Bai Lu did not take him home. She took him to a noodle shop - small, warm, loud with the sound of a television nobody was watching. An old woman behind the counter took one look at Lin Fan and pushed two bowls across without being asked. Bai Lu paid. They sat in the corner booth, and the broth steamed between them, and neither of them spoke.Lin Fan ate. Of course he was hungry - this body was a bird that had been squeezed. And eating was useful. So he ate, and watched her over the rim of the bowl. She watched him back."You're not going to ask me anything," she said at last."I'm deciding which question is worth asking.""Ask the right one and I might answer it."He set the bowl down."Who do you think I am?"Her chopsticks stopped halfway to her mouth. Something moved behind her eyes - relief, maybe. Or fear. In his experience they were usually the same thing wearing different coats."Not here," she said. "Not yet.""Why not?""Because there are people in this city who would burn th

The letter came at dawn, and it came by hand.Lin Fan heard the knock from the cot in the closet he slept in.He had not slept. He had spent the night sitting cross-legged with his back to the wall, feeling out the shape of the lid he had found in his own core, and he had learned three things: that the seal was old beyond reckoning, that it had been fitted by someone who knew exactly what they were doing, and that it was, at one point along its edge, not quite flush. One point. He heard the front door, and a man's voice, and then a silence that lasted long enough to be interesting. When he came out, his aunt was standing in the middle of the kitchen holding an envelope with both hands, and his father was out of his chair for the first time in eleven years before eight i

A-rank. The stamp of it sat in him the way a fire sits in a wall - banked, invisible, and absolutely present. He had not offered Lin Fan a chair."Do you know," Director Wen said, "what happens to a reading like yours if it leaves this building?""I imagine people would ask questions.""People would start a war." The Director set both hands flat on the desk. "The reading was invalid. The instrument is old, and it is overdue for maintenance, and there were eleven other irregularities filed this month. That is what the record will say. That is what the city will believe, because I will sign it, and the Bureau does not lie." He paused. "Twice."Lin Fan said nothing."That is the official versio
