Rejected Again
Kai’s POV I wake with a sharp breath, pulling my body off the bed. For a few seconds, I don’t move because of the blinding head ache. I groan loudly, holding my head. Then I start to remember everything. The black water, the heavy chains and…Vazaroth. I should still be there. “Your blood is mine.” His words echo as a reminder in my head again. Echo, not spoken in person which means he’s gone. How? Where am I? I look around and my fingers twitch at the unfamiliar scene. “Oh, you're up?” someone says a few meters away. I turn and see Aelia walking into the room. I watch silently as she takes the seat beside me. “You should be resting. You’re not strong enough to be moving around,” she says. “What are you doing here?” I ask, still confused. Before she can answer, I follow up with another question. “And where the hell am I? Is Vazaroth here?” She looks at me like I’m spitting strange things. “Vazaroth. Who is that?” I swallow. That is my confirmation that he is really gone. “Never
The First Mission.
Kai’s POV“A princess?” I ask. Principal Harden nods. “Yes. The princess of Gombana. She was reported missing just last night and the kingdom has been in a disarray trying to find her.”“And what makes you think Kai will be the one to find her?” Aelia asks him immediately. I mean, the kingdom must have thousands of guards and mages. How come none of them can find one person?”“They are trying, my dear, but this is a princess we’re talking about. Since nothing has come up, it is normal for the king to be worried hence why he is looking for other men to save his daughter.” I tighten my jaw, staring at Aelia. She looks at me before shaking her head. “ don’t think it’s a good idea—.”“I’ll do it,” I cut in before she can finish the words. She throws me a quick look. “What? Are you sure? I mean, you don’t even know what lies ahead. You don’t know what kind of mission this is and what you will encounter with it?”“It doesn’t matter. As long as it gives me a purpose, then I’ll do it. After a
The Horn Kingdom
Kai's POV “Oh, Gombana is the famous horn kingdom?” Aelia says as she gets off the boat before me. “Horn kingdom? What does that mean?” I ask, but I don’t have to wonder for long. As I raise my head, I see exactly what she’s talking about. There are children running through the streets with small curved horns poking through their hair. Women wear their horns decorated with gold rings and thin chains. Men have larger ones, some twisting backward like the horns of a ram. “What the hell?” I whisper to myself. “I can’t believe they are real,” Aelia continues, still staring in awe. She can’t believe they are real which means she had an idea about their existence. On the other hand, I had no idea something like this ever existed. I look at her. “You know about this?” she looks at me, surprised. “You don’t?” I shake my head. “Well, that might not be very surprising. The kingdom is so far away from the others That most people don’t associate with it on a regular basis. But we’ve heard St
The Prince’s Secret.
Aelia’s POVKai and I are escorted into a room we are supposed to use together for the night. Apparently they don’t think they’re supposed to give us separate rooms. We quickly settle in…without saying a word to each other which somehow makes everything worse. I take one side of the bed while Kai takes on the other.I glance at him thinking maybe I should say something to ease the awkwardness but I stop. He’s not even staring in my direction and certainly doesn’t look like he’s suffering from any awkwardness. He's just lying on his back, staring at the ceiling with his hands behind his head, looking completely relaxed. This mess is all mine to bear.I look away quickly. There are dozens of rooms in this palace. Did they really have to put us together in one? I sigh. “Why are you staring?” His voice cuts into my thoughts. My head snaps toward him. “What? No, I wasn’t.”“I saw you.”“No, you didn't. I was only…looking at the flower vase over on that table. It’s beautiful.” Oh shit. I c
The Black Wall
Kai’s POVAs we climb the boat, the cheers around us grow louder. Today is finally the day to do what we came for and not surprisingly, the entire royal family is outside with us. The villagers are also scattered around, all wishing us a successful journey as if we are heading into a war.Aelia looks at me. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” “Not sure. Maybe,” I reply. She shakes her head. “These people…” before she can finish her words, the king steps forward. He raises both hands in a prayer. “May the gods guide you.”The crowd immediately bows, receiving the prayer. After, the king takes my hands, his large black horns still doing so much to unsettle me. “Please,” he begins. “Bring the princess home. And it must be before the seventh day of this calendar.” Today is the fourth day. There is something strange in his voice as he speaks. It’s not quite desperation. Urgency describes it better. And I’m forced to ask about it just out of curiosity. “Is there a specific reason why yo
