Chapter 001: Nothing in the Crystal
The crystal stayed dark.Ethan Vale kept his palm flat on it anyway. The stone was cold and smooth, and it hummed against his skin the way it had hummed for every other person in the hall. For them it had lit up. Red for fire. Blue for water. A boy from the lower district had made it flicker green and then cried right there on the platform.Ethan's crystal did nothing."Remove your hand," the examiner said."One more minute. Please.""You've had six."Examiner Brandt was a thin man with ink on his cuffs. He didn't sound cruel, and that was worse. He sounded bored. He tapped the slate on his arm twice and read from it. "Ethan Vale, age twenty. Final examination. No awakening detected." He glanced up at the clerk. "Record him as null."Someone in the gallery laughed. Then a lot of people did.The Royal Awakening Tower had a hall built to carry sound, so families in the upper rows could hear every result. Ethan used to think that was a kind idea. Today every laugh arrived clean and sharp
Chapter 002: The First Price
The world stopped. It didn't slow down. Between one heartbeat and the next, the teeth in front of Ethan's face froze a hand's width from his throat. The tower bell dragged into a single low note and hung there. Dust floated in the air like flour. The creature's breath, which had been hot on his cheek, was gone.Ethan couldn't move. He could think, which surprised him.A pale square opened in the air in front of his eyes. White letters sat inside it, sharp and clean.[Host detected. Name: Ethan Vale. Age: 20. Magic affinity: None. Compatibility: Complete.]"Complete," Ethan said. His mouth didn't move, but the word went out somewhere anyway. "I've got nothing in me. The crystal said so. The whole hall heard it."[The crystal measures magic. This system does not use magic.]"Why me? There were a thousand people in that hall."[Query restricted.]"Restricted by who?"[Query restricted.]"That's not an answer, either."[Time is limited. Thirty seconds remain before the target resumes. Chapter 003: What the Monster Left
"Absorb," Ethan said.He said it out loud, because thinking it felt too small.[Absorption requires understanding. Observe holds partial data on this target. Partial absorption will proceed.][Warning: every absorbed source leaves a trace. Trace strength depends on how well the source is understood. Proceed?]"What kind of trace?"[Unknown until absorbed.]Of course it was. Above him the winch chain squealed, and lantern light jumped across the ceiling in long yellow strips. Somebody swore. Boots hit stone."Proceed."The corpse lit from the inside. Cracks of purple ran across the black hide like frost spreading on a window. Then the whole body came apart. It didn't break into pieces. It broke into light, a slow bright cloud that lifted off the floor and sank into Ethan's chest, straight through his torn shirt. It was cold. It tasted like copper. The weight on his legs was gone.[Skill acquired: Stalker's Instinct (Common). Detects the breath of living creatures within fifteen meters.
Chapter 004: The Inspector
Ethan opened his mouth to answer and found he didn't have one."I don't know," he said. "It's always been that way. Since before I was old enough to test.""Who told you it was a rule?""My uncle. Garrick." Saying the name left a bad taste. "He said the Crown ordered it. For dignity. So nobody gets embarrassed in front of their family."Rhea repeated it under her breath. The Crown ordered it. Her jaw worked as if she were chewing something tough."Grey coat," she said. "Third row. Left before the end.""You noticed.""I notice a lot of things. It's most of the job." She wiped her palms on her trousers. They were shaking a little, which he hadn't expected from someone with Level 28 floating next to her name. "Okay. Stay quiet about that for now. The healer's coming. After that, a few people are going to ask you questions, and I don't want you to answer them like you're answering me.""How should I answer?""Slowly."The healer turned out to be an old man named Hollis with huge hands an
Chapter 005: Eviction Notice
Outside, the afternoon had gone grey. The front steps of the Royal Awakening Tower were packed with people who had run out of the building and didn't know where to go next. Nobles stood in tight circles, talking loudly about nothing. Clerks clutched ledgers to their chests. Guards had strung a rope across the plaza, and behind it the families of the candidates pressed forward, all asking the same question.Rhea walked through them like a plow through frozen ground. Ethan stayed close behind her.Heads turned. He felt it before he saw it. A null with blood down his shirt and a Captain's cloak bandage on his arm, walking out of a tower that was supposed to be on fire. People nudged each other. A woman whispered something to her husband, and the husband said, "No. Can't be.""Is that Vale?"The voice came from the left, bright and pleased. Dorian Hale leaned on the rope with a few of his friends beside him, fire mark glowing on his wrist like a coal. "He's alive! The monster must have ha
