulder like he weighed nothing at all. The rifle Reyes had been carrying dangled from
