Lucas left the terrace before the second tissue was dry.He paid for the coffee he had not touched, took the back stairs, and slipped out through the alley behind the shop. Two turns later he was on a bus heading north, cap pulled low, watching the city slide by in the window. His phone buzzed twice in his pocket. He let it.Where are you, Lucas? They say they won't hurt me if you come. She had cried on cue and stopped on cue. What he could not shake was the small detail of the tissue. Not the tears, he had seen her cry whenever it suited her for five years. It was the care she took afterwards, checking her reflection in the car window. Like an actress between takes.Whether the men were really threatening her hardly mattered. If they were, Richard had put his own daughter in that car. If they were not, she had agreed to play the victim. Either way, she had stood on that pavement and chosen the Fords. He got off two stops early and walked the rest. The warehouse gate looked the same a

The man who stepped out of the sedan was the one with the scar through his eyebrow. He took his time about it. He shut the door gently, as if the car belonged to someone he respected, and came across the gravel with his hands loose at his sides. Up close he was bigger than he had looked in the car park, wide through the chest and thick in the wrists, but his face stayed friendly. That was the unsettling part. He wore the expression of a man arriving at a barbecue."Mr. Grey," he said. "Dale Kessler. We spoke.""We did.""You missed our appointment.""I was told noon, at the bank on Dunmore Street. I was there." It was a lie, but a small one, and Lucas delivered it without blinking. "I waited an hour. Nobody came to the door."Kessler tilted his head. Behind him, Vanessa had gone very still, her sleeve pulled down over her wrist, her eyes fixed on the ground. The man with the gum, Pike, had climbed out of the passenger side and was leaning on the bonnet again, watching with mild intere

Lucas did not read the card a third time. He set it face down on the desk, picked up the flashlight, and walked the building. The gate chain was untouched. The fence was sound. The side door into the loading bay turned under his key without a sound, and when he knelt and shone the light into the keyhole, the brass inside was dull and clean. No scratches. No fresh bright metal. Nobody had picked this lock. Somebody had opened it with a key.He had two sets, one in his pocket and one in the desk drawer, and both were still in his hands. That left a third.Gary Pruitt had smiled very widely when he handed over the keys. Lucas turned that smile over in his mind and decided he did not have time to be angry about it. Anger was a luxury for people with a safe place to sleep. He sat on the iron stairs and thought about the card instead. The front was Kessler's work, careful and polite, a coat folded like a gift. It said we can walk in whenever we like. But the scrawl on the back belonged to a

Lucas spent Wednesday trying to work out what counted as proof. It was a strange thing to be asked for. A man could prove he owned a car, or a house, or a debt. But proving you were not something meant handing over an absence, and nobody had ever written a receipt for that.He sat in the back booth of an all night diner with a notebook and a cup of coffee going cold, and made a list. The card Kessler had left on the mattress, with its two handwritings. The notebook of Ford debts, fifty eight thousand dollars in his own small neat hand. The article about the Meridian Continuity Program, which he printed at the library for ten cents a page. A description of the T stitched on Kessler's sleeve.Four items. They made a thin pile. There was a fifth thing, the real thing, and he turned it over for a long time. A river bridge, nine days, forty people and a stack of bad rifles. He could say it and watch her face while he did. But the bridge had not happened yet, and a man who knew about it ahe
