Chapter 0 — The Dead Man Opened His Eyes
The blade touched Marco's throat just as he realized he was supposed to be dead.“Hold still,” the woman above him whispered. “I would hate to cut your head off twice.”Marco froze. He had several questions, beginning with why a woman was threatening to decapitate him and ending with how anyone could kill the same person twice.Unfortunately, the cold steel resting against his neck suggested that asking those questions in the wrong order might shorten his remaining lifespan.Slowly, he opened his eyes.A blood-red moon stared down through a shattered ceiling, bathing the ruined chamber in an eerie crimson glow.Black candles floated above the floor without flames, their charred wicks trailing wisps of smoke. Beneath Marco's back lay a stone altar covered in glowing symbols, and the air smelled of burnt flesh, iron, and something unpleasantly sweet. Two women stood over him. They possessed the same silver hair, the same black horns curling backward from their temples, and the same unna
Chapter 1 — The Dead Man Opened His Eyes
Davea gave a dismissive snort. “I know what happened. You died.”“Apparently, I disagree.”“Your disagreement is about to become irrelevant.”“Look at the circle.”Neither woman moved at first, and Marco wondered whether he had finally pushed his luck too far. He swallowed his fear and continued before Davea could decide that silencing him permanently was the simplest solution.“I'm not saying you should trust me. You'd have to be spectacularly stupid to do that. I'm saying something is happening here, and you don't understand it any better than I do.”Davea's eyes narrowed as she studied him, and for the first time since he had awakened, Marco felt that he had managed to capture her attention. It wasn't sympathy, and it certainly wasn't trust, but it was something he could work with.“You killed the man who owned this body. Fine,” he continued, gesturing weakly toward the blood covering his chest. “But now I'm here, and I'm bleeding all over your expensive-looking furniture. If you k
Chapter 2 — Three Seconds to Live
The voice inside Marco’s head sounded exactly like his own voice would have sounded if it had spent a thousand years buried beneath the earth.Move aside, little thief. You’ve been sitting in my body long enough.Marco’s blood turned cold, but he forced himself not to look beneath the altar. Whatever was trapped down there had already demonstrated that it could speak directly into his mind. He had no intention of giving it the satisfaction of watching him panic.Unfortunately, the two demonesses standing over him seemed determined to make that difficult.Davea raised her sword toward the ceiling, where cracks of crimson light spread across the ancient stone. Devana backed away from the altar, her golden eyes fixed on the symbols that were rapidly turning black.“Get away from him,” Devana ordered.Marco stared at her. “I would love to. Unfortunately, I seem to be lying on a table designed by someone who hated furniture and human comfort.”“Move, then!”“I would also love to do that, b
Chapter 2 — Three Seconds to Live A
Marco's fingers locked around it as a violent current surged through his arm. He felt something cold race beneath his skin, followed by a pressure behind his eyes that made the entire chamber seem to tilt sideways. The symbols around his left hand flared white. The next heartbeat arrived.Instead of travelling outward toward the sealed door, the dark energy struck the clasp and reversed direction. It rushed through the exposed channels, circled the altar, and plunged into the broken runes on the opposite side. The entire chamber erupted in crimson light.Davea shouted something that Marco couldn't hear. Devana threw up both hands, forming a shimmering golden barrier just as the energy exploded outward. The blast hurled Marco off the altar. He struck the floor shoulder-first, rolled across the stone, and crashed against the base of a pillar. His lungs emptied in a painful rush, and for several seconds he could not draw enough breath to speak.Above him, the altar groaned.A section of
Chapter 3 — The World's Worst Negotiation
Marco had always believed that meeting his own double would be an unsettling experience. He had imagined awkward introductions, uncomfortable questions about their childhoods, and perhaps a few jokes about who had the better hairstyle. He had never imagined meeting his double while lying half-dead in a demon's basement, with a sword pointed at his chest and a magical corpse accusing him of breaking a seal. The stranger standing in the doorway wore Marco's borrowed face, down to the faint scar beneath his left eye. His dark coat hung loosely from his shoulders, and black veins crawled beneath his pale skin like ink spreading through water. Behind him, the darkness seemed to breathe.“You were supposed to stay dead,” the stranger repeated, staring directly at Marco. “Now you've broken the seal, and it knows where to find us.”Marco swallowed and glanced at Davea. “Just to clarify, when you said you killed the original owner of this body, you were referring to someone who might have know
Chapter 3 — The World's Worst Negotiation B
Davea stared at him as though he had suggested adopting a poisonous snake. “You are defending a thing that threatened us.”“I'm defending the possibility of asking questions before we start destroying things. It's a radical idea, I know.”“You have nothing to offer us,” Davea said. “You are a confused human occupying a dead man's body.”Marco nodded solemnly. “You have information.”“You have confusion.”“I have an impressive amount of confusion. Some of it might be useful.”Devana's lips twitched. She moved closer to Marco, her golden eyes narrowing with interest. “And what do you want in return?”Marco glanced at Devana's sword, then at the fading construct, and finally at the altar where he had nearly died.“To remain alive.”Devana regarded him for a moment. “How disappointingly ordinary.”“I'm new here. Give me time to develop more ambitious goals.”Davea laughed, although there was no warmth in the sound. “You believe you can negotiate with demons?”“I believe that threatening m
Chapter 4 — A Name That Isn't Mine
Marco had discovered three important facts about his new life.First, death was apparently not a permanent condition.Second, making a deal with demons was considerably easier than convincing them to like him.And third, whenever he thought his situation could not possibly get worse, the universe treated that thought as a personal challenge. He stood beside the damaged altar while Devana examined the golden covenant mark on his wrist. Devana watched from a short distance away, her arms crossed over her chest and her expression suggesting that she regretted every decision that had allowed him to remain alive. The strange heartbeat beneath the floor had stopped, but Marco could still feel its echo in his ribs.“Are we certain that thing is gone?” he asked, glancing toward the sealed doorway.“No,” Devana replied.Marco turned to her. “You could have pretended to think about the answer first.”“I could have, but lying would not make you safer.”“I'm beginning to appreciate your honesty.
Chapter 4 — A Name That Isn't Mine B
Marco continued, his voice growing quieter as the meaning became clear. “It was designed to prevent something from leaving.”Neither demoness spoke for a moment. Then Davea reached for the notebook, but Marco pulled it away before she could take it.“Careful,” he said. “I'm beginning to think this is important.”“Give it to me.”“Could you ask politely?”Her eyes narrowed. “Marco.”“That's closer.”Devana placed a hand on her sister's arm before the argument could escalate. “Let him finish.”She turned to Marco.“In infernal magic, an anchor is a binding mechanism designed to attach a soul or entity to a specific vessel. Depending on the strength of the enchantment, it can prevent the bound presence from escaping even after the vessel dies.”Marco looked toward the altar. “So the circle wasn't bringing the original owner back to life?”“Not necessarily,” Devana replied. “It may have been keeping something inside his body.”Marco remembered the voice that had spoken through the stone.
