Chapter 11: The Pathless Fights 2
The crowd exploded. Fred lowered his sword. He had won. He was going to the final. The announcer stepped forward again. "The first semifinal is complete! Fred Meyer has secured his place in the championship match!" Fred walked out of the arena and looked toward the opposite side. Now he only needed to know who he would face. The second semifinal began. Lucan Veyre entered the arena. His opponent was another Fire Path Mage who had impressed the crowd throughout the tournament. For several minutes, the two exchanged fire techniques. Fred watched closely. His opponent's flames were powerful, but Lucan's were different. Lucan controlled them with incredible precision. He created narrow streams of fire to limit his opponent's movements, then used bursts of flame to change his own position. When his opponent tried to counterattack, Lucan stepped through the flames and struck his weapon away. The referee immediately raised his hand. "Winner, Lucan Veyre!" The crowd erupted. Fred loo
Chapter 12: Black Path Terrorists
The Summer Flame Festival was supposed to end with celebration. The sun had already begun to sink beyond the rooftops of Arkarin, painting the streets in warm orange light. Merchants were still calling out to the remaining crowds, musicians continued playing near the central square, and families wandered between stalls while discussing the day's tournament. Fred walked beside his family with his sword secured at his waist. His loss to Lucan Veyre still bothered him. Not because he hated losing. He simply hated knowing that there was still a gap between them. Lucan had been stronger. Fred had learned from the fight, but learning did not erase the result. "I still think you did well," Salia said. Fred glanced at her. "You watched the whole thing?" "Of course." Narissa smiled. "You made it all the way to the final." "And then lost," Fred replied. Derek looked up at him. "Next time you'll win." Fred smiled faintly. "That's the plan." A loud bell suddenly rang
Chapter 13: The Corrupted Dragon 1
Two days had passed since the attack of the Black Path Mages. It had not escaped Arkarin's notice, but the city could not be frozen like this. The guards were more numerous than ever and patrols watched the streets from dusk until dawn. People were careful when they passed someone wearing dark clothes, but the marketplace was growing busier. The merchants had returned to their stalls and the blacksmiths to their forges. Families flowed through the city freely again. Fear remained, of course. But it had to learn to share this place with everyone. Fred walked the marketplace with Salia and Narissa that morning. They had been sent to fetch a few things for the family, and for the first time since the festival attack, things almost seemed completely normal. Almost. Salia watched the royal guards walking nearby. "Everyone is still talking about the attack." Fred glanced around at the people. "They probably will for a while." "Do you think the Black Path Mages w
Chapter 14: The Corrupted Dragon 2
The two girls disappeared into the crowd of people getting away and Fred turned back toward the dragon only after he saw a group of royal guards surrounding them. His expression was one of fear, but another emotion was far stronger in his features. He was angry. Not at the dragon, but at himself. All his life, others had looked at him and decided what he could not do. No Path. No magic. Weak. Useless. He had accepted that he was different, but he had never accepted that he was worthless. And now he was standing in the middle of a city where people were dying, and the strongest mages were running away because their attacks were making the monster even stronger. Fred looked down at his sword. It was only a normal sword, but it had no magical properties either. No special name. No legendary history. He had bought it with money he had earned himself, and it was his. Just like his choice. "I don't need a Path to protect someone." Fred tightened his grip on the hilt of his
Chapter 15: The Dragon Falls
The broken wooden stall pressed around the Fred. For several seconds he could not hear anything, except the ringing in his ears. The dust filled the air, wood and stone chips dug into his flesh, making him painfully aware of the broken ribs and the throbbing shoulder. He forced himself to push against the debris, gritting his teeth against the pain. "Move..." His hand slipped on the wood, sending a sharp pain through his ribs. Fred let out a shaky breath, barely able to move. The last thing he remembered was the blow to his side from the dragon's tail, after his broken sword had pierced through the space between the beast's ribs. He had no idea what had happened next. "Fred!" Someone was calling his name. His eyes snapped open. "Salia?" "Fred!" This time the voice was closer, coming from somewhere above him. Salia was back. She had returned with the others, the royal guards, but it seems that as soon as the threat had passed, she could no longer stay away from him.
