Kai’s POV
“Fail.” The word lands heavily in my ears but I don’t flinch because it is exactly what I was expecting to hear from the examiner. My father doesn’t look up at the man as he speaks. “Say that again.” The examiner looks down with familiar disappointment. “Sir Blackwell, Kai has failed to bring forth any kind of magic which means he has failed his entrance examination into Aureum Academy.” “Again?” “Again.” My mother closes her eyes, letting out a long disappointed sigh while my brother, Caelum, chuckles, not looking surprised either. I look at him as he leans comfortably against the back of his chair, arms folded across his chest, wearing the same smug expression he has worn every year I’ve failed. This isn’t the first time. It’s not even the second. My father finally raises his eyes and meets mine. “Do you know what your score is?” I don’t respond. Whatever it is can’t be worth knowing. “Thirty-two.” “Thirty-two?” Caelum lets out another laugh. “Caelum,” my mother warns with little interest and he raises both hands in mock surrender. “What? I’m not the one who scored thirty-two.” My fingers tighten under the table. My father walks up to me and slams the report on the desk. “You failed the written examination, the mana assessment and the practical test. EVERY.DAMN.YEAR!” I swallow. “I know.” “You know?!” He slams his palm hard on the table. “Then why are you sitting there like you don’t care?” I look at him before dropping my eyes back on the report, taking note of the red mark over it. KAI BLACKWELL — REJECTED. Every damn year. My chest tightens as I say quietly. “I care.” “Do you?” My mother finally speaks up and I’m surprised it took this long. She’s usually the first to curse me out. “Because it sure as hell doesn’t look like it. Do you know how many times your brother failed?” She points to him. “None,” my father answers for him. “Not even once.” My mother’s face hardens. “That is because as a Blackwell, he understands what is expected of him. Your brother passed this same examination at the top of his year.” He smiles smugly. “He actually scored higher than some of the academy’s second-years,” she continues. “I know.” “His mana core awakened at thirteen.” “I know.” “By the following year, he had already mastered three intermediate spells.” “I know, mother.” “So why can’t you do it?” She fires sharply. “Why have you decided to bring embarrassment and shame to this family by choosing to be so useless?” I look at her, anger coursing through me. But I can’t do anything about it because I know she’s right. No matter how angry I am, she’s right. I am useless. This is the one thing every Aztakh member is supposed to be able to do. Most people’s Mana awaken at thirteen like my brother, the latest is sixteen. But I’m seventeen and still, nothing yet. “Aftet all those achievements, now I’m stuck with a younger brother who can’t even cast a basic spell,” my brother mocks, widening his smirk. “It is truly an embarrassment.” I look at him, locking my jaw. “Are you finished?” He raises a brow. “Oh? You still think you have the audacity to be annoyed?” “And you still think you can mind your busines—?” “Enough!” My father immediately cuts in before I can get word in. “But he started it.” “I said that's enough, Kai.” I stare at him as I go silent. This is what happens when you’re not the favourite child. Your brother can run his mouth all he wants but once you’re about to say anything, you’re cut off. The price to pay for not having my magic I guess. Caelum leans back with a satisfied grin. Must be fun to be in his shoes. “You’re getting worked up about the wrong thing,” my father continues, picking up the report. “I paid for the best private tutors for you. Brought in the best mages…” “Even made your brother tutor you,” my mother adds, which is funny because my brother only spent the time berating me, he never taught me a thing. “Mana pills, the best training equipment, even a live-in personal instructor…all at your disposal and for what?” My father pushes his face closer to mine. “For what, Kai? Just to be a failure again? Just to make us the laughingstock of the city?” My jaw tightens. He laughs bitterly, scratching his forehead as he paces away. My mother mirrors his movements, holding her forehead. “I honestly don’t understand how people can have such different children.” At the mention of that, something cracks in my chest but instead of anger, I almost laugh. I stare at my brother and as expected, he’s running his eyes over me like I’m the most irritating thing he’s ever seen and it doesn’t feel out of place. Caelum has spent his entire life being exactly what they wanted while I’ve spent mine being used to the fact that I irritate my own family. And the worst part is, I don’t even know what to do to change things. Apart from everyone my father has hired for me, I never sat back lazily. I always train, day and night. I take dangerous risks just to force the power out of me but it’s all to no avail. I get up slowly and go on my knees. “Forgive me father. Forgive me mother. I promise to do better next year.” “Didnt you make the same promise last year? And the year before that?” My brother cuts in. “Exactly,” my father says. “And it means this little stunt of yours…it won't work anymore.” Embarrassment cloaks me like a shield. My father continues. “And do you know what this means?” I stare silently. “While your brother continues to make us proud at the academy…we’ll have to get you in.” I squint. “But I failed.” “You did.” “So…?” He holds my gaze intently. “We’ll have to grease the right hands.” For a moment, I don’t understand but as the smile on my brother's face disappears, I quickly pick up on what my father means and my face burns. “Wait, You mean…” “Yes, Kai. We’ll pay to get you into the academy.” “What? You can’t do that.” I jump up. “Bribery? It’s a death sentence for me, I’ll never be welcomed.” “And you should have thought about that before deciding to be a failure,” my mother cuts in, staring me down. “This conversation is over. Now, go pack your bags. You’re leaving with your brother.” I stumble, losing air for a moment because I know one thing for certain. My life is about to be over.Latest Chapter
