Chapter 11
"It's done." The words rang in Caspian's ears as if it was being repeated life and direct. He should have stormed in.He should have grabbed Cordelia by the arm and demanded answers. He should have looked his grandfather straight in the eyes and asked him to explain what was going on. Instead, he stepped back for a long while, took a slow breath, and pushed the door open with a lazy smile."Good morning."The patriarch didn't flinch. Cordelia, standing near the desk with a tray, smiled warmly. "You're awake. I brought coffee.""Thank you." He took the cup. His eyes locked on hers. Nothing. Not a single crack. She was good."I need to go to Tonopah," he said. He needed somewhere to distract him. Somewhere to remind him that he couldn't just trust another woman so easily after what Graycie did to him. If at all he needed being with a woman, it would take some time. He didn't also like the way his grandpa was dictating his life indirectly. To his question, Sir Titan raised an eyeb
Chapter 12
Boots crunched on the gravel above him.Caspian tried to lift his head but the world tilted sideways. He pressed his good palm against the dry ground, ready to fight with whatever strength was left in him. If they had come to finish him, they would have to work for it."Boss!"The voice came from the road. Then another. Then many, running down the slope, stones rolling ahead of their feet."Boss, over here!""He's alive! He's moving!"Four men in black suits surrounded him in a half circle. Their jackets were covered in dust and their faces were tight with fear. One of them dropped to his knees beside him."Boss, what's wrong? What happened to you?"Caspian squinted at him. Boss? He had been called many things in Tonopah. Poor man. Useless husband. Nobody had ever called him Boss."Don't touch my arm," he rasped."Yes, Boss. Sorry, Boss.""Atlas will send men." That was what Sir Titan had said that morning. Caspian had said no.Apparently, some people didn't listen. He lifted his eyes.
Chapter 13
Atlas stepped in, shut the door behind him and stood at the foot of the bed like a soldier waiting for orders."Sir, how are you feeling?""Like I was thrown off a cliff." Caspian tried to shift and regretted it at once. "Because I was.""Sir, the wreck has been photographed and nobody has reported anything yet. What do I do next?""Nothing for now. And Atlas, Sir Titan must not hear a word of this."Atlas hesitated. "Sir, he will find out.""Not today. If he hears I nearly died in a taxi, he will say I couldn't even protect myself.""Understood, sir.""Now listen. I need your opinion on something."Caspian told him about the doctor at the door, the phone call, the cheating woman who should leave with the man she thought was best for her. When he finished, Atlas blinked. "Sir, are you saying you want to release Graycie?""Yes.""The same Graycie who wrote that she wished you were dead?""The same one." Caspian leaned his head back on the pillow. "Think about it, Atlas. We can't touch O
Chapter 14
Cordelia stepped out to the balcony of the east wing and shut the glass door behind her. She took a deep breath, fixed her face into a hurting one, and dialed. It rang twice."Cordelia?" The voice on the line was deep and commanding. Even over the phone, it carried the weight of a man who sent people to prison for a living. "Why are you calling at this hour? Is everything alright?""Papa." Her voice broke at once. She was good at it. "Papa, I need your help.""What happened? Are you crying?""It's Caspian, Papa."A short silence. "Titan's grandson?""Yes." She sniffed loudly. "You know how much I love him. You know I have never looked at any other man since we were young. And that woman, Graycie, the one who left him at the altar, who slept with another man and even planned to have him killed... Papa, she betrayed him in the worst way.""I heard about the case." Garrett Newman's tone sharpened. "The police sent a report to my office this morning. Attempted murder, conspiracy, illegal f

"I'll pay anything," Caspian said. The room went still.Marlow looked at the Chief. The Chief kept his eyes on the floor. "Double the bail. Triple it. Name the amount, and I will write the check right now.""Mr. Titan," Marlow said carefully, "this is not about money.""Then what is it about?""Sir, I have been in this job for nineteen years." "This woman wrote that she wanted you dead. She learned how to shoot a gun for it. And you are standing in my office begging to pay for her. Do you know what you are doing?""I know exactly what I'm doing."Somebody behind him whispered, "Maybe he still loves her."Caspian ignored it. "Chief, I am the victim. I am asking you to let her go.""And I am telling you, sir, I can't." The Chief finally looked at him. His voice was low and tired. "My hands are tied.""Then untie them.""I wish I could."Kevin touched his sleeve. "Sir, maybe we should step outside for a moment."Caspian shook him off but walked out anyway. The corridor was cold and empty
