The Boy Without A Path
The Meyer's family had gathered for one reason.Today, Fred Meyer would know once and for all if he belonged among them. The examination hall was quiet for a moment, as seven children stood before the long stone table with their parents behind them, and one transparent crystal ball called the Path Crystal, in the middle.Every person on this world was born with a magical Path, defining the type of magic they would use, based on the mana they could control.Seven types of magic existed in total. The Meyer's were known for the Red Path, as for generations their family produced highly skilled Red Path Mages, capable of controlling fire. The examination only confirmed it, as from the crystal ball came a small flame hovering above the twelve-years old girl's hand."Red Path," the examiner said, retreating his hand from the crystal ball, and a proud smile appeared on Sarah's face."Well done, Narissa," she said. The girl nodded and stepped aside, letting the next child, Nalia, go.The nine-
Brother Fred, Let's Go To The Market
The next morning, Fred was already in the training yard. His arms still hurt from yesterday's practice, but Fred wasn't about to stop training because of that. After his Path examination, he had spent most of the day practicing with the wooden sword, with no good results.Fred needed to start somewhere if he wanted to become a swordsmanHe brought the wooden sword up and charged at the training dummy, adjusting his stance and attacking again. The grip on the sword was firmer this time and his movements more controlled. It wasn't exactly a good display, but Fred had improved after yesterday."Brother Fred!"The familiar cry stopped him mid-step.Fred turned around and was met with the sight of Nalia running towards him, with Narissa and Derek not far behind."What are you three doing here?"Nalia skidded to a halt beside him. She grabbed his arm with an intent look on her face."Mother said we're going to the market."Derek was quick to add, "Come with us!"Fred glanced at the wooden s
Sent To The Forest For Hunting
Three days after going into the market, Fred stood in the Meyer estate's courtyard with his new sword resting at his hip.It did not take long for Fred to become aware that today's meeting was not about training. It had not been unusual for his father to call upon him to train in the past.If anything, the fact that Axel and Alvin were waiting on the other side of the room only made it more likely for him to come."Father!" Fred greeted, not expecting his father to be waiting for him. "You wanted to see me?""Recently, you spend a lot of time training with that sword," came Alvin's reply just after he gave a single, grave nod towards his son.Fred turned to look at the sword he bought with his own money."Yes," came his blunt response."Why?" asked his father."Because I want to become stronger," answered his son.Alvin studied his son for a moment longer."And what will you do for your path?"Fred did not need to answer. They both understood that he had not found anything in sixteen
Saved By A Yellow Path Mage
Fred woke up to a throbbing pain in almost every part of his body. His spine still ached from sleeping on a tree, his arms burned from yesterday's battles, and his legs felt as if they'd been weighed down by large boulders since the day he'd entered the forest.Fred sat up from his resting place underneath the tree and stared blankly out at the morning sky. He'd always known becoming a swordsman would be hard work. But nothing in his dreams had prepared him for this.He stood up with a groan and stretched his arms, wincing slightly as he did so.He checked his supplies, making sure there was still enough food and water for the day.Once he'd assured himself that he wasn't starving, he picked up the one thing he'd brought with him into the wilds of the forest. The metal sword was pitted and marred with the scratches and dents of yesterday's battles. These weren't enough to dull the blade, but they were proof that the weapon had actually seen some action - and that Fred could no longer
Saved By A Yellow Path Mage 2
The beast was sent tumbling backward, crashing into a bush and sending leaves and twigs flying everywhere.Fred blinked, still reeling from the shock of the fight. He was still reeling when a figure came into view in front of him, blocking the path of the recovering wolf.Fred's eyes widened as he took in the sight of the new arrival. She was probably around his own age, with long golden hair that fanned out behind her as she turned to face him.She wore a white cape over simple traveling clothes that allowed for freedom of movement, and a strange pale yellow aura seemed to swirl around her body, crackling with occasional bits of lightning.Fred's heart pounded in his chest as he stared at the strange girl, realizing for the first time that he wasn't facing an ordinary wolf. The girl's eyes scanned over him briefly before she looked back at the recovering wolf."Are you injured?"Fred was about to protest, but the pain in his side and the ringing in his ears reminded him that he was f
