CHAPTER 41 - HE CHOSE THIS
“I saw you there,” Kael said. The woman wiped one black tear from her cheek. “You did.” “You told me to run.” “I did.” “Why?” Her eyes moved to Seraphina. “Because she had begun to remember.” Seraphina's expression hardened. “Remember what?” The woman looked at her for a long moment. “Everything you asked him to forget.” Kael's gaze shifted between them. “What did she ask me to forget?” Neither woman answered. The palace groaned. Dust fell from the ceiling. Then a voice came from somewhere beyond the walls. “Enough.” CHAPTER 41 — HE CHOSE THIS The mountain came down around them. Kael felt Seraphina's fingers tighten around his. “Run!” They ran. Behind them, stone screamed against stone. The chamber collapsed in sections, each impact sending a violent tremor through the floor. Dust filled Kael's lungs. Something struck his shoulder hard enough to spin him sideways. He caught himself against the wall. “Kael!” “I’m fine.” Seraphina reached him. Blood ran fro
CHAPTER 42 - THE CONTRACT BEFORE BIRTH
The sentence vanished from the black book.Kael kept staring at the empty page. His thumb moved across the paper.Nothing.No hidden writing. No symbols. No ancient language.Just blankness. Then the book shut itself.A soft click.Seraphina looked toward the horizon.“Something's coming.”Kael followed her gaze. The clouds were moving against the wind. Not being blown.Retreating.The darkness above the mountains folded inward until a perfect circle of clear sky remained.A single white feather drifted through it.Then another. Then hundreds. They fell without touching the ground.Every feather stopped several inches above the earth.Kael's eyes narrowed.“Angels.”Seraphina shook her head.“No.”One of the feathers touched the ground. It turned black. Then dissolved.Another struck a broken stone. The stone became transparent.Kael stepped backward.“That's not angelic.”“No.”Seraphina drew her blade.“It isn't celestial either.”The remaining feathers began spinning.A figure appe
CHAPTER 43 — THE SEVEN SEALS
The mountain rose.Kael felt the ground disappear beneath his boots. For one impossible moment, the entire peak hung in the sky.Broken trees.Chunks of stone.Ancient pillars.Even rivers of soil.Everything lifted around them as though gravity had simply forgotten what it was supposed to do.Seraphina's hand remained locked in his.“Kael.”“I have you.”A stone the size of a house drifted past.Kael pushed it away with one hand.It shattered into dust. The silver-eyed woman stood several meters away, suspended in the air.Her dress moved though there was no wind. She was staring downward.“Something is waking beneath the mountain.”Kael followed her gaze.A darkness had opened below them. Not a hole.A depth. He couldn't see its bottom.Something moved within it.Slowly.Deliberately.Like an enormous creature turning in sleep. Then a heartbeat came from below.BOOM.The entire mountain shook.BOOM.Seraphina's fingers tightened.BOOM.Kael felt the rhythm inside his own chest. His
CHAPTER 44 — THE SECOND SEAL BREAKS
The seven figures stood above the ruined mountain.Kael stared upward. The six ancient forms were impossible to mistake. The God stood wrapped in a mantle of stars. The Archon had six burning wings. The Demon wore black armor beneath a crown of horns. The Dragon's body was covered in dark scales. The Leviathan towered behind them like an ocean given shape. The Draconian stood with silver eyes and a long tail coiled around the broken stone. And in the center stood the human.Kael.Exactly Kael.No crown. No wings. No scales. No flames.Just a man. That frightened him most.Seraphina stepped beside him.“Which one is real?”The human double smiled.“All of us.”Kael's hand tightened around the black ring.“No.”The double tilted his head.“You've spent your entire life trying to decide which version of yourself was real.”“I don't have to decide.”“You already did.”The six ancient beings moved. The air became heavy.Kael's knees nearly buckled. The God lifted one hand. The clouds above
CHAPTER 45 — SERAPHINA’S TRUE IDENTITY
“Kael.”Nothing.Seraphina pressed two fingers against his neck.Nothing.She leaned closer. No breath touched her skin.“No.”Her voice broke. She placed both hands against his chest and pushed.“Come back.”Nothing.She pushed again.“Kael.”The seventh seal burned beneath her palm.“Don't do this.”Still nothing.Around them, the mountain had gone strangely quiet. The ancient armies stood frozen. The dragons had stopped circling.Even the seven Witnesses above the clouds were silent.Seraphina looked down at Kael. His face was peaceful.Too peaceful. She hated it.She struck his chest with her palm.“You promised.”Nothing.Her eyes filled.“You promised me you would let me choose.”A tear fell onto his cheek.“You promised you wouldn't choose my fate for me.”Her voice became a whisper.“So don't choose yours.”Kael didn't move.Seraphina lowered her head. Her forehead touched his.For several seconds, she simply stayed there. Then something inside her answered. Not a voice.A mem