A Princess’s Trick
Kai’s POV“Please help me.” These are the faint words I hear that force me back to consciousness. I quickly touch the crystal necklace on my neck to make sure it’s still there because in the past, Vazaroth used to use different kinds of tricks to get me to take it off. He would beg me to help him, saying the necklace was locking him in a dungeon. But then I was younger and used to fall for his tricks, but not anymore.“Aelia?” I call but get no response. I quickly use my hand to feel the space around me until I touch a body. She’s still. I pull myself up quickly and start shaking her. “Aelia, get up.” She still doesn’t respond. My heart skips once.I’m about to shake her again when she suddenly coughs. “I’m fine,” she whispers, breathing hard. I let out a deep breath. I quickly reach from my torch, switch it on before pulling her to sit up. “Are you okay? Are you hurt?”“No. I’m fine,” she replies, removing dust from her mouth. She looks around. “Where are we?”“I don’t know.” I cre
The Sacrifice
Princess Aviala’s POV“So you are the two they sent after me?” My eyes move between the duo and my laughter grows louder. The girl looks confused. “What? We’re not here to harm you.”“Liar,” I yell, stepping down from my throne-like chair. “You think I don’t know my parents sent you to bring me dead or alive?” I walk towards them, maintaining my intimidating stare on both of them. The boy doesn’t react. Hasn’t since they first saw me. That confirms the suspicion I have. He’s a dangerous one. He has to go. “Unfortunately, you won’t go back to give them details.” I dip my hand into my cloak, bringing out the small ancient blade hidden there— a blade no magician can fight against no matter the power they have. I wiggle it in their faces, taunting them with the lightning. Before any of them can react, I attack. I barely take two steps towards them when something black flashes through the space between us. I pause, watching as black energy coils around the blade.“What…” I look up and s
The Search.
Kai’s POV “Find them, we must capture the princess Alive!” The king's voice roars from behind us. “Follow here,” the princess shouts. I grab Aelia’s hand and turn into the narrow passage. “Keep running!” We increase our pace as the sound of boots grow louder behind us. “Don’t let them escape!” someone shouts. “How much farther?” Aelia breathes hard beside me. “We have to get to the boat before they realize we are going for it,” the princess replies. “Your father really doesn’t like taking no for an answer,” I say frustratedly. “You have no idea.” We finally burst out of the passage and run toward the boat. “Great, we made it,” Aelia says excitedly. Just as we are about to jump in, “WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING?!” The king's voice thunders behind us. I turn and I see him with his warriors beside him. “Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me,” Aelia whispers. The princess looks around frantically. “Let’s go.” “Where?” I ask. “There’s another boat on the other side of the rocks. I h
Not Guilty.
Kai’s POVJafser pats me on my shoulder playfully. “I saved you, didn’t I?” I stare at him silently. I mean, he basically did, but I’m not about to admit that else, I will never hear the last of it. We are already on the boat, halfway on the sea with Jafser and I paddling. “What are you even doing here? How did you find us?” I ask. He shrugs. I missed you, man.” “You missed him?” Aelia ask playfully, like that was the most ridiculous thing she ever heard. You left the academy because she missed your friend?”“You’re one to talk, Aelia. You’re completely left the academy behind forgetting your studies because of a crush.” I clear my throat, quickly looking away as I’m trying to avoid anything that will make me get dragged into the argument. “That’s not true, Jafser.” “Yeah yeah. That’s not what the rest of the school believes tho. But it doesn’t matter.” He turns back to me, smiling. “We are together now and that’s all that matters.”I stare at him. “I don’t think you know what you’
The Abandoned Cabin
Aelia’s POV“We have to find a place to rest tonight and continue the journey tomorrow,” I hear the princess's voice behind. Kai's voice comes up next. “Why?” “Because the seventh river is not a place we can get to at this hour. It’s getting too dark.”“But I would have really loved to get rid of this thing as soon as possible and I was hoping it could be done today.”I’m still not talking to him so I say nothing. But a sudden breeze makes me shift from where I’m sitting to another place which puts all of them in my vision once again.I see the princess leaning closer and putting her hand on his shoulder, face covered in a small smile. “I understand you’re anxious but trust me this is the way to go about it. Even if we continue the journey overnight, we still want to get to it by midnight. We’ll only get stuck on the way.”Our eyes lock at that very moment and unlike before that I would have quickly broken it, I refuse to. I don’t want him thinking he has some kind of effect on me b
