CHAPTER 1 — THE FIREBALL
The fireball was already flying toward Fred's face when the laughter began. It tore across the assessment arena like a miniature sun, its orange flames twisting around a violently compressed mana core. The heat reached Fred before the spell itself, drying his eyes and making every breath taste like smoke. He had less than two seconds to react. Maybe even less."Move!" someone shouted from the crowd. Fred's feet finally responded. He threw himself sideways just as the fireball screamed past his shoulder and slammed into the reinforced barrier behind him. The impact shook the entire arena, sending fragments of scorched stone skittering across the floor.Fred remained crouched for a moment, one hand pressed against the ground as he fought to steady his breathing. Then he heard the laughter.Hundreds of students had gathered around the Global Academy of Higher Magic's first-year assessment arena. Some wore expensive academy uniforms decorated with family insignias, while others displayed
CHAPTER 2 — THE BOY WHO SHOULDN'T BE HERE
"Wait."Fred stopped.Professor Vale's voice wasn't loud, but something about its quiet authority made the hairs on the back of Fred's neck rise.Students were still leaving the arena behind them, their voices blending into a constant murmur that echoed through the corridor. None of them seemed to notice the strange tension between the professor and the boy who had just survived a fireball.Fred slowly turned around."What did you see, Professor?"Vale didn't answer immediately. His eyes remained fixed on Fred, studying him with an intensity that made Fred increasingly uncomfortable. The professor wasn't looking at his torn uniform or the blood on his cheek. He wasn't even looking at his hands. He was looking directly at him.It was the same expression a scientist might wear when examining an unknown creature that had suddenly appeared inside a laboratory. After several seconds, however, Vale's expression returned to normal."Nothing."Fred frowned."You just said—""I said nothing."
CHAPTER 3 — THE FIRST LESSON
The classroom door opened before Fred could answer.Professor Vale stood outside. His expression was calm, but his eyes told a different story.Fred's fingers tightened around the edge of his desk as the professor stepped into the room and quietly closed the door behind him.For several seconds, neither of them spoke. The warning from the previous night still echoed through Fred's mind.Don't let the academy know what's inside your core.Fred wanted answers, but instead of offering any, Vale looked directly at him and asked a question."Did you attempt to analyze your core?"Fred hesitated. That hesitation was enough.Vale released a quiet sigh."I thought so."Fred pushed himself away from the desk and stood."You knew?""I suspected.""What is the restriction?"The professor's expression hardened."I don't know."Fred stared at him, struggling to understand the answer."You don't know?""I know enough to understand that you shouldn't try to remove it.""Who put it there?"Vale turne
CHAPTER 4 — THE FIRST ENEMY
Fred barely made it ten steps out of the spellcraft classroom before Lucian Veyr stepped directly into his path."Move."Fred stopped.Lucian smiled as several students nearby slowed down to watch. Within seconds, a small crowd had begun gathering around them. Some students pretended they weren't interested and continued walking, although they kept glancing back. Others made no attempt to hide their curiosity. The corridor suddenly felt much narrower than it had a moment earlier.Lucian folded his arms across his chest."I heard something interesting."Fred said nothing."Apparently, the Foundation student thinks he can improve academy spellcraft."A few students laughed.Fred's expression remained unchanged."If you came here to repeat something everyone already heard, you're wasting my time."Lucian's smile disappeared."I came to offer you a chance.""To do what?""Prove that yesterday wasn't luck."Fred stared at him for a moment before glancing toward the training hall.Lucian no
CHAPTER 5 — THE TEST
The alarm bell rang before sunrise, its deep chime rolling across the academy grounds and pulling the dormitories out of their uneasy silence.Fred was already awake. He stood beside the window of his dormitory room, staring toward the enormous black bell tower in the distance as another deep vibration passed through the glass. The bell rang once, then twice, and finally a third time.A moment later, every magical screen throughout the academy illuminated simultaneously.FIRST-YEAR PRACTICAL EXAMINATION — MANDATORYA second message appeared beneath it.LOCATION: CONTROLLED MAGICAL FORESTFred's eyes narrowed as he read the announcement.A survival examination was normal. First-year students were expected to demonstrate their ability to handle real magical environments under controlled conditions. What concerned him was the final line.STUDENT ASSIGNMENTS HAVE BEEN FINALIZED.His wrist bracelet vibrated.Fred lowered his gaze and checked the display.TEAM 17His expression changed almo
CHAPTER 6 — THE THING IN THE FOREST
