By the time the rest of General Yuwen Zhe's battalion reached the ridge trail, they found their commander waiting to meet them with orders considerably different from the ones he had marched out under that morning."The target has fled deeper into the mountains," Yuwen Zhe announced to his assembled officers, his voice carrying the same flat, authoritative calm it always had, betraying nothing of the conversation that had actually taken place at the trail's narrow center. "We will return to base camp and reassess pursuit strategy. I want the vanguard's injuries treated immediately, and I want no exaggerated reports reaching the Chancellor about what actually transpired here today. Am I understood?"The officers, still visibly shaken by their vanguard's swift and thorough defeat, offered no argument to an explanation considerably kinder to their own competence than the truth would have been.Watching from a concealed vantage point higher on the ridge, Su Yan allowed herse

For a long moment, no one in the small private room spoke at all, the tea's rising steam curling undisturbed between two people who represented, in their own separate ways, the two halves of an empire's most carefully guarded secret."You knew we were coming," Ren Xiao said finally. "Before we ever reached this tea house.""I suspected," Yun Zhao said, resuming her seat and gesturing for the others to do the same, though her eyes remained fixed on Ren Xiao with an intensity that suggested she was still, even now, testing every detail of his appearance against whatever image she'd formed of him beforehand. "Su Yan's message reached one of my own contacts two days ago, requesting safe passage for loyalists gathering in the capital. I did not know, until this exact moment, that the man those loyalists served would be walking through that door himself, considerably sooner than any timeline I'd been given reason to expect.""You have your own network inside the

Yun Zhao returned to the temple after nightfall, her composed exterior noticeably frayed at its edges, though her report, when she finally delivered it, carried the careful precision of someone determined not to let exhaustion compromise accuracy."The passages remain viable," she said, settling heavily into the small circle their group had formed around a single shielded lamp. "Barely. The Chancellor has doubled the guard presence around the holding block since this morning's announcement, but the servant corridors themselves haven't been specifically reinforced, likely because he doesn't believe anyone outside the palace's own staff knows they exist at all.""How many guards, specifically," Yuwen Zhe asked."Six stationed directly outside the holding cell itself, rotating in shifts of three," Yun Zhao said. "Additional patrols throughout the surrounding corridors, though those follow a predictable enough pattern that timing our approach around them

The Chancellor's guards surged forward as one, and the narrow holding block corridor erupted into chaos.Ren Xiao moved to meet the first wave with the same calibrated precision that had cleared a battalion's vanguard on a mountain trail, but the arithmetic here proved considerably less forgiving — twenty-five trained household soldiers in a confined space left far less room for the kind of decisive, minimal-casualty efficiency he'd managed against the general's men. He fought now with harder, more committed strikes, disarming where he could but no longer able to guarantee, with certainty, that every blow landed without lasting consequence.Beside him, Fen Chao and the remaining loyalists fought with the grim, practiced discipline of soldiers who had waited eleven years for exactly this kind of confrontation, while Mei Lian moved through the chaos with a fierce, focused competence that had grown considerably since the calibration stone's first flicker of light, her

They reached the ancestral temple's outer grounds with the sky still fully dark, Yuwen Zhe's soldiers securing the corridor behind them while the smaller extraction party pressed forward toward the vault Yun Zhao had identified, every one of them acutely aware that dawn, and with it the wedding's immovable ceremonial clock, was drawing steadily closer."The vault entrance lies beneath the temple's central shrine," Yun Zhao said, leading them through grounds considerably more heavily watched than the tea house's quiet district had been, "accessible through a stairway normally sealed to anyone outside the imperial family's immediate household. I have the key. I am considerably less certain it still works, given everything else the Chancellor's household seems to have anticipated tonight.""Then we find out quickly," Ren Xiao said, his newfound strength still recovering unevenly from the binding seal's cracked but not fully broken suppression, this borrowed body carry
