Chapter 1

Chapter 1 : A poor man.

The poor have no say in what happens to them. You would think that is a lie, but it really is the truth of reality.

It was raining hard and thunder struck with no mercy, and kneeling in the rain was Andrew Williams, a poor man begging for money.

If there were tears of pain in his eyes, the rain had washed them away. Even though he was shivering in the rain, there was no sympathy from his father or family who took refuge in front of the mansion, leaving him out there drenched in the rain.

"You told me that if I was serious and needed the money. That I should kneel down in the rain and beg you.” Andrew sighed.

“I am on my knees, I am begging you to give me the money, so my wife needs to get the surgery immediately!" Andrew pleaded loudly to his father.

"I told you to kneel down and ask your stepmother for forgiveness for what you did. I never said that I will give you money to pay for your wife's hospital bills," Williams, his father and the CEO of Williams Corporation, replied coldly, folding his arms. A multi millionaire who always gave donations to poor people to improve his public image, yet he could not spare ten thousand dollars to give to his own biological son , so that he can pay for his wife's treatment, so his wife’s surgery could begin.

"Dad, did you not tell me that you would give me the money? Why are you doing this to me?" Andrew asked, his body shivering and his father just looked at him coldly.

"All I told you was to apologize to your stepmother. I never said I will help you with the money for your wife's medical bills. You are a man, figure it out yourself," Williams, his father said coldly, as he stared at his son.

Andrew did not want to believe that the man who raised him was this heartless, that he would let his own daughter in law die, just to please a woman.

"Andrew, I think you should leave. You're no longer welcome in this house since you did not accept me as your mother, even though I did all I could do for you as a mother," Mrs. Williams told him. Even though Andrew had a lot to say, he clenched his teeth and stayed silent, knowing that speaking out would only give his father more reason not to help.

Andrew had told his father many times that his stepmom was trying to get him out of the house. She had succeeded in framing him for things he would never dream of doing.

It was as if Andrew's father was bewitched by this woman, everything she said, he believed. But he would not believe his own son.

When she came into their home, Andrew was just 17 years old. She tried her best to get him out of the house, when his father wasn’t looking, she would threaten or slap him. But the moment his father turned around, she would cry fake tears, claiming that Andrew was bullying her and calling her a homebreaker.

That would make his father lash out at him. Even though Andrew begged his father to check the CCTV footage, he refused.

At 18 years, Andrew was kicked out of the house after his stepmom lied, saying he had stolen her wedding ring. The ring was actually found in his school bag.

"Dad, are you really going to turn your back on me now that I need you the most?" Andrew asked, his voice breaking.

He didn't know who else to ask for help.

"Did I not tell you to leave my house? I stopped considering you as my son a long time ago. I don't know why you thought that coming here to ask me for help would make me change my mind. Leave my house and do not come back here," Mr. Williams said, then turned his back, opened the door, and walked into his mansion without looking back.

Mrs. Williams waited until she was sure her husband had gone inside. Then she flashed a victorious smile.

"At the end of the day, you will grow old, lonely, and poor," she laughed loudly before walking into the mansion.

"Joe, please… even if we have not been in close contact, you are still my brother. Just help me this once," Andrew asked his stepbrother, desperation in his voice.

"We are both on different levels. What makes you think that if Dad refused to help you, I would? Just leave here before you drop dead in front of us and we’re accused of murder," Joe huffed, glancing away.

"Maria..." Andrew tried, turning to his stepsister.

"I have only one brother and it's Joe. Don't ask me for help," she replied coldly, before walking inside.

Just like that, they both disappeared into the mansion, leaving only the security guards at the door.

Andrew stood up slowly, his legs aching, and walked away ,getting a cab to go toward his in-law's mansion. When he got there, the rain had stopped, but his in-laws refused to see him.

"Please, I need to meet my father-in-law. His daughter is in the hospital. She needs money for medical assistance," Andrew told the security guard, gripping the gate bars.

"We have been given strict instructions not to let you into the mansion. I don't want to lose my job, so I think you should leave or I will call the police," the security guard warned. The last thing Andrew needed was to get arrested while his wife was still in critical condition.

With no other option, Andrew turned back toward the hospital. His heart was full of worry. But when he got there, he froze, bodyguards were standing in front of his wife's door.

"She is dead," one of them said flatly.

"What do you mean? I talked to her today and her condition hasn’t gotten that critical. I want to see her," Andrew said, stepping forward in disbelief.

"Her family has taken her body to be buried," the guard replied without emotion.

"What family? I am her husband!" Andrew yelled, as he furrowed his brows in confusion.
