Chapter 17:A Deal Written in Suspicion
Lucas spent Wednesday trying to work out what counted as proof. It was a strange thing to be asked for. A man could prove he owned a car, or a house, or a debt. But proving you were not something meant handing over an absence, and nobody had ever written a receipt for that.He sat in the back booth of an all night diner with a notebook and a cup of coffee going cold, and made a list. The card Kessler had left on the mattress, with its two handwritings. The notebook of Ford debts, fifty eight thousand dollars in his own small neat hand. The article about the Meridian Continuity Program, which he printed at the library for ten cents a page. A description of the T stitched on Kessler's sleeve.Four items. They made a thin pile. There was a fifth thing, the real thing, and he turned it over for a long time. A river bridge, nine days, forty people and a stack of bad rifles. He could say it and watch her face while he did. But the bridge had not happened yet, and a man who knew about it ahe
Chapter 16: Mara Quinn Does Not Trust Free Things
The message took Lucas twenty minutes to write and eleven words to send.He bought the phone at a gas station on the way back from Dolan's, a cheap prepaid thing in a plastic shell, twenty two dollars cash, no name asked. He sat on a curb beside a rack of firewood and typed, deleted, and typed again until the words said as little as possible.Dolan's yard. Last two generators. We should talk about fuel. The reply arrived before he had put the phone down.Who gave you this number? He thought about lying. Then he pictured the card on the corkboard, the hard neat capitals of someone who filled in forms as if an auditor might read them years later, and decided the truth would last longer.Your card. I took it off Dolan's board.Nothing came for a full minute. Then: Truck stop, northern highway, mile 31. Seven tomorrow. Alone. If I see anyone else, I leave. That night he slept in three different places. A laundromat bench until closing. The back booth of an all night diner. A bus shelter n
Chapter 15: Water, Fuel, and Generators
Lucas did not read the card a third time. He set it face down on the desk, picked up the flashlight, and walked the building. The gate chain was untouched. The fence was sound. The side door into the loading bay turned under his key without a sound, and when he knelt and shone the light into the keyhole, the brass inside was dull and clean. No scratches. No fresh bright metal. Nobody had picked this lock. Somebody had opened it with a key.He had two sets, one in his pocket and one in the desk drawer, and both were still in his hands. That left a third.Gary Pruitt had smiled very widely when he handed over the keys. Lucas turned that smile over in his mind and decided he did not have time to be angry about it. Anger was a luxury for people with a safe place to sleep. He sat on the iron stairs and thought about the card instead. The front was Kessler's work, careful and polite, a coat folded like a gift. It said we can walk in whenever we like. But the scrawl on the back belonged to a
Chapter 14: Forty Pallets
Brandt kept his word, and that surprised Lucas more than it should have. The first truck rolled through the gate at six on Monday morning, a battered box lorry with a cracked windscreen and a forklift chained to its flatbed. A second came ten minutes behind it. Brandt rode in the cab of the first, chewing his usual toothpick, and he climbed down slowly, like a man whose knees had opinions."Forty pallets," he said. "Count them if you like.""I will.""Figured." Brandt nodded at the road. "Your friends in the grey car. They gone?""For now.""Hm." He did not push it. He just watched his two drivers back the trucks up to the loading dock, and when the first pallet came off, a shrink wrapped tower of rice sacks nearly as tall as a man, he said quietly, "Whatever you've got yourself into, kid, I'd rather not hear about it. But my watch is on the line and I'd like you alive on the sixth.""So would I."It took three hours to unload. The forklift whined across the concrete, the drivers swor
Chapter 13: The Debt the Fords Forgot
The man who stepped out of the sedan was the one with the scar through his eyebrow. He took his time about it. He shut the door gently, as if the car belonged to someone he respected, and came across the gravel with his hands loose at his sides. Up close he was bigger than he had looked in the car park, wide through the chest and thick in the wrists, but his face stayed friendly. That was the unsettling part. He wore the expression of a man arriving at a barbecue."Mr. Grey," he said. "Dale Kessler. We spoke.""We did.""You missed our appointment.""I was told noon, at the bank on Dunmore Street. I was there." It was a lie, but a small one, and Lucas delivered it without blinking. "I waited an hour. Nobody came to the door."Kessler tilted his head. Behind him, Vanessa had gone very still, her sleeve pulled down over her wrist, her eyes fixed on the ground. The man with the gum, Pike, had climbed out of the passenger side and was leaning on the bonnet again, watching with mild intere
Chapter 12: Vanessa Comes Knocking
Brandt did not ask a second question. He looked at the sedan for three more seconds, then at Lucas, then spat his toothpick into the weeds. "Not mine," he said. "And I'd rather not be here when it becomes yours."Gary was already walking toward the hatchback, keys jingling, saying something about a four o'clock showing across town. They left in a hurry, the hatchback bouncing over the ruts, Brandt's heavy face turned away from the window. Lucas stood at the gate until the dust settled. Then he pulled the chain through, snapped the padlock shut, and walked back toward the building without looking at the road.Inside, he leaned against the cold wall of the loading bay and closed his eyes. They had followed Gary, or they had followed him. But he had spent three days doubling back, changing buses, cutting through alleys. Nobody had followed him. So how?His phone was warm in his pocket. He took it out and looked at it. Cracked corner, scratched screen, the ordinary little rectangle that h