Chapter 16
"Give me a minute," Cordelia said, glancing at her phone. "I just remembered someone I have to call."She passed Jett back to Caspian and walked to the corner of the office, turning her back to him. She dialed without looking at the screen, like the number was one she knew by heart."Papa, it's me." Her voice was soft and low, but not low enough. "Yes, I'm with him now... No, he has a reason. It's actually a good one... Please, Papa. Can you lift the ban on her bail? Just for today."Caspian's brows shot up.The ban.She had said it so lightly, as if she was asking someone to pass her the salt. And somewhere across the city, a man had picked up his phone and said yes.He almost laughed. It was the kind of laugh that comes when someone lifts a curtain and shows you the whole room.He kept his face blank, adjusted Jett on his arm, and sent Atlas one word.Come.Atlas walked in less than a minute later. He looked around the room, saw Cordelia with her back turned and the phone against her
Chapter 17
The villa was quiet when Caspian returned.Atlas had dropped him at the front steps and gone off to deal with some paperwork. Cordelia had taken Jett upstairs for his bath. Sir Titan's door was shut, and a maid whispered that the old man had gone to rest.Caspian didn't go to his room.He walked straight into the study, the same one where he had planned Graycie's release with Atlas and Kevin only hours ago. He shut the door properly this time, pulled the heavy curtains and dropped into the leather chair. Then he opened his laptop. His ribs ached. His arm throbbed under the cast. But his mind was awake and sharp like a blade.A woman had walked into that police station with a baby on her hip and her father's power in her pocket. He wanted to know who she was.He typed her name.Cordelia Newman. The first page of results loaded. Then the second. Then he stopped scrolling and sat up."What the hell?" he whispered. There were photos of her in a white blazer, smiling on the cover of a busin

Neither of them said a word on the way up.They climbed the stairs side by side, her bare feet silent on the carpet and his shirt hanging loose from her shoulders. Neither of them spoke, they didn't even look at each other, it was as if something unseen had taken them both by the hand and was leading them down the same hallway. The door of his room opened under his palm.It was dark and cool inside, the curtains were drawn and the faint light from the corridor illuminated the floor in its golden light. Cordelia stepped in first, Caspian followed and pushed the door shut behind him.The click of the lock was very loud. She turned around slowly as the shirt slid off her shoulder. He reached out with his left hand and caught the collar, and for a moment they just stood there, close enough to hear each other breathe."Caspian," she whispered."Hmm?""If you want to stop...""I don't."Her fingers found the hem of his trousers and she tugged, while he gathered the torn silk at her waist.Hi
Chapter 19
For a long time, neither of them moved. The room had gone quiet except for the soft hum of the air conditioner and the sound of their slowing breath. Cordelia lay with her head on his left shoulder and one hand resting flat on his chest, just above the white strap around his ribs. The sheet had slipped down to her waist. She didn't bother to pull it up."Did I hurt you?" she asked softly."A little."."Your ribs?""My ribs. My arm. My pride." He stared at the ceiling. "But I'm not complaining."She laughed against his skin. It was a warm, lazy sound that made his chest feel loose. Her fingers began to trace slow circles on his stomach, and he caught her hand and held it still."Don't," he said. "I'll lose what's left of my senses.""Maybe that's the idea.""Cordelia.""Fine, fine." She settled back down, still smiling. "You're no fun.""I am a wounded man.""You are a very stubborn wounded man."They lay like that for a while, talking about nothing. About how the fountain in the garden
Chapter 20
"Well, well," Orion said, strolling toward them with his hands in his pockets. "Look who came to visit."Nobody answered him.Caspian crossed the lobby in four long strides and stopped so close to Orion that the other man had to tilt his head back. His voice dropped to a hiss, low enough that only Orion could hear it."Outside. Now."Orion raised an eyebrow. "Here? In front of everyone?""This is a police headquarters, you idiot. Outside.""Gladly." Orion's smile didn't move. "I was hoping you would ask."Caspian grabbed his sleeve with his left hand and dragged him toward the glass doors. Orion let himself be pulled, still smiling, like a man being led to a party. The officers at the counter looked up. A woman near the bench gasped. Nancy Rose stepped aside from the path without a word, her briefcase held against her chest."Sir!" Atlas's voice came from behind them, quick and panicked. He ran to catch up. "Sir, please. Think about what you are doing."Caspian didn't stop."Sir, this
