The king's decree
Noah choked on the golden blood being forced down his throat. His teammates—all headless corpses—surrounded him, holding him in a bear hug so tight he couldn't move. One of them grabbed his hair and pulled it, another pinched his nose, while a third squeezed his jaw open. And hovering above them, holding its bleeding fist over Noah's mouth with a wide grin plastered across its face, was an Ogre. But this wasn't like any Ogre he'd heard about.Silvery white hair fell gracefully from the top of its head in a thick, lustrous mane. Its nose looked like that of a noble. Its skin looked even healthier than Noah's. The only proof it was an Ogre was the short horns protruding from its head and the tusks curving upward from its lips.As Noah forcibly locked eyes with the beast, its grin widened.Golden blood gushed from its hand like an open faucet. Very quickly, Noah couldn't breathe anymore. And when he tried gasping for air, its blood washed down his throat instead. All while the Ogre gr
That's not an ordinary Ogre
Noah could remember the day the Ogre attacked him and Hallel like it was yesterday. They were on their regular scavenge for dinner, still children, when Noah heard something rummaging through the trash. Driven by hunger, bravado, and ignorance in thinking it was a rat, he had the bright idea to catch and eat it.He and Hallel ended up chasing the scurrying sound all the way to a part of the trash heap with almost no one else. Then, an Ogre with the head of a demon and the body of a toddler jumped out and bit Noah's left arm so hard that it almost ripped it clean off. But unfortunately for Noah, his brother, in a panicked mix of screams and tears, awakened to his unique magic in that moment. And with one wave of his hand and a powerful scream, Hallel wrung the Ogre like a wet towel, blood and all, killing it instantly. In front of them…Hallel was taken because of that damned Ogre that left a nasty scar on Noah's left arm.“Slumrat!“ Red Jacket yelled, pinned under a wyvogre: a ten-f
The advantage of insignificance
Right before entering the level six dungeon, Noah had overheard Red Jacket bragging to his teammates.Apparently, Red Jacket was some big-shot wizard's or guild owner's nephew. And said big-shot wizard had pulled some favours to let his nephew and their adventuring party get early access to the dungeon they were in.Usually they wouldn't let a bunch of level three adventurers or wizards go into a dungeon higher than level three, but apparently this dungeon was special. For some reason, the magic officer's survey instrument could only pick up level one, two, and three Ogres so Red Jacket's team were given special permission. And they only wanted to come to this dungeon for one reason. Because there was something in the boss's room they wanted. Something so rare and powerful that simply getting it would instantly raise all their levels. As for what that was, Noah didn't know. But it certainly wasn't this Ogre.Everyone was still stunned by the Triad's death. No sound, no signs of an
I have magic?
Noah choked on the blood being forced down his throat. His teammates—all headless corpses—surrounded him, holding him in a bear hug, preventing him from moving. One of them grabbed his hair and pulled it back, another pinched his nose, while a third squeezed his jaw so he couldn't keep it closed. Hovering above him, holding its bleeding fist over Noah's mouth with a wide grin plastered across its face was the Ogre. Noah's heart pounded against his chest as he struggled. The grip of his teammates didn't falter. He found it harder and harder to breathe. As Noah locked eyes with the Ogre, its grin widened. Blood continued to gush from its hand like a faucet had been cranked to the max. Noah gasped for air, but blood washed down his throat instead. The Ogre grinned even more. The light in Noah's eyes started to dim; his eyes became slits; he was losing consciousness.“You should be grateful,” It said. “If you survive this, your pathetic life will be over.“ It squeezed its fist even ha
Pending task number 4
Noah couldn't believe it.His heart hammered against his chest, but not with fear. This was far different from that. It was a feeling he'd forgotten—the same feeling he'd had when Hallel and he would dream about finding a really expensive watch someone accidentally threw away.Same one he'd gotten when he and Hallel would talk on trash heaps, eating mouldy bread. It was hope.Hope he didn't trust.“No.“ He took his arm back. “That's not possible. I don't have magic,” he said firmly. After sixteen years of living in absolute poverty, pain, and discomfort, how could magic just suddenly show up out of nowhere? All of mankind manifested basic magic from inception. Wizards developed or awakened to unique magic by age ten at the absolute latest. He was far past that. There was no hope for him.He couldn't have magic, much less be a wizard. He couldn't…And yet, the floating text remained in place, staring back at him. Emotionless, mechanical, like the truth of reality.Noah sighed. This h
