Chapter 11: Nothing Strange
Ethan closed the door behind him and finally had a moment to take stock of his situation.A bleak future. A terrible mother. A spineless father. A vicious aunt. A family coming apart at the seams. It practically rhymed. The whole thing had the underlying tone of a comedy that was secretly a tragedy.Still. Ethan pulled the neatly folded $13 out of his pocket and set it down on the glass table. He suddenly thought of the red bow clip in Nora's hair. It really had been beautiful.Having confirmed his rebirth and then gotten pummeled by life for an entire day straight, Ethan figured it was finally time to show off some actual skill.Life hands you hardship, you hand it back a victory song.Man, that sounded good even just thinking it.He spread out today's test papers, then went to the bookshelf and dug up a few more from various subjects. Good. Time to put decades of hard-earned skill to the test. This English paper. Fifty-three points. The lowest in the class. Heh. We'll see about that
Chapter 12: Is He Sick?
Ethan went back to his room, dropped into a chair, and just sat there. Out in the living room, his parents carried on, completely oblivious to everything. He laughed again, out of nowhere. That day, Ethan had seen Margaret still alive. Robert, whose back hadn't yet started to hunch. Nora, who hadn't vanished from his life. He'd made plans to grab barbecue with Danny, and he'd ended things with Camille.Sure, he'd gotten the lowest score in the class on his English test that day.But it felt like he had the whole world in his hands anyway. On his first night back, Ethan slept like a rock....Ethan slept great that night. What he didn't know was how many other people were lying awake, restless and confused.Danny got home and his phone wouldn't stop ringing, everyone in their social circle calling to ask about Ethan's "heroics" that day. He had to field every single one of their little jabs and brags."Yeah, that's right, I was standing right next to him. Yeah, Camille's a big deal at
Chapter 13: As Hard as Iron, Starting Over
Ethan woke up to another early morning. He got dressed, walked to the door, and hesitated for a moment before opening it.Margaret was already busy in the kitchen, steaming buns for breakfast.Don't even bother asking what you wanted to eat that day. With Margaret, you ate whatever she made, no questions asked.Ethan had always been known as the easy kid to feed in this house.Lucky for him, Margaret's cooking was actually pretty good, so he could usually coast through meals without complaint.Robert got up too, washed up, and waited at the table for Margaret to bring the food out, same as Ethan.Ethan nodded at his dad. "Morning, Dad."Robert reached out and patted Ethan on the head. When Ethan didn't react the way he usually did, Robert made a surprised little sound and patted him again.Ethan had always been an easy kid to love, popular with every relative and family friend since he was little. That was part of why Walter had insisted on claiming him as a godson in the first place.
Chapter 14: Hey, Friend
Ethan had originally wanted to actually experience the bus ride, weaving through the streets and alleys, soaking in the atmosphere of Riverton in the early 2000s. Instead, he just ended up getting shoved against the window by the crowd.Pressed flat against the glass, swaying with the bus and the shifting light, he finally made it to the Willow Street stop for Hartwell High and got spit back out onto the sidewalk. He didn't look elegant. He didn't look handsome. He'd pictured himself with that half-bright, half-melancholy look, like some brooding movie star in a music video, riding the bus lost in thought. Instead he looked like he'd just escaped a disaster. No wonder he hated taking the bus. In a city as packed as Riverton, the bus alone could wear you out completely. After getting off at the stop, cars couldn't really get much farther anyway. Most students coming to school got off right there and walked up the tree-lined road to the main gate of Hartwell High.He usually didn't meet
Chapter 15: My Face Turned Red
Ethan was genuinely caught off guard by how natural Camille had been about the whole thing. But having already lived through this once before, he knew exactly what she was capable of. It wasn't really that surprising. She'd handled it perfectly. Wiped out yesterday's embarrassment completely, and did it in public, shutting down all the baseless gossip in one move.A true master at this.Ethan shook his head, slowed down, and wandered toward the main building. That was when he noticed Dana and Megan hadn't actually gone far. Still hovering nearby.Dana was looking at him with something like sympathy, clearly about to say something."Stop. Don't."Ethan cut her off before she could get a word out. He didn't want to hear whatever she was about to say."Oh." Dana nodded."And stay away from me."Dana took a step sideways, putting a little distance between them.Once he'd walked off a ways, she couldn't resist shouting after him anyway. "If you change your mind, I'll put in a good word for