Chapter 006: Candle Lane
Ethan didn't wait for dawn.He packed in the dark, fast and quiet. His mother's recipe book went into a canvas bag, with the flower inside it. Her ring went on a cord around his neck. Two shirts, a knife from the kitchen drawer, the heel of the bread. The band stayed in its sock at the bottom of the bag. He left the rest on the shelves. There wasn't much, and none of it was his anyway. Then he stood very still at the window and let Stalker's Instinct open. The street below was empty, as far as his eyes could tell. His other sense said otherwise. Two breaths, down at the corner, near the well. They were slow and patient. Neither of them moved in the twenty minutes he stood there. Nobody sleeps that still. One was by the wall. The other was in the shadow of the baker's awning, across from his door.Wardens, he thought. Or Garrick's people. Same thing, maybe. He glanced at the silver token on the table. It sat in a square of moonlight, small and bright, like an eye.If it was a tracker,
Chapter 007: The Quiet Box
The hum was low at first. A bee trapped in a jar. Then it climbed. The band rattled on the table, a small angry tremble, and the lamp flame leaned toward it. The pear skin curled. Dust jumped off the nearest scroll."Move," Tomas said. He was already on his feet, which for a man his age was fast. "Don't touch it. Don't look at it. Bring your bag.""Look at it? Why?""Because I don't know what it's listening to."Ethan looked anyway. He couldn't help it. The system window slid open over the shaking metal.[Binding Collar (fragment). Link status: ACTIVE. Linked key: 1. Direction: north-east. Distance: 3.1 km.]North-east. Three kilometers. He worked it out on the fingers of his mind, the way he used to work out the way home from the academy. Past the river. Past the grain market. Up the long hill."The Ironkeep," he said, before he could stop himself. "The Wardens' hall."Tomas's face went the color of candle wax. He didn't ask how Ethan knew. The old man dragged a shelf stool across th
Chapter 008: The Drains
Ethan woke on a cot in a cellar that smelled of damp paper.A strip of grey light came through a vent near the ceiling. Somewhere above him a floorboard creaked, then another. He lay still for a few seconds and let Stalker's Instinct slide out. One breath upstairs, slow and old. No one else within fifteen meters.Good. His arm ached, his stomach growled, and he'd slept maybe three hours. But he was alive, and nobody had come through the door.Tomas was at the table with the water-warped book open in front of him and four candle stubs burned to nothing. His eyes were red. He hadn't slept at all."There's bread," he said, without looking up. "And cheese. The cheese is older than you, so be gentle."Ethan ate. The Hunger was quiet this morning, a low animal grumble in the back of his head. He cut the bread into slices and the cheese into thin curls and chewed slowly, to keep the grumble down."Find anything?""A great deal. Most of it I don't like." Tomas rubbed his eyes under the lens.
Chapter 009: Mother of the Sump
It came around the bend slowly, and it filled the tunnel from wall to wall.Ethan raised the lantern. Yellow light slid across something wet and pale, glistening like boiled fat. A body as long as a farm cart, soft and ridged, dragging itself forward on a smear of its own slime. No eyes. No face he could find, just a puckered hole at the front, wide as a barrel, ringed with rows of gray teeth.[Sump Slug (Mother). Rank: D. Vitality: 520. Weakness: heat. Attacks: acid spit, crush. Understanding: 12%.]"Okay," Ethan whispered. "No. Absolutely not."He was Level 2. He had a hook-knife the length of his hand. He was standing in a pool of dead rats with a hole in his shoulder, and the thing coming toward him weighed more than the tannery. The gnawers were running too. He saw them now, streaming up the walls and over the ceiling, away from the thing in the dark. Even the rats were afraid of it.He backed up one step. His boot slipped in the muck. The Slug stopped. The hole at the front quiv
Chapter 010: Nine Names
Ethan looked up at her, blinking against the light. He tried to say something clever. What came out was a cough, long and wet, that bent him over the ladder. Smoke came with it, and a taste like burned hair."Give me your hand," Rhea said."I'm fine.""You're gray. Give me your hand."She hauled him out of the hatch one-armed, as if he weighed nothing, and set him down against the back wall of the tannery. The alley behind it was narrow and dim, hung with drying hides. It stank, but nobody lived there. Nobody would come.Rhea crouched in front of him and took in the whole of it. The ruined trouser leg. The blistered skin. The shoulder, the blood, the burn marks on his hands. Her face didn't move, but her jaw did."Acid," she said."Slug.""A Sump Slug." She said it flatly, like a person reciting a bad address. "In the city drains. Level 2s don't solo those. Level 12s don't solo those.""I'm not sure what level I was," Ethan said."Right." She pulled a small tin from her belt, popped t