Chapter 16: The Aftermath
Morning came quietly to Arkarin. There were no festival songs echoing through the streets. No laughter of children playing along the cobbled roads. No merchants calling out their wares to passing customers. Instead the city awoke to a grey sky and the acrid smell of smoke. Fred opened his eyes slowly. For a moment he couldn't remember where he was. Then came the pain. Fred's ribs ached as he inhaled deeply. His left arm was wrapped tightly, stiff with the supporting bandages. He looked up at the unfamiliar ceiling. A medical tent. Fred's heart clenched as the events of the previous day came flooding back to him. The dragon. The ruined street. His broken sword. Salia. Narissa. Fred tried to sit up, but a voice told him not to. "Don't." Salia's eyes were on him from the chair next to the bed, her arms folded across her chest. "You've been out for hours." Fred looked around. "Where's Narissa?" "She went back with Mother." "Mother came?" Salia nodded. "She
Chapter 17: Royal Summons and Rewards 1
The royal seal rested neatly by Fred's bedside as he woke. A golden symbol rested on a small table, accompanied by two guards in royal crest armor. Fred stared at the royal seal for several seconds before he understood its meaning. Someone important wanted to speak with him. Fred slowly pushed himself up, wincing as the action sent a sharp pain through his ribs and shoulder. One guard stepped to him. "Fred Meyer?" "Yes." "The King demands your presence at the palace." Fred stared at the royal seal again. "The King?" "Yes." Fred swallowed. He had fought a corrupted beast, nearly died and was currently recovering from his injuries. It was hard for him to believe the King wanted to speak to him personally. "Am I being punished?" The guard almost smiled. "You will have to ask His Majesty." Fred exhaled. "That does not inspire much confidence." The guard extended a hand to him. Fred took it and allowed himself to be pulled to his feet. The movemen
Chapter 18: Royal Summons and Rewards 2
"We thank you for your kindness, Your Majesty." Aurelius turned to Alvin. "Your family has served the Kingdom faithfully for many years. Your family has served as vassals to the Arkadis Empire for countless generations." Alvin bowed his head. "Thank you, Your Majesty." "But I feel that your family's service to the Empire has outgrown the title and rank which you hold." Gasps of shock filled the room. Aurelius stood from his throne. "Therefore, with this decree, I raise the rank of House Meyer from that of Knight to that of Baron." Alvin's eyes widened as did Sarah. Fred stared at his father in disbelief. Knight? The family name might not have been famous, but the title was well known. It had also been a proud day for them when the local lord recognized their service and gave them a title of nobility. Still the rank was much lower than the other noble families in the Kingdom. Fred turned to his father. For generations, their family had held the lowest rank
Chapter 19: The New Baron House
The Meyer estate remains entirely unchanged. Same stone walls, same garden, and same servants. The only difference was the way Fred was viewing it all. The carriage came to a halt near the front entrance to the estate. Fred stepped out onto the stone ground carefully. The pain in his ribs never ceased to bother him, nor did the bandage wrapped around his left arm. Sarah followed closely behind, and Alvin stepped out the last. For a few long moments, the entire group stood in complete silence. They had just left as the Meyer family and had returned as... something else. Alvin looked back at the house. "Baron." Sarah gave a small smile. "I still feel strange saying that." Fred looked at his father. "You're Baron Alvin Meyer now." Alvin let out a deep sigh. "Don't remind me." Fred chuckled. The pain in his ribs immediately reminded him why he shouldn't have been laughing. He clutched the side of his body tightly. Sarah frowned at his sudden action. "You're supposed to be resting."
Chapter 20: The Swordmaster's Lesson 1
The royal messenger departed the Meyer estate soon after delivering Fred the Academy document. He waited in the sitting room with the parchment in his hands as his family debated what it meant. The Royal Academy was no distant ideal, no school only others got to attend. He was in and they'd set up an entrance test - the test he was going to take. The greatest academy in the Kingdom was his, but so was the gauntlet. Fred folded the parchment and set it on the table. Alvin arched a brow. "Remember that the entrance exam is only a taste of what's to come. Once inside the Academy, you'll be surrounded by students who've studied magic their whole lives." Fred exhaled. "I am aware." Sarah's eyes lingered on him. "Which is why you're going to lay low until the healers say otherwise." Fred opened his mouth to argue but Salia beat him to it. “Don't even try.” Fred narrowed his eyes at her. "I wasn't going to say that." "You were." "I was thinking." "You were thi
