The MacMillan
"No movement, lieutenant."Atlas winced and looked up from the dull blade he was sharpening, against something he'd rather not say. This was how it had always started, with those exact words from a reluctant man.Four of his men were laid in the snow, rifles aimed northward at the withered forest, because Atlas believed certain doom would approach from there."Stay sharp, it's coming," Atlas said, vesting up as he did.It would have been easier for them to spot whatever abomination was trudging through the snow towards them if they had scopes, but sadly, the only person who could make them had died a long time ago. Many of these men didn't even know such a man had existed. Atlas huffed and strained his lips, whistling with as much force as he could muster, into the distance. A few seconds later, he received a whistle in return, confirming that the second team were already in place. The last three times, they had been where they were, but it didn't change anything. This time it wouldn

"No movement, lieutenant."Atlas flinched, unable to recall even his name– but for a brief moment. He looked up from the human skull he was using to sharpen his blade and stared at who had spoken. It was Matthew, and not Gerrard, so this wasn't the time the MacMillan drew near. That would be almost two days from now.Luckily."That's good, keep at it," he said, trying not to sound too commanding, because he was dealing with huge disdain here. But for the orders of Achilles, none of them would accept a stranger as their lieutenant. Atlas stood and walked towards the shabby hut at the edge of the kingdom's border. It was originally a war room for the army of this kingdom, but like most things, they were no more. Now, it was a sort of haven for Atlas, his home. He got in and took a pen and his diary, or LOG book as he preferred it to be called, and began scribbling. The day was coming to an end, and he would need to be up all night as a sentry, so he'd better not waste this chance."LOG
Long Night
Achilles laughed wildly again at Atlas' expression. Hope had always been able to inspire temporary fear, and rightly so:Achilles had always feared the hopeful. Because hope was a poison, and disease rotting the insides of its believers."How are you sure?" Atlas asked Hope."I'm not, I just believ–"Atlas rolled his eyes. "That's enough."Achilles tried to laugh again, but a thunderous dry cough took its place. As he coughed, thin, black veins revealed themselves around his body, all seemingly reaching for his neck. His eyes grew sunken, and he lay back into bed, growing quiet and unmoving.Atlas watched with grimness, pitying the human giant."Let's go," he said to Hope, walking out of the room. "Valor, I intend to take a little out of your treasury, for upkeep purposes.""Uhhhh...you, thief..." stirred Achilles' groggy voice.Atlas nodded and shut the door behind him, setting his mind on the task at hand as he moved. The castle itself was looking sick, with dried grass, cracked wal
Promising Signs
The sun didn't drop below the horizon, even though it was afraid of what lay beyond the Vidirian forest, so it hid itself behind dark clouds, and in typical magician fashion, disappeared. And unfortunately so. Its rays were the only thing that kept some semblance of warmth alive, and without it, hypothermia and frostbite ruled the hours until its next appearance.Atlas walked to the ridge and aimed. For a few seconds, he actually convinced himself that he was scouting for the MacMillan, but the truth slipped through the wall of discipline. The MacMillan wasn't going to arrive, not today, not tomorrow, and apart from that behemoth, there was no immediate threat worth keeping him awake all night– no! That was a lie; even butterflies could kill nowadays. But he remained awake. The MacMillan had not arrived because they kept watch until it did; if he decided to sleep and not do what was to be done, he could change the forthcoming events and get them all slaughtered.Besides, the Xhosa mem
Small Preparations
It didn't have anything to do with the preparations; it had to do with something greater.Atlas blinked to ensure that he wasn't seeing through the lens of sleep deprivation. He wasn't.A few metres away, certain patches of snow looked less bright, like the beams of light couldn't shower upon it adequately enough. He had seen this phenomenon before, and after that, he saw the death of over four thousand men."Good morning, lieutenant," said Kael, passing by.He had always been quick to accept Atlas' presence, no matter how awkward and secluded it tends to become over Logs."Morning," Atlas replied, bitterness underneath the greeting.Kael was his cousin, although not biologically, since he had been adopted by Atlas' uncle when he was six. Six was a long time ago, and Kael didn't remember him from that past. In less than twenty-four hours, the MacMillan would put their expertise to the test, so now was a perfect time to prep his fighting gear and unwind his muscles with a dull spar.