Chapter 16: Sly Old Fox
In their homeroom, Andrew Kessler's grades were in a tier all their own, way ahead of everyone else. The second tier was Nora, Emily, and Owen.Andrew's overall ranking was first in the grade, no weak subjects anywhere, mostly thanks to how fast he picked things up and how quickly he thought on his feet. When it came to learning English, there were basically two schools of thought: the grind-it-out approach, and the smart-method approach.Andrew was firmly in the smart-method camp, never really relying on sheer effort. For him, English mostly came down to building vocabulary, locking down grammar, and sharpening listening comprehension.Andrew was talented, sure, but he wasn't a god. There was still plenty of vocabulary he hadn't gotten around to learning, and he couldn't preview every single subject every single day. Sometimes he just crammed right there in class, and usually that was more than enough. He figured if he'd had to answer that translation question himself, he probably wo
Chapter 17: Rectification
Ethan was pretty sure Nora, sly fox that she was, wasn't going to be easy to catch.Luckily, catching the fox wasn't actually some mandatory item on his post-rebirth to-do list. Right now he had plenty of other things to handle, and they were tangled enough that he barely knew where to start. He needed money, obviously. Money earned the right way, and without eating up too much of his current bandwidth. The semester was winding down anyway, so a lot of that could wait for winter break. His main focus right now was pulling off an underachiever's comeback story, and that took a lot of groundwork. He'd started actually going to class and doing practice problems that day, which had Danny scoffing, convinced he was just asking for trouble. But only Ethan knew the real story. He already had the foundation from before. He was just rusty, rebuilding something that used to be second nature.Free public education through high school had reshaped the whole landscape of American life, generation
Chapter 18: A Sleepless Night's Frenzy
The story of Ethan and Camille making up became yet another legend in the grade.Of course, the real star of this particular story was Camille.Camille had successfully stirred the whole thing back up, sparking a fresh round of gossip. Her status as Hartwell's reigning goddess stayed completely untouchable, her reputation unmatched. There are always people like that in this world. No matter the situation, even when the odds are stacked against them, they somehow turn it all around in the end. People like that tend to become major players in whatever world they're operating in.Ethan had always believed that people who sail through life without a hitch, climbing steadily the whole way, aren't the ones worth envying. The people who actually impress you are the ones who get knocked down by a storm and come out the other side standing taller than before.Plenty of people manage ten years of fame. The ones who stay relevant for half a lifetime, though, those are the real heavyweights. Just
Chapter 19: Lessons
A week went by just like that, and Friday, their day off, finally rolled around.Freshmen and sophomores got weekends off. Seniors weren't guaranteed the same luxury. On Thursday, Margaret announced, practically glowing, "Your aunt's company is throwing a New Year's party Friday, and they want us there too! Come on, I'll get you a good meal out of it!"Ethan felt a familiar wave of helplessness wash over him.Normally, hosting in this family worked on a give-and-take basis. Deborah operated differently. If Ethan's family ever hosted something, she'd never bother hosting in return. Because her husband was the union president and she managed a store herself, whenever the company threw a tea party or a company-funded dinner, she'd conveniently invite Ethan's family along. The company's group dinners always had deals with certain restaurants, usually with a few extra tables reserved. It would've been wasteful to leave them empty, so when company leadership invited family members along to
Chapter 20: A Resounding Thing
"Your Hartwell is such a good school, you don't even know how lucky you are. If I could go back, I'd have picked Hartwell over the Lakeside scholarship in a heartbeat. I bet my grades would've been even better!"Lauren wasn't lying, either. She genuinely wished she'd ended up at Hartwell, partly because of how its reputation had only grown over the years. Success bred more success, more wealthy and connected families scrambling to get their kids in, which only amplified the whole aura of prestige around the place.Lauren craved that feeling, attending somewhere that practically guaranteed you'd stand out, that gave you an automatic boost just by association. And honestly, it wasn't an unreasonable thing to want. Take Hartwell's reigning school beauty, Nora, who'd been famous for ages. Or Camille, who'd once completely bewitched Lakeside's own heartthrob, had him waiting outside Hartwell's gate every single day, something the whole district knew about. There was also a girl on the gymn
