The distance between the alleyway and the apartment complex felt like a gauntlet. Kirill sprinted, his lungs burning with the sharp, acrid scent of burning plastic and ozone. The orange glow grew brighter, painting the concrete street in hellish hues. His heart hammered against his ribs—not with the rhythmic thud of a man running, but with the frantic, erratic beat of someone realizing the world had fundamentally shifted in the last ten minutes."Maya! Maya, are you in there?" Kirill shouted, his voice cracking. He ignored the burning in his legs.He burst through the charred remains of the front entryway. The lobby was a war zone of splintered wood and overturned furniture. A pillar had collapsed, pinning a staircase, and through the dust, he saw a familiar, greasy silhouette.Mr. Henderson, the man who had threatened to call the police on Kirill for being two days late on rent just last month, was frantically shoving a duffel bag stuffed with cash and canned goods into his coat."He

The metal of the humvee roof groaned like a dying beast, buckling inward under the sheer, unnatural density of Kirill’s descent. He hit the reinforced steel with the force of a wrecking ball, but the impact didn't shatter his spine; it fed it. He felt the familiar, cold hum of the system vibrating in his marrow, soaking up the kinetic energy of the fall and storing it in his muscles like a coiled spring."What the hell was that!" the soldier inside the cabin roared, the sound muffled by the thick armor plating.Kirill didn't wait for a second invitation. He rolled off the hood of the humvee, landing in a deep, grounded crouch on the cracked asphalt. His skin was still rippling with that faint, metallic gray sheen, his muscles tight and humming with the stored power of the five-story plummet."Don't shoot!" Kirill barked, his voice projecting with a strange, heavy resonance that stopped the soldiers in their tracks. "I'm not one of those things. I’m a civilian."The lead soldier steppe

The darkness of the subway station felt like a physical weight, thick with the scent of ozone and stale, damp earth. Kirill’s vision, blurred by the lingering aftermath of Hector’s flashbang, slowly began to knit itself back together. The spots cleared, and the subterranean gloom resolved into sharper shapes."Maya?" he whispered, his voice catching in his throat. She was huddled against the cold tiles, her back pressed against the rusted frame of a ticket booth. In the dim light, her eyes didn't just reflect the stray flickers of firelight from above; they glowed with a faint, unnatural cerulean hue that seemed to pulse in sync with her frantic breathing."Kirill?" she breathed, her voice trembling. "Is that really you? Oh god, you're bleeding. Wait, no... that’s not your blood, is it?"Kirill blinked, his eyes adjusting enough to see the sheer terror etched onto her face. She looked exhausted, her clothes torn and covered in the same gray dust that coated the rest of the city. "Maya

Kirill grunted as he hauled himself off the dusty subway floor, his joints popping like dry kindling. Every muscle felt like it had been tenderized with a sledgehammer, but the heavy, metallic hum in his bones had finally settled into a dull, manageable throb. He looked at Maya, who was still staring at her glowing device with a frantic, wide-eyed intensity."Five minutes are up, Maya," Kirill said, wiping a streak of grime from his forehead. "We need to move before those guys come back with something bigger than an electric net. My skin is tough, but I’m pretty sure I’m not immune to a literal tank shell yet."Maya didn't look up immediately. Her fingers danced across the holographic interface. "The probability of their immediate return is dropping, but the secondary search teams are already converging on the sector exits. Kirill, if we go left, there’s a sixty percent chance of a fatal encounter. If we go right, it’s forty percent, but the terrain is unstable.""I’ll take the unstab

The red glow didn't just flicker; it expanded, swallowing the shadows of the tunnel until the rusted walls bled crimson. The rhythmic thudding grew into a deafening roar of grinding stone and shrieking metal."Maya, tell me that’s a very bright, very angry subway train," Kirill said, his voice tightening as his knuckles took on a dull, metallic sheen."It’s not a train!" Maya screamed, her device emitting a frantic, high-pitched whine. "The seismic signature is biological! Kirill, move! It’s coming through the—"Before she could finish, the concrete wall to their left disintegrated.A shower of pulverized brick and rebar exploded into the tunnel, followed by a nightmare of chitin and muscle. It was a mole, but twisted by whatever rot had claimed the world into something the size of a heavy-duty excavator. Its snout was a chaotic star of twitching, fleshy tentacles, and its claws were curved scimitars of bone-white ivory that hummed as they sheared through the thick steel subway rails