Return Home 1
The forest was already growing dark by the time Fred and Lyra arrived at its edge. The afternoon sun was casting long shadows over the trees. Fred's body was still recovering from the fight against the Horned Bear and he moved with less confidence. The same pain twisted in his chest at the wrong movement and his arms were leaden with fatigue from the fight. He made no complaints. It was not the first time in the last three days that he had been grateful for a bit of discomfort. His sword was at his hip, cleaned as best he could manage, but with several fresh scratches marring the metal. He ran his fingers lightly over the sheath as they walked. "You really like that sword," Lyra observed. Fred glanced at her. "It's important to me," he said simply. "Because it's your first sword?" "That's part of it." Fred looked down at the weapon. "I bought it myself," he added. "Nobody else chose it for me." Lyra gave a small smile. She understood what he meant. Most things in Fred's
Return Home 2
Fred opened the door and was greeted by the sight of his father. Alvin was seated behind his desk, several papers spread before him, but his attention was on his son the moment he saw him. He took in the torn clothes before looking at the sword at Fred's hip. "You returned.""Yes, Father."Alvin leaned back. "How was the forest?"Fred paused to consider the question."Difficult." A small smile appeared on Alvin's face. "Good." Fred raised an eyebrow. "Good?" "If you had told me it was easy, I would have assumed you learned nothing." Fred stepped farther into the room. "I learned a lot." "Then tell me." Fred related the events of the first day and the lesser fights he had been forced into. He explained the difficulties of real combat and the struggle to react in time when the monsters grew aggressive. He related the events of the Horned Bear. His father's expression grew serious. "You fought a Horned Bear?" "Yes." "With that sword?" Fred nodded. Alvin said nothing for several seconds.
The Festival 1
Three days after returning from the forest, Fred was allowed to leave his room without being told to rest. His body was much better, if only his bruises from the Horned Bear still retained their faint color. His shoulder remained sore but was otherwise mobile and normal. Of course, the first thing Fred thought of doing was to return to the training yard. His sword cut through the morning air as he practiced the same movements it had done for days. His feet moved him forward, he swung, recovered, and repeated the motion while thinking over the fight in the forest. The Horned Bear had been stronger, faster, and more durable than he. If he had fought as he had trained against wooden dummies, he would have been dead.Fred lowered his sword and thought over what he needed to improve. He needed to become better at reading his opponent, sharpening his reactions, and building his strength. Most importantly, he needed more experience."You're training again?"Fred turned and saw Salia standing
The Festival 2
Fred turned toward Alvin. His father had been quiet as he listened to the official speak."Can I enter?"Alvin studied him for several seconds."You've only just recovered.""I know""Your body is not completely healed.""I can still fight."Alvin looked over at Fred's sword before asking, "Why do you want to enter?"Fred thought over the question. He could have just said that he wanted to become stronger; it would have been the truth, but it was not the complete truth. "I want to know how I compare to people who actually know how to fight." Alvin's expression softened."The forest has taught you how dangerous monsters can be. This will teach you something different."Fred nodded. "Then let me try."After a moment, Alvin gave his permission.Fred walked toward the registration table.Several young people noticed him as he approached, though most moved on after a few seconds. One, however, remained watching him.The boy looked about Fred's age and wore the clothing of a minor noble. A
The Corrupted Dragon 1
Two days had passed since the attack of the Black Path Mages. It had not escaped Arkarin's notice, but the city could not be frozen like this. The guards were more numerous than ever and patrols watched the streets from dusk until dawn.People were careful when they passed someone wearing dark clothes, but the marketplace was growing busier. The merchants had returned to their stalls and the blacksmiths to their forges.Families flowed through the city freely again.Fear remained, of course. But it had to learn to share this place with everyone.Fred walked the marketplace with Salia and Narissa that morning. They had been sent to fetch a few things for the family, and for the first time since the festival attack, things almost seemed completely normal.Almost.Salia watched the royal guards walking nearby."Everyone is still talking about the attack."Fred glanced around at the people."They probably will for a while.""Do you think the Black Path Mages will come again?""I don't kno