CHAPTER 46 — THE WORLD BEFORE THE BEGINNING
The door opened without a sound. That frightened Kael more than an explosion would have. The last time an ancient door had opened for him, something had always followed.A voice.A memory.A monster.A god. This time there was nothing. No wind.No pressure. No light spilling through the opening.Only darkness.Kael stood before it with Seraphina beside him.Behind them, the mountain remained unnaturally still. The seven ancient aspects that had appeared above the mountain were gone. The armies that had gathered around the battlefield had vanished into the shadows. Even the seven Witnesses had disappeared. It felt as if the entire creation had stepped back.As if it wanted to watch.Seraphina tightened her grip around Kael's hand.“You feel it too?”“Yes.”“What?”Kael stared into the doorway.“Nothing.”She frowned.“Nothing?”“That's the problem.”For the first time since his awakening began, Kael couldn't sense anything beyond the door. Not energy. Not life. Not death. Not time. Not
CHAPTER 47 — THE ANSWER
The sound of his name did not echo.It erased the echo.Kael stood in the collapsing white world, Seraphina's hand locked tightly in his, while the enormous eye stared through them.KAEL ARDENT.Every syllable carried weight. Not the weight of a command.Recognition.The kind that made the bones remember something the mind had forgotten.Kael's knees nearly buckled.Seraphina caught him.“Kael.”He breathed through his teeth.“I heard it.”“Heard what?”“My name.”She looked at the eye.“It shouldn't know your human name.”“That isn't what frightens me.”“What does?”Kael looked at her.“It sounded like it knew me before I became Kael.”The white world shattered completely. There was no falling. No ground. No direction.Kael and Seraphina simply dropped through existence.Seraphina screamed his name.Kael reached for her.Their fingers separated.“Seraphina!”She disappeared into darkness.“KAEL!”Her voice became distant. Then silence.Kael landed on something hard.He opened his eye
CHAPTER 48 — WHAT SHE DID TO HIM
Seraphina did not move.Kael stood beside her, staring through the open doorway. The thing beyond it had her face. Her violet eyes. Her silver hair. Her lips.Even the small scar beneath her left eye that Kael had noticed the first time they met.But Kael knew immediately. It wasn't her.Because Seraphina was standing beside him.And the woman beyond the door was smiling.Seraphina's breathing became shallow.“Kael…”“I know.”“No.”She shook her head.“You don't.”The figure beyond the doorway tilted its head.“Still protecting him?”Seraphina's face hardened.“Who are you?”The figure smiled.“You know.”“I don't.”“You do.”The voice was identical to hers.Yet there was something wrong with it.Too calm.Too old.Too certain.Kael stepped between them.“Don't speak to her.”The figure looked at him. Then laughed.“You still do that.”Kael's eyes narrowed.“What?”“Stand between me and her.”Seraphina grabbed his arm.“Don't.”Kael looked at her.She was trembling. Not from fear of
CHAPTER 49 — THE FIRST QUEEN
The kneeling figures filled the chamber.Millions of them.At least, that was what Kael's mind insisted. There should not have been enough space for so many bodies beneath the mountain.Yet they stood there.Shoulder to shoulder.Silent.Their faces were pale beneath the violet light, their clothes belonging to no single age. Some wore armor. Others wore robes. Some looked human. Others carried horns, wings, scales, tails, or eyes that glowed like dying stars. The First World had not died. Not all of it.They had been waiting.Seraphina stood at the center of them. She looked smaller than the crowd.Yet every being in the chamber was looking at her.Not Kael.Her.Veyr stepped forward.“Your Majesty.”Seraphina didn't answer. Her eyes moved across the faces.A woman with silver markings. An old man with crystal horns.A child holding the hand of a winged creature.A warrior with half his face covered in scales. Then she saw someone she recognized. Her breath caught.“No.”Kael looked
CHAPTER 50 — BEFORE KAEL
The mountain split with a sound like the sky being torn in half.Kael caught Seraphina before she fell.“Stay with me.”Her body trembled against his.Her eyes remained white. Not glowing. Not shining.White.Empty of pupils.Yet when she looked at him, Kael felt something ancient move behind them.Something that remembered him.Something that had known him before he had a name. The First World survivors scattered.Dragons launched themselves into the air.Angels spread their wings.Demons raised weapons.Veyr didn't move.He simply stared at the crack beneath them. His silver eyes had lost their confidence.“Everyone,” he whispered. No one heard him.He said it louder.“Everyone, get away from the mountain.”Seraphina's mother looked at him.“Why?”Veyr pointed downward.“Because that isn't the First World.”Kael looked into the crack.Darkness stared back. Then—something breathed. The entire mountain inhaled.Kael felt the movement through his bones.Seraphina suddenly grabbed his
