Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Marked As TrashTeenage chatter filled the air as a crowd of students gathered before an elevated platform. At its center stood a crystal pillar, humming with power and shifting through every color imaginable, a wondrous sight, visible even from the back of the crowd. To the right, seated on a floating platform, were rows of teachers. They were here to scout outstanding talent for their own tutelage, because today was the general Awakening Day for every eighteen-year-old fit to awaken.Standing beside the crystal was a middle-aged man with short black hair and deep brown eyes, his muscular build visible through the shirt that hugged him tightly. His gaze swept the crowd, fierce and intimidating."I welcome you all to the annual Awakening Ceremony." His voice boomed through the stadium like a loudspeaker, though he carried no mic, it simply sounded like thunder."Today is the day you've all been waiting for, the day you step beyond the ordinary, made possible the moment mana

Chapter 2: Rift BreakTalents were divided into nine ranks, ordered from lowest to highest: F, E, D, C, B, A, S, SS and SSS-rank. F-rank sat at the very bottom. SSS-rank was the cream of the crop.Talent determined how far an awakened individual could go, how supreme their power could eventually become, and how quickly they'd grow through training and levels. Talent mattered. And Kael had just awakened the worst one there was.Talent also determined what kind of attribute grade you got.He stood frozen, still in shock, the silence around him so complete you could have heard a pin drop."This... can't be. This shouldn't... happen," Kael stammered, unable to accept what he'd just awakened."You may leave now. There are others waiting," the examiner said flatly, no trace of emotion in his voice.Kael turned without a word, his head down, unable to face the crowd. Each step felt heavier than the last as he made his way back toward Bradon and Laura.Bradon ran to meet him, placing both han

Chapter 3: Blood for BloodKael walked in a daze, the day's events replaying in his mind like a tape stuck on loop. Just thinking about it made him grit his teeth and clench his fists. Then his phone started buzzing, nonstop."What now?" he groaned, pulling it out. What he read made his eyes go wide with shock.[ALERT! ALERT!! ALERT!! All citizens in Creek Core District are urged to seek underground shelter immediately. A Red-Class rift break has occurred in the area. Any nearby awakened individuals are urged to assist. God help you all. Amen.]Dread washed over Kael's face. One disaster a day should've been enough but a rift break, of all things? A Red-Class one, no less. The same fear spread across everyone around him as the warning sirens began to wail through the district.Panic broke out instantly. People scattered, running for the nearest underground shelter, cars abandoned in the street as it became every man for himself.Kael stood frozen for a moment, his mind racing to catch

Chapter 4: ReawakeningRunning through the abandoned streets at a speed that shouldn't have been possible was Charles Valborg, cutting down every goblin and orc foolish enough to get in his way.Forty minutes earlier, at the academy. After Kael had left."I humbly accept the offer to become the Sword King's student," Bradon said with a deep bow."That settles it then, though we'll need to make it official later. My token's back at the capital, unfortunately," Charles said, looking mildly annoyed with himself.Bradon could barely contain his excitement. The renowned Sword King had just taken him on as a student something he'd never dared believe would actually happen. A wide grin spread across his face as he thought about getting home to share the news, about the look on the faces of everyone who'd doubted him.In your face, assholes, he thought.Still riding the high of it, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the notification, and read it."WHAT?!" Bradon's pu

Chapter 5: HospitalizedThe battle began in earnest as Kael tore through them, his movements fluid, almost weightless. A single punch obliterated a cluster of goblins on contact; every strike of his claws cut down another orc.Bare-handed, he tore limbs from bodies and crushed skulls as he fought. This wasn't a battle anymore, it was a massacre, carried out by one person.Blood soaked the ground beneath the growing pile of corpses, gore scattered across what remained of the street.Kael caught a struggling goblin by the head and crushed it like a grape. The battlefield was a ruin of blood and shattered pavement, destruction everywhere. He turned back toward Elisa, who stood frozen, still processing the scale of what she'd just witnessed. When his gaze met hers, a chill ran through her entire body, the person looking back at her didn't feel like her brother anymore. He started walking toward her, and fear gripped her as she watched him approach, his eyes flat and cold, utterly devoid o

Chapter 6: Unexpected Miracle"Kael, you're awake, and you look great," Bradon said, beaming at the sight of him."As you can see, I'm in great shape," Kael said with a smile."Bro, you were in a coma for three days. I honestly thought you might not wake up," Bradon said, his expression turning somber at the memory."Well, here I am, up, strong, and against all odds," Kael said, flexing to prove the point."It's a relief you and Elisa both made it out of that rift break alive," Bradon said, glancing between them."Yeah. Feels like a miracle, honestly, last thing I remember is getting turned into a bloody mess by an orc," Kael said, his expression darkening."Huh?" Bradon looked confused."What do you mean, bloody mess? When my master found you three, you were all passed out but completely unscratched, right in the middle of a field of corpses," Bradon finished."Your master? And three of us?" Kael frowned, confused."Yeah, the third was an elf girl," Bradon said, assuming Kael was jus