The creature moved.Fred barely had enough time to react before the instinctive warning left his mouth."RUN!"The trees around them seemed to explode as the creature surged forward. A massive claw tore through the darkness and swept across the clearing with enough force to send branches and leaves flying in every direction.Kael reacted instantly. He shoved Elara out of the claw's path, but the movement left him exposed. The enormous limb struck him across the body with tremendous force.BOOM!Kael's body was thrown backward and slammed into the ground hard enough to crack the earth beneath him."Kael!"Elara immediately raised both hands."Flame Lance!"A spear of fire erupted from her palms and shot toward the creature. The spell struck the monster directly in the chest, and for half a second, the entire forest was illuminated by the resulting explosion. Then the flames vanished. The creature stepped through the smoke without a single visible injury.Elara's face gradually lost its
CHAPTER 7 — THE IMPOSSIBLE COMBINATION
The creature lunged before Fred had time to warn the others. He threw himself to the side, barely rolling out of the way as a massive claw smashed into the ground where he had been standing. The impact sent a powerful shockwave through the clearing, throwing loose soil and broken branches into the air.Kael was hurled backward by the force of the attack, while Elara was knocked into a nearby tree.Nia screamed as she stumbled away from the creature.Simon reacted on instinct. He raised both hands, and the earth beneath him surged upward, forming a rough stone wall between the group and the monster.BOOM!The creature tore through the barrier as though it were made of sand.Simon stumbled backward, staring at the shattered remains of his spell."That won't hold it!""It doesn't have to!" Fred shouted. The monster's head turned toward him.Inside its split chest, the second core pulsed with dark energy. The Codex remained fixed in Fred's vision.[Estimated survival probability: 3%.]Fre
CHAPTER 8 — THE HEADMASTER'S SUMMONS
Fred had barely taken three steps when his legs gave way.“Fred!”Elara caught his arm before he hit the ground, but the force of his collapse dragged her down beside him. She struggled to support his weight, staring at his pale face.“Someone help me!”Simon hurried over, his exhaustion momentarily forgotten. Kael arrived a second later, retrieving his weapon before kneeling beside Fred.“What's wrong with him?” Kael demanded.“He's barely conscious,” Elara replied. “Look at his hands!”Fred's fingers were trembling violently. Thin lines of blue light flickered beneath his skin before disappearing beneath his sleeves.Kael frowned.“Is that what happens when someone uses too much mana?”“No,” Simon said quietly. Both of them turned toward him.Simon was staring at Fred's hands with an expression Fred had never seen on him before.Fear.“I've seen mages exhaust their mana,” Simon continued. “They collapse. Some lose consciousness. But I've never seen their bodies produce a reaction li
CHAPTER 9 — THE MAN BEHIND THE SEAL
“Get away from him!”Professor Vale's shout tore through the teleportation chamber.Fred barely had time to turn before a violent surge of golden energy erupted from his chest. The floor cracked beneath his feet, and every crystal embedded in the chamber walls went dark simultaneously. The armored commander drew his sword.“Professor, what is happening?”“Don't touch him!” Vale snapped. “Nobody touches him!”Fred couldn't hear them properly. Their voices sounded distant, as though they were speaking from the other side of a vast ocean.Inside his mind, the black space had returned. The sealed door stood before him, its golden symbols breaking apart one after another. Beyond it, two enormous eyes watched him with an intensity that made his skin crawl. He was the one who sealed me inside your Codex. The voice echoed through Fred's consciousness.“You said the Headmaster sealed you,” Fred whispered. “Who are you?”The golden eyes narrowed.“Is that truly the first question you wish to as
CHAPTER 10 — THE FACE BEHIND THE GOD
“ELARA, GET DOWN!”Fred threw himself forward as the Headmaster's shadow erupted across the floor. It moved faster than anything Fred had ever seen. Black tendrils shot toward Elara, twisting around the shattered golden formation and tearing chunks of stone from the walls. She barely managed to raise her hands before the darkness struck.A transparent barrier of wind appeared around her.CRACK!The impact sent her crashing against a pillar.“Elara!”Fred scrambled toward her, but the creature standing in the Headmaster's body raised one hand.Fred stopped moving. Not because he wanted to.Because something had seized control of his muscles. His legs locked. His arms became rigid, and an invisible pressure tightened around his throat. The creature smiled with Aldric's face.“Do you understand now, little apprentice? This is what happens when a child opens a door he cannot close.”Fred struggled to breathe.“You… aren't… the Headmaster.”“An excellent observation.”The creature tilted i
