18: The Price of Showing Off
The first part of the obstacle course went well.That should have warned Leo.The course contained three moving barriers, two training constructs, and a set of platforms that rose and fell at irregular intervals. The purpose was to reach the opposite side, collect a flag, and return before the timer expired.Leo had spent the morning practising one-metre returns, but the course required him to move faster than the Library’s instructions recommended. The door did not open.Leo could see the handle moving, but the latch remained locked. Hannah stood beside the table with her hand near her knife. The security camera stayed black for eleven seconds. Leo counted every one of them. Then its red indicator came back on. Nothing else happened. No alarm. No voice from the speakers. No sudden arrival of people with serious faces and better equipment. The staff room door remained open, and the corridor outside was empty. Leo still spent the rest of the night avoiding cameras. By morning, he had reached an important conclusion. He needed information. That was a terrible conclusion because information usually required work, and work was the enemy of his natural lifestyle.
