Chapter 61 : Laura the maid
Andrew’s eyes peeled open. Someone was knocking at his car window. That someone had woken him from a quick nap he’d taken just a moment after he pulled into the massive car park foreshadowing the big shopping complex where he’d been informed Laura, a former maid of his ex-in-laws, now worked after resigning from the Nelsons’ barely a month ago. Andrew wiped his face and turned to the window. The person who had just woken him was a security guard in uniform. Andrew wound down the car window just enough to enable him to hear what the security guard had to say and also to enable the security guard to see and hear him. “Good day, sir,” the security guard said, peering into the car through the gap. “Are you alright?” Andrew gave him a curt nod. “Do you need something?” the security guard asked. Andrew moved his head as though he were giving the question some thought, then shook his head dismissively. The security guard peered one more time, nodded quietly, and walked away. He must
Chapter 62
The new maid at the Nelsons’ made scrambled eggs and waffles for breakfast. For Mr. Nelson, she brewed black coffee, and for Mrs. Nelson, she made her favourite chocolate drink. She served the meal carefully on the dining table, ensuring the coffee pot was set at Mr. Nelson’s favourite spot and the chocolate drink were set at Mrs. Nelson’s. Then, she wobbled to their room to announce that breakfast was ready, but she nearly bumped into Mr. Nelson, who was already on his way to the dining room, followed by Mrs. Nelson, who was making a call.“Good morning, Mr. Nelson,” the maid said, stepping aside and bowing her head lightly.Mr. Nelson shot her a glance and strutted on, while Mrs. Nelson stopped with the phone held to her left ear.“Hey,” Mrs. Nelson said to the new maid. “I believe you followed the meal schedule drafted by your predecessor.”The maid nodded without uttering a word.Mrs. Nelson pressed her lips together and proceeded to the table, letting the person at the other end

Andrew heaved a sigh in his car as he watched the police vans take off with Mr. and Mrs. Nelson being whisked to the police station for manslaughter and other crimes tied to their offence. Next to him sat a police detective who had followed him from the station after the maid’s confession and every other piece of evidence Andrew had tabled at the police desk. The detective was firmly in his late thirties. Dressed in a white shirt tucked into grey trousers, one wouldn’t have to look twice to tell he was from the police because he wore his badge over his chest like a medal. They waited in silence until the vans pulled out, then spent another long stretch of silence watching a maid come out of the house with her luggage, heading for the road. Andrew hadn’t seen the maid before, so, without being told, he knew she was newly employed, perhaps as a replacement for the previous maid, who was already in police custody, getting ready to testify against her boss in court when the time came.“Th

The sudden buzz of Andrew’s phone woke him quite early in the morning. He had spent the night in his living room after getting home the previous evening so exhausted that he could barely walk past the sofa. He had managed to take off his shirt and loosen his belt to allow himself some comfort. His hands groped around in search of the phone buzzing on the floor, completely missing it until he finally caught hold of it. He sat up quickly as he glanced at the screen and saw Alex’s name on it.He clicked the green icon and placed the phone against his left ear, as he always did, then his voice rattled through the calm of the early morning.“Hey,” he said before Alex could utter a word.“Andrew, pardon my manners. I shouldn’t call you by this time of the day,” Alex uttered in a hushed tone. “Anyways, I have something I would like to show you. I mean, it’s not right to let you see what progress my department and I have been able to make so far on Paul’s involvement in the murder of your w

“Good morning, Andrew,” Alex muttered as he closed in.Andrew stood up and shook hands with him. “I knew you would turn up before nine o’clock.”Alex scoffed. “That’s the spirit, man.”They took their seats, and the waiter entered almost immediately with Andrew’s order. She served it on the table and gestured at Alex. “Sir…”“Get me the same thing you served him,” Alex said dismissively. The waitress nodded and left without saying a word.“So, what do you have for me?” Andrew asked, waiting eagerly to hear the good news he had been yearning for.Alex swallowed and placed his briefcase on the desk. “First of all, I’d like to inform you that the Nelsons’ lawyer secured their bail just a few hours after they were taken into custody. His words were that the ex-maid’s testimony wasn’t valid enough to keep his clients in police custody. He asked us to come with something stronger next time. That dude is quite arrogant, but…”Alex opened the briefcase and took a file out of it. He dropped th

