11: First Trace
Leo spent the next three hours pretending not to investigate the line that had appeared beneath his feet. He failed. The first failure happened during lunch. He sat at the end of a cafeteria table with a tray of rice, chicken, and something labelled vegetable stew. He ignored the stew and drew the movement diagram from memory on a paper napkin. The centre circle. The path outward. The return. His pen moved without him planning each line. When the drawing was complete, the napkin became cold. A tiny notification appeared over the table. [Compatible pattern detected.] [Record interaction: 1] [Restoration progress: 0.00%] Leo dropped the pen. The notification vanished when a student walked past. He folded the napkin and placed it in his pocket. The second failure happened in the library. He opened the grey book in the staff room and placed the napkin beside it. The silver thread on the cover brightened but did not move. The book remained shut. Leo tapped the cover. "I h
12: Professor Ruth’s Locked Drawer
Professor Ruth did not ask Leo to leave the staff room. That was almost more worrying than if she had yelled. She stood beside the desk while he kept the grey book closed beneath his hand. The academy library was quiet around them. Somewhere in the public wing, a printer was making a dying noise, but nobody came to check it. "Movement theory," Professor Ruth repeated. Leo nodded. "A fascinating subject. Lots of movement. Some theory." "You searched the royal diplomatic archive." His mouth went dry. The archive notification had said administrator notification pending, but Leo had hoped pending meant several weeks. Apparently it meant Professor Ruth walking into the room before he had time to invent a better lie. "I searched a public record." "The record is not public." "It was on a terminal without a warning label." "The warning label appears after the second access attempt." "Then I am glad I stopped at one." Professor Ruth’s eyes narrowed. "You accessed it once." Leo sa
13: Worst Study Group
The security camera stayed black for eleven seconds. Leo counted every one of them. Then its red indicator came back on. Nothing else happened. No alarm. No voice from the speakers. No sudden arrival of people with serious faces and better equipment. The staff room door remained open, and the corridor outside was empty. Leo still spent the rest of the night avoiding cameras. By morning, he had reached an important conclusion. He needed information. That was a terrible conclusion because information usually required work, and work was the enemy of his natural lifestyle. Unfortunately, every answer he wanted was locked inside old records, damaged reports, or Professor Ruth’s expression. Leo decided to start with classmates. He found Claire and Hannah in the academy’s second-floor study lounge. Claire was organising notes into coloured folders. Hannah was using the edge of a book to sharpen a pencil because apparently pencils were now enemies too. Leo placed his own notes on th
14: The Assassin in the Margins
The name stayed on the crystal reader for less than a second. Then the screen went dark.Daniel slapped the side of the device. "That was not supposed to happen.""It gave us a result," Hannah said."It gave us half a result. Those are different and usually more annoying."Leo reached for the reader. The moment his fingers touched the metal, his class window opened.[Compatible evidence source detected.] [Record owner correlation: Nadia] [Restoration progress: 2.05%]He pulled his hand away before anybody could notice the grey light beneath his skin."Can you make it display the trace again?" he asked.Daniel frowned. "Maybe. The reader is built for equipment, not records. Whatever it detected was not a normal object signature.""Try anyway."Daniel tried three times. The first attempt showed the academy’s storage system. The second produced a list of broken mana batteries. The third caused the reader to smoke.Daniel quickly placed it inside an empty food bag."I think it needs a
15: The Library’s First Demand
The door did not open.Leo could see the handle moving, but the latch remained locked. Hannah stood beside the table with her hand near her knife. Daniel held the repaired crystal reader like it was a weapon, which was a brave decision considering the reader had nearly exploded twice. The scraping sound stopped.Nobody spoke.A System warning hovered above the evidence sleeve.[Unregistered observer detected.]Leo looked at the grey book beneath his jacket. It had become warm enough to hurt. The room’s sound-dampening runes flickered again. The door handle moved down halfway. A thin grey line appeared around the frame. Not a normal line. The same kind of outline that had formed the hidden door in the old library. The Spectral Library was trying to overlap with the room.Leo pulled the evidence sleeve toward him.The ash inside it shifted into a narrow black strip.A black catalogue card slid out through the plastic. It landed on the table. The word **Threadstep** glowed across its sur
16: A Name Beneath the Ink
The lights went out.Leo heard Hannah move beside him. Daniel made a small noise that was probably meant to be brave and failed halfway through. The circular room became completely dark. Then the lamp above the centre table turned on.Nadia was still sitting in the empty chair, but her body kept breaking apart at the edges. Dust passed through her shoulders. Her face sharpened for one second, then blurred again. The scar above her left eyebrow remained clear. She looked at Leo."You brought witnesses."Leo glanced at Hannah and Daniel."They invited themselves.""That is not how witnesses usually work.""I am new to the whole process."Nadia looked toward the two students. Hannah had her knife drawn, although the blade was made for training and would probably annoy a real monster more than injure it. Daniel was holding the broken crystal reader in both hands."Can they hear me?" Nadia asked."Yes," Leo said. The System window opened above the table.[Record manifestation: Partial] [
17: One Step Through Space
Leo discovered that learning a supernatural movement skill was mostly falling down in new and creative ways. The first attempt happened in the empty library before sunrise. He placed the grey book on the desk, marked a point on the floor, and followed the instructions displayed by the System.[Path Marking: Select origin.] [Path length limit: 3 metres.] [Return direction: Fixed.] [Activation time: 2 seconds]Leo stood on the marked point.A silver thread appeared between his right foot and the floor. It was thin enough to mistake for a reflection, but when he moved his foot, the thread stayed where it was.He took one step forward. The thread tightened.Leo felt a pull behind his ribs.He activated the skill. The world folded. Not dramatically. There was no explosion or portal. The library simply became two pictures placed on top of each other. The shelves moved closer, then farther away. His stomach flipped. He returned to the marked point on his knees. The silver thread vanish
18: The Price of Showing Off
The first part of the obstacle course went well. That should have warned Leo.The course contained three moving barriers, two training constructs, and a set of platforms that rose and fell at irregular intervals. The purpose was to reach the opposite side, collect a flag, and return before the timer expired.Leo had spent the morning practising one-metre returns, but the course required him to move faster than the Library’s instructions recommended. He had not told Hannah about the exact limits because admitting that he needed two seconds to escape from a club did not sound impressive. The training field was crowded. Students watched from behind the safety line, waiting to see whether the useless librarian would fail again. Leo could feel the attention pressing against his back before the bell even rang.Hannah crossed the first section by punching through a padded barrier.Leo went around it.He marked a path at the edge of the platform, moved two metres forward, and activated Thread