The Dungeon Expedition
Kai’s POV“Congratulations to the students who placed among the winners today.”A cheer explodes through the arena. I’m standing alone as Aelia left after that little charade I played with Orin. A hand grabs my shoulder from behind, I turn and see Jafser. “You did it!”I stare, mumbling. “Thank you.”The instructor continues. “Although we have only one spectacular team, groups with two points and above have earned an additional privilege.”“A privilege?” someone whispers. The arena immediately becomes quieter as everyone stares questioningly. The instructor smiles knowingly. “For the next three days, these students will participate in a controlled dungeon expedition.”Before I can make sense of what he said, the arena explodes again, much louder this time.I stare at Jafser as he jumps around excitedly. What in the hell is going on?He looks at me, noticing my confusion. “What? Don’t tell me you don’t know what he means?”“If I did, I’m certain you would see it on my face.”His eyes w
Winners
Kai’s POVWe step onto our own arena where five creatures are already waiting in cages. The instructor raises his hand—a sign that we should be ready. .“Stay behind me,” I say to her before I can stop myself.“Absolutely not.” Her reply catches me off guard. I throw her a look. “I’m only looking out for you.”“And I don’t remember asking.”I scoff and look away. “Fine. Do whatever you want.” I draw my weapon.“Yeah, you too. And try not to die.”“Maybe you should tell that to the monster. I don’t know if you missed it, but it’s me whoever everyone is scared of, not the monster.” I tighten my grip on my sword. She rolls her eyes. “Proud much.”The bell rings and we charge at the release creature. I barely blink before she gets to him and slash through him swiftly. A flash of blue magic shoots into its chest and It stumbles backward.I’m so surprised that I take a moment to marvel at her, but she doesn’t stop. “Are you planning to fight,” she looks over her shoulder, “or just stand t
Making Partners
Aelia’s POVThe instructor drops a stack of papers onto his desk. “You know the drill, Partners, now.”Everyone scatters around, searching for their favorite persons to partner up with. The academy has no problemswith you working with a friend as long as you bring results. “I chose her first.”“No, I did. She’s my friend.”I quietly watch as they argue amongst themselves. Then I turn toward him. He’s still sitting alone. Nobody has approached him and they won’t. Yes, they want to be connected to him but for something like this, they’re too uncertain and terrified of him to choose him as a partner. Void magic? What if they try to attack a monster and their partner swallows their magic instead. “Kai,” the instructor calls. “You need a partner.”He doesn’t even look up. “No. I’ll work alone.”“You can’t. Everyone gets a partner because the assignment requires it.”He locks his jaw and looks around the room but he quickly sees it’s useless. Everyone is physically hiding from him.He t
The Tables Have Turned
Kai's POV: As early as the next day, I’m already summoned to the teachers office. “Kai Blackwell, do you know why you’re here today?”I look at them. “Yes. I used the void magic.”The headmaster seems to flinch. “And do you know it is considered a forbidden magic?”“Not to the best of my knowledge. I haven’t been studying well, that's why I’ve been failing.” It’s a lie but that’s what they get. The man looks amused for a moment. “Okay. You do know it is considered impossible too?”“So I’ve heard.”“So how did a failing student manage to do that?”“I don’t know, sir. It just happened to me. I have no control over what magic comes out of me.”His eyes darken at me. “Fine. You may leave.”As I walk to class, I notice a change in the hallway. Unlike when I first came when they all had something to laugh about, it is quieter now.“That’s him,” one whispers. “Wait, the student-mage with the void power?”“Yes. He absorbed a D-Rank spell.”“That’s impossible.”“I saw it. The fire literall
THE ANNUAL CONTEST
Kai’s POVI walk into the arena of their annual contest, every part of me filled with venom for those people that threw me down there. Someone points to me, “He’s alive. How is that possible?” Every eyes settle on me with shock, including Orin and his goons. I’m not surprised by their reaction. Even me, I’m still surprised by how I got out. All I did was touch the lock and it opened. Vazaroth told me to lock after. One thing is certain, if he wanted to leave, he would have. Orin and his goons laugh as they walk towards me?“You’re alive? I thought the dungeon would kill you for sure,” one says.“He probably crawled out,” another adds.Unlike them, Orin doesn’t look the least bit calm. He follows me until I stop in front of the registration board.“What are you doing here?” I can sense some kind of nervousness from him. He really didn’t expect me to make it out alive. He left me for dead. I don’t answer him and just pick up the marker to write my name.“Are you deaf? I said what do y
Vazaroth, the demon god.
Kai’s POVI clutch my chest, unable to breathe. Those eyes, I know them. I’ve seen them before. It wasn’t in person but in books and paintings. My heart pounds harder.“No…”The creature gives me a small smile. “You know who I am?”My mouth goes dry. I want to get up and run but I know it’s useless. My legs are basically paralyzed from shock. “No. That’s impossible.”Its smile disappears. “Impossible? Why is that?”I shake my head. “You’re not supposed to be here.”It lets out a quiet laugh, the sound echoing throughout the dungeon. “Where did they tell you they kept me?”I don’t answer but I know what he means because I know who he is. The horns, the black skin covered with binding markings, the huge wings folded behind his back and the chains wrapped around his body. There is no mistaking it.He’s Vazaroth, the demon god. The first and most powerful ruler of the demons. Everyone in the kingdom knows about him and his long list of crimes.Eight hundred years ago, he had supposedly