Andrew ambled straight to the parking lot downstairs. Work these days was no longer something he gave much of his attention to. Everything had lost its taste the moment his wife lost her life, the moment he set eyes on her corpse. He swallowed. People seemed to have noticed his indifference to almost everything existing around him since his wife’s passing. He made for his car, but as he approached it, he saw the parking lot’s security guard standing beside it with a white envelope. The security guard approached him as soon as he showed up.“Sir, someone asked me to deliver this to you. He said it’s from your ex-in-law, Paul.”Andrew shrugged the guard aside and made for his car. He gave the car a quick inspection just to be sure nothing had been planted in it, then he threw open the door and hopped in.The security guard came to his window and gave it a gentle knock. Andrew wound down the window.“Sir, aren’t you…”“Do you want to get fired as early as tomorrow morning?” Andrew asked.
Chapter 67
Tina and Nina were home alone. This was the first time in a very long time that they had been left alone at home because everybody had been arrested, and they were making calls frantically, looking for a way to get their parents out of jail."Please, sir, look into this. My parents cannot just be arrested without much evidence. They did nothing," Tina pleaded with the lawyer who was speaking with her on the phone."Miss Tina, evidence was brought against your family, and your parents have a weakness that they ordered someone to do something evil, so I cannot get them out of jail now," the lawyer informed her.Tina bit her lower lip.She did not understand how bad things were happening to them one after the other because, right now, she did not know what to do. Her father was the main person running the company, and she and her sister had to go to the company to tell the shareholders and everybody that what happened was a misunderstanding. Instead, they were just bombarded with questio

Andrew wasn’t in a hurry to meet up with the police, but he arrived at the police station early enough to witness the arrival of the Nelsons’ lawyers. Indeed, the Nelsons had the fastest and most formidable legal team in the city, but even the best lawyers in the world wouldn’t be able to do much in their case. Andrew knew that, so nearly bumping into the lawyers arriving for their prestigious clients meant nothing to him.He parked at a safe corner, some distance away from the vehicle the Nelsons’ legal team arrived in. Alex undid his seat belt and alighted first while Andrew turned off the ignition and followed suit. The both of them marched to the entrance of the police station, and to Andrew’s shock, a group of press people blocked his way, holding microphones and cameras to his face.“Sir…”Alex waited by the door for Andrew to finish with the press, but Andrew didn’t seem interested in talking to anyone aside from the investigators and, probably, his lawyers. He pushed his wa

Though the police had strong evidence that the Nelsons could barely deny, their legal counsel managed to put up a good fight, leaving the court with no other choice but to adjourn the case. However, Andrew had already granted the press an interview, briefing them on what had happened to his wife and what the investigations had uncovered. The police spokesperson also did well to grant a press interview, stating that the evidence gathered by the police investigations department was glaring. No one could deny the fact that the Nelsons had murdered their daughter and offered her heart to the doctors for Paul’s urgent heart transplant.Though the Nelsons’ legal counsel did well to deny the allegations levelled by the police and Andrew, the news spread far and wide within a matter of hours. Andrew knew how fast news travelled, but he hadn’t expected the allegations levelled against the Nelsons to spread so quickly. They were supposed to have a top-notch damage control agency helping them wi

Mr. Nelson sat on his bed in his cell with his head bowed towards the floor. The last time he caught sight and scent of the world beyond the walls of his cell was the day he and his family were charged in court by the police. Now, not even his legal counsel was able to secure his release. The case had been adjourned. That meant he would have to stay a little longer in his cell before returning to court to bargain for his freedom and that of his family.Aside from the court hearing, he hadn’t seen or heard from the outside world since then. A prison warden stopped at his door with a baton. The warden knocked on the door with the end of his baton.“Mr. Nelson.”Mr. Nelson looked up. His face was heavy with worry and panic. The last thing he had ever wanted for himself and his family was to end up in jail for doing something they considered insignificant. To him and his family, Lily had served the purpose for which she was adopted in the first place. Now, the consequences of what they ha
