“Get him down!” Warden Pratt screamed.

His bleeding gums painted his teeth red. Blood spilled from the corners of his mouth.

“Get him down NOW!”

Six guards lunged. Riot batons at hand. And still, the new inmate tore through them like they were made of paper.

“This prison is mine now! You are all dirt!”

Blackgate Federal Prison had a reputation. Men who walked through its gates walked out broken, reformed, or they didn’t walk out at all.

But the new inmate wasn’t impressed. He grabbed a warden and slammed him on the ground.

Bones crunched. Flesh ripped. The piercing scream tore through Cell Block D.

“You call this a prison?” the inmate said, his voice almost bored.

“I’ve put down guard dogs with more fight than you.”

A second warden lunged. The inmate caught his jaw with an elbow and felt it shatter under the impact.

“Pathetic. All of you. Pathetic!”

Warden Pratt backed toward the radio on his belt, hand shaking too hard to find the button.

“This is Cell Block D, we need immediate backup, we need… oh God… I repeat, immediate-“

The inmate grabbed him. Crushed the radio in his hand and raised Pratt off the ground.

“Three top prisons before Blackgate could not hold me.” His grip tightened around Pratt’s neck, choking him.

“I’m the king of this fucking prison now! You’re all my bitch! ” He yelled and slammed Pratt on a cell door.

The door buzzed.

And then opened.

Silence fell on the entire block.

Every man, even those who’d been howling and banging on the bars for a better view, retreated into their cells.

Because everyone knew cell 32 didn’t just open for frivolity. Not without purpose.

“Why do insects make the loudest noise?”

A voice said from the dark cell.

Then a figure stepped out, rubbing the back of his neck with the weary irritation of a man who’d just been woken up for something stupid.

He looked twenty-four, maybe twenty-five.

“You have got to be kidding me,” Rhys muttered, glancing at the wreckage of wardens scattered across the floor.

“It’s my last day here. And you people can’t handle a single new intake without me?”

But then, the inmate looked at him and laughed. Amused by the lad’s audacity.

“Is this a joke? This…” He gestured at Rhys.

“…thing is what they send? Some baby-faced little bitch who still needs his mommy to cut his steak? They ran out of real men, I see, so they scraped the bottom of the barrel and found you.”

The young man didn’t answer. He just checked his watch, like he needed to be somewhere that instant.

“You know what they call me?” The inmate rolled his neck, cracked his bloodied knuckles, grinning now, wide and rotten.

“They call me the Reaper. One hundred and ninety nine confirmed kills. ” He jabbed a thick finger into the young man’s chest.

“And you? you’re gonna be number two hundred. I’m gonna cave your pretty little skull in and prop this gate open with what’s left of it, so every last one of these rats remembers what happens when they send a child to do a man’s job.”

“Fuck. I really do need to teach you a lesson now.”

Rhys said lazily.

The inmate blinked twice. His anger surged immediately.

“You little piece of shit—“

The inmate threw a punch. Rhys caught the hand, barely thinking about it.

The inmate tried to move it, but his hand was frozen in place. He strained, and threw the other punch.

Rhys caught it as well.

“That’s a rude way…” Rhys said slowly, “…to greet someone on his way out.”

Then he twisted.

The bones ripped at the elbow!

The Halverson building had never looked like this before. Floodlights swept up the glass facade in slow, deliberate arcs, turning the entire tower into something closer to a lit monument than an office building. A red carpet unspooled from the curb all the way to the revolving doors, flanked on either side by security dressed sharp enough to pass for guests themselves.Cars rolled up in a steady, glittering procession, each one disgorging guests dressed like they’d raided the vaults of old money and new power alike. Cameras flashed from a roped-off press line, reporters shouting questions nobody bothered answering, all of them hungry for a first real look at the company that had quietly owned half the city for decades without anyone noticing.“I didn’t know they had this much money.” Someone murmured near the entrance, awestruck, watching a string quartet set up beneath a chandelier the size of a small car. “I thought Halverson was just, I don’t know. Infrastructure. Boring stuff.”“A

The photos loaded one at a time, each one landing like a separate blow. Rhys holding a door open for a stranger. That same woman laughing at something he’d said, her hand resting against his arm like she’d done it a hundred times before. His palm settling low against her back as they crossed the street together, easy, familiar, nothing hesitant about it at all. Anna sat frozen on her bed, phone trembling slightly in her grip, something cracking open in her chest that she didn’t have a name for yet. She called Alisha back before she’d even finished processing what she was looking at. “Who is she.” Anna’s voice came out thin, stripped of its usual composure. “I was hoping you wouldn’t ask me that.” Alisha said, letting the pause stretch just long enough to feel reluctant. “I didn’t want to be the one to tell you.” “You’re the one who sent the photos.” “Because I care about you, Anna. More than you probably realize, given everything that’s happened between our families.” A pause,

“We weren’t invited.” Alisha said it like the words tasted bad, pacing her mother’s living room with her phone clutched so tight her knuckles had gone white. “Every firm that matters in this city got an invitation to the Halverson reveal. Every single one, Mom. Except us.”“That has to be an oversight.” Fiona said, though even she didn’t sound convinced. “Our name should be on every list worth being on. Call them. Demand an explanation.”Alisha was already dialing, pacing harder now, heels clicking sharp against the hardwood. The call connected on the second ring, a receptionist’s voice bright and clipped on the other end.“Halverson Dynamics, Events Division. How can I help you?”“This is Alisha Ferro. I need to know why my firm didn’t receive an invitation to the reveal party. We’ve been business associates with half the companies on your guest list for years.”A pause, the sound of typing, distant and unbothered. “I’m showing no record of your firm being on the proposed guest list,

CHAPTER FIFTYRachel drove in silence for the first few blocks, hands steady on the wheel, eyes flicking toward Rhys in the passenger seat every few seconds like she was still trying to confirm what she’d watched happen back in that interview room.“I’ve seen a lot of things in this job.” She said finally. “Overdoses reversed by paramedics with better timing than luck should allow. A guy once walked away from a car wreck that should have killed him twice over. But I have never, in nine years, watched someone’s hands glow gold while they pulled a man back from a stroke on a precinct floor.”“I told you I’d explain eventually.”“You said that an hour ago. I’m starting to think eventually means never, with you.”“It means when I trust you enough to not have you committing me to a psychiatric hold the second I finish the sentence.” Rhys leaned his head back against the seat, exhaustion finally catching up with him now that the adrenaline had burned off. “Give it time.”“Fine.” Rachel said

“Get him on the stretcher, now.” The lead guard barked, two officers already hauling Luther up by the shoulders, his head lolling at an angle that made Rachel’s jaw tighten from across the room.“Wait.” Rhys said, pushing forward. “I can save him.”The guard, a heavyset man with a nameplate reading GRIEVE and an expression that suggested he’d heard every kind of nonsense a precinct could produce, turned to look at him like he’d just announced he could fly.“You can save him.” Grieve repeated flatly. “You. Some ordinary guy with a good face who wandered in off the street twenty minutes ago. Sure. Step aside before you get in the way of people who actually know what they’re doing.”“I’m not asking permission.”“You’re not getting the choice.” Grieve’s hand dropped to his belt, not quite reaching for anything, but close enough to make the threat obvious. “You touch him again and something goes wrong, I will personally see you locked up for interfering with a medical emergency in my own p