Full Circle
He stood and straightened his clothes. It was the same gear today, but a different strategy. And by Hope's grace, a different outcome. He stared into the distance, and not long after, the first bullet fired.Gerrard reset. Like the last five times, he had missed again.'I'm beginning to wonder if he actually made this group by his merit.'The MacMillan tore through the mist as it rushed forward, not for the traveller that had supposedly seen it, but for the one that the cosmos wished to break.Atlas.Soon, it entered the rigged zone, and Atlas took a deep breath, then jumped off the ridge to meet it.His dagger swung out the moment he landed, saving his neck from the ferocious slap across. He skidded back and immediately whistled, inviting the rest of the melee fighters into the fray.Originally, the plan had been for them to stay hidden until the beast was lured their way, but that hadn't worked, so he'd try something different.Shock and awe!Figures clad in snow camouflage darted o
All In!
Four steps back and this would be over; the monster would be under the ridge, and he could go home and record the first win he would have had in about a month. The MacMillan was looking ragged, but ever ferocious. But it was basically harmless at this point. Its species didn't grow claws on their paws and only had stubby glorified fingernails. They relied on their heavy biting power to hunt enemies, and unfortunately for it, it no longer had a functioning jaw. That said, it could still break more than break their bones with a single pound if they got sloppy. They wouldn't, but errors were bound to happen at some point, and Atlas would like for the battle to be over before that happened."All in!" he roared, signalling the terrain control team to surface– from seemingly nowhere– and join the fight. The MacMillan swiped and threw someone a few feet in the air; it stomped and caught Kael's hand under its press, fracturing it; it roared and spluttered unholy spit onto their faces, but Atl
To Think Like A Beast
Atlas had a heart attack, a stroke and a seizure all at once. He had lived in the slums once, and it wasn't a good experience. "Fear not, lieutenant. We have employed the best of currently available human resources and services to see that it is refurbished to greater splendor in good time," said Achilles' pupil. The room went quiet and motionless. No one here knew how to translate bullshit to regular English.'What a sesquipedalian.'Atlas shrugged off his pain and took the IV needle out of his hand, standing up even when he had been told to rest.He needed to get back home, for obvious reasons. As he attempted to walk out, he suddenly remembered, and then turned. "Since when did the hospital become a graveyard?""It isn't," replied someone Atlas had not cared to know who they were."So why did I have to wake up next to a dead person?""Her death was sudden. We haven't been able to conduct the ceremonies required of us before burying her," the young man replied."Ceremonies? Who is
Scent of Blood
Matthew sighed and took in the horrible scenery.Nothing was wrong with the clean snow, but that in itself was a problem.Clean and flat snow usually meant running water underneath, and on this glass-like surface, it told that the thickness was mere inches, maybe less than ten.If things went south and they had to fight, being careful not to break the ice would be a bigger foe than the enemy. So with that conclusion, he decided to embark on his journey with very few people. It would have been all Xhosa, but Matthew would never subject his colleagues to carrying the cargo, so he made spaces for a dozen kingdom guards. The former crew that had been tasked with bringing in the import had died somewhere around the old railways. That was where the last messenger hawk had come from, but due to the distance in between, the crew must have been at a different location when they received the message.Still, they wouldn't be too far off, considering that the hawk could travel the distance in a
Plantation
He didn't smell blood in an ominous sense, or due to his belief that someone or something had died somewhere close...he actually smelled blood. But it could just have been the boar that the kingdom guards had caught. Though he didn't buy that.He sighed and cleared his mind of the thought as he ran down. If someone had been looking from afar, they would have seen two shadows moving at pace with the wind. One dimly lit, and the other following the path of the first. The plantation was close to the station, and since cargo concerning its upkeep usually came in through there, its location had been a matter of convenience.Matthew and the other Xhosa member reached the walls confining it soon after they set out with blitzing speed. The first thing that caught his attention was the smell of more blood. And truly, smeared along the wall were valleys of cold red blood. Most of it had dried, but by the looks of things, the being that had been slain to produce this was slain quite recently.M
